Faro's Daughter
Faro's Daughter | Georgette Heyer
12 posts | 18 read | 9 to read
Celebrate the 80th birthday of Regency Romance with great books from Sourcebooks Casablanca! Beautiful Deborah Grantham, mistress of her aunt's elegant gaming house, must find a way to restore herself and her aunt to respectability, preferably without accepting either of two repugnant offers. One is from an older, very rich and rather corpulent lord whose reputation for licentious behavior disgusts her; the other from the young, puppyish scion of a noble family whose relatives are convinced she is a fortune hunter. Max Ravenscar, uncle to her young suitor, comes to buy her off, an insult so scathing that it leads to a volley of passionate reprisals, escalating between them to a level of flair and fury that can only have one conclusion... "My favourite historical novelist--stylish, romantic, sharp, and witty. Her sense of period is superb, her heroines are enterprising, and her heroes dashing. I owe her many happy hours." -Margaret Drabble "Georgette Heyer is unbeatable." - Sunday Telegraph "Sparkling." -Independent on Sunday "A writer of great wit and style...I've read herbooks to ragged shreds." -Kate Fenton, Daily Telegraph

I feel that I have enjoyed this title. A gentleman is determined to save his young relative from the clutches of the golddigger who runs the gaming house.

There is battle between them, and I think it's supposed to be passionate and funny. But what Deborah does is horrible (kidnaps him). I did the gender reverse in my head to see if I was being fair. It feels horrible if a man did it too.

Ever wondered what Pride & Prejudice would be like if the protagonists were even more set against one another and determined not to yield an inch? (As I write this I realise that it's the premise of every modern regency romance ever written). I give you the benighted romance of Miss Grantham and Mr Ravenscarr, reluctant games house hostess and gentleman gamester. With added kindnappings, currucle-races, fistfights and fortune-hunters. Great fun.

jillrhudy Nuptials imminent. 6y
Moray_Reads @jillrhudy could they're be a clearer sign? 😅 6y
Wife @HOTPock3tt Does this remind you of anything? It certainly caught my attention!💔 6y

A Regency #romantsy by one of the best authors. Deb works for her aunt in a gaming establishment and has caught the attention of a much younger, richer more aristocratic Gentleman. His mother does not approve and sends her nephew to stop the romance. Hi jinks ensue. This is a very funny Heyer. Listening was interesting, it‘s amazing how many people “ejaculated “ without a single sex scene. I couldn‘t help laughing every time I heard the word. 😂

I especially love the Georgette Heyer books with slightly older heroines who know what they want and take care of (and manage!) their friends and loved ones. Deb is one such feisty heroine, and I greatly enjoyed my reread of this book!

robinb I need to read more of her books...I‘ve loved everything I‘ve read from her so far. 6y
CoffeeK8 💕 this one! 6y
ScientistSam @robinb she's definitely one of my favorites! What have you read? 6y

ScientistSam @CoffeeK8 what are some other favorites for you? This, The Grand Sophy, Frederica, and The Unknown Ajax are some of mine 6y
Eyelit Do Heyer‘s books need to be read in any sort of order or can you just pick and choose your way through her catalog? 6y
CoffeeK8 @ScientistSam Bath Tangle, The reluctant Widow and my all time favorite is cotillion 6y
CoffeeK8 @Eyelit you don‘t have to do it in a particular order but her first couple are not quite as good as her later ones 6y
Eyelit @CoffeeK8 good to know - thanks! 6y
ScientistSam @Eyelit I agree with @CoffeeK8 , the later ones have more mature heroines. There are a couple of books whose protoganists are related (the parents' story then one of their sons I think - it might be These Old Shades and Devil's Cub) but there are no spoilers and no need to read even those in any specific order. 6y
ScientistSam @CoffeeK8 💕 Cotillion 6y
ScientistSam @CoffeeK8 I also enjoyed The Reluctant Widow, but don't remember Bath Tangle. I may have to look it up! 6y
CoffeeK8 @ScientistSam I also really liked Devil‘s cub, but I feel like I shouldn‘t 6y
robinb @ScientistSam I bought several on a Kindle sale last year but haven‘t got to them yet. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I‘ve read The Grand Sophy, These Old Shades, Venetia, Friday‘s Child, Arabella, Frederica and The Toll-Gate. My favorites were The Grand Sophy, The Toll-Gate and Venetia. My least favorite was These Old Shades...didn‘t really care for that one. (edited) 6y

'"He thinks he's in love!" She said tragically.
Lord Ravenscar was unmoved.'

That's it. That's the summary of all Georgette Heyer books. (I kid, I love the predictability of her ouevre.) in other news I'm ill and need some regency romances to make me feel better.

thegirlwiththelibrarybag That‘s a great sentence tho 😂 hope you are feeling better soon! 6y
Moray_Reads Arabella is I've of my favourites and I'm reading Faro's daughter at the moment. Love Georgette 6y

Revisiting an old friend today. One of my favorite Heyers - the banter between Miss Deborah Grantham and the irascible Max Ravenscar makes me laugh so much!
