An absolute trailblazing legend. Tyson passed away not long after this biography was published, and how lucky are we she was able to get it written. A bit of juicy celebrity gossip, but mostly about how hard she worked and the challenges of growing up poor and Black in America.
A great book for Women history month.
pickWhat a woman, what a life! I really enjoyed reading her story. I highly recommend picking this one up.
pickCicely Tyson brought grace and humanity to the stories of Black women in the middle of the Civil Rights era. A child of West Indian immigrants, she worked hard to carve out independence and achieved unbelievable success. I loved this backstage view into her life full of friendships with leading ladies and men. Her method of activism was to use her presence to raise others up: Dance Theater of Harlem, a Performing Arts School, among many examples.
pickActually between a “so-so” and a “pick.” Well- written and informative but….underwhelming for me. I wanted to like it more.
pickI loved listening to this book, her voice is like a meditation. When she takes on her mother‘s accent to recount stories of them together it‘s lovely ❤️ listening to her talk about her life, racism and her marriage to Miles Davis is eye opening. I‘m going to miss her voice in my ear. I can‘t believe she was 96 when she did this and died shortly thereafter

Written when she was 96 years old, Ms. Tyson reflects on what is was like being a black women coming of age in 1920‘s Harlem. A powerhouse of grace, grit, poise, energy and influence, she shares and ruminates about her life‘s journey and all the incredible people whose path she‘s crossed.👇🏼
Just look at this gorgeous photo! Very excited my hold came in. Cicely Tyson lived through the most explosive decade. Born in Harlem 1924 and passed away this year. Almost 100 years of living! So glad that Ms. Tyson had the opportunity to share her story before her death. Her voice is commanding and sultry. It‘s clear this was a woman of wisdom and grace.
pickElegant, honest, captivating and beautiful, this autobiography is just like the woman herself. I love the depths in which Ms. Tyson plumbs her life story here and was riveted by every minute. While I own this in print, I listened on #audio during my walks and I loved the narrator. Ms.Tyson and Viola Davis (who wrote the forward), also narrated pieces as well. pickThis was amazing! I‘m so glad she was able to write and complete this before she died. What an awesome legacy she left. Her story, much like her acting, is outstanding. She lived her life boldly in full color once she found her voice. Her drive and determination are inspiring.
pickMs Tyson was such an absolute trailblazing legend. Grateful that she (maybe with a ghost writer) was able to complete this book before she passed. What a remarkable life, filled with determination and drive. The book is well written, with just enough juicy celebrity gossip to keep you entertained, while she also leads you through how hard it was (& is) to be a Black woman in America and in this industry.
I am finishing up this book today got curious & read some GR reviews, This one white woman's review struck me. She knocks 2 stars off the book for bc she doesn't like Tyson's faith (which doesn't hurt anyone) and 1 off BC Tyson doesn't react to all situations as the reviewer would.
I just find it interesting how others rate books so strongly based on if they "relate" or flush out exactly how the reviewer (who cannot conceive that life) would want
Yesterday was a holiday for the US so this means my whole week is going to be me saying "What day is it?". But hoping to get through these three books!

pickThis book was EVERYTHING! I loved it! Her story is amazing. As I was reading I could imagine her just sitting in a corner telling me the story of her life. It was glorious. pickI loved it, but I loved her. I liked the beginning more as it covered her childhood. There was a lot that I didn‘t know about her and therefore enjoyed learning more about her.
