What a lovely, warm cuppa of a book. I loved every minute I spent with the MacAlveys and all of the people who populated their lives that summer. Adored Ferguson‘s comedic timing, too. Must try to hunt down more of her work! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I have been dipping in and out of this book (life got busy) and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Delightful! And like the #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub gang said, a true comfort read. I love the humour, the atmosphere - makes me want to follow the adventurous island hopping, the hikes. Lovely pick!

Ruthiella I think this was a perfect book to read slowly, as a well earned break from life‘s responsibilities. 😊 I also enjoy the picnicking adventure with the kids a lot. I remember that excitement as a kid of the whole summer stretching out before one. It‘s was a great feeling! (edited) 3y

What a marvellous summer holiday I've had in the West Highlands with the MacAlveys. Such lovely people (pity about the daughter-in-law). I've sailed to the islands with the children, inspected the renovations at Larrich, heard all about Mrs Leigh's tribulations, visited the local gentry, spent a heavenly day on Skye and attended a beautiful wedding - there was never a dull moment! And soon wedding bells will ring again!

A Highland family gathers at a country house over the summer of 1948, with numerous visitors and a wedding planned for the end of the holiday.

That right there was enough for me to want to read this but I still found myself surprised at just how much I loved it. Even the “villains” were likeable in their own way. 😆 A lovely story that falls solidly in the “most comforting of comfort reads” camp.

Another delightful and satisfying read with the #furrowedmiddlebrowclub gang. I so enjoyed my time with this sprawling Scottish family and their low-key summer escapades. Loved the setting and scenery, that the girls were occasionally prickly, and that the characters seemed just as annoyed and exasperated as I was by the likes of Trina and Elinore 😅. Also, just the right amount of swoon. 💙🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

This was a sweet, old-fashioned story. I never had any doubt about how it would pan out. I even guessed Gull‘s true identity. I wanted a bit more to sink my teeth into. Half the book is about the MacAlvey grandchildren and their sailing adventures and the other half is a romance between the grown MacAlvey daughters and the local lairds. Slappable side characters abound, like the snobbish English cousins or Mrs. Leigh and her “recent” operation.

This is set in the postwar 1940s Scottish Highlands, & is the bookish equivalent of a warm blanket & cup of hot cocoa. The MacAlvey family & their friends were a bunch of people I was happy to spend time with, & I also appreciate that this story was a low-key children's adventure tale in disguise. I also very much wanted to read a sweet but spiky story that ended on a hopeful note, & this delivered. Steeped in atmosphere & quite delightful 🌸

Many years ago I looked after my mother following a brain injury so I feel for the kind of difficulties you might be going through 💕 We‘re all ok thank you. Full lock down here but my dad is safely back in his retirement village (following surgery) and is allowed to interact with the other residents now so that‘s a big relief xxx 3y

A charming feel good read! Lovable quirky family & friends, and many astute observations about human nature and personality types. The Highlands & islands sound breathtaking by the descriptions.
