Star Wars: Light of the Jedi (The High Republic)
Star Wars: Light of the Jedi (The High Republic) | Charles Soule
33 posts | 19 read | 1 reading | 4 to read
Long before the First Order, before the Empire, before even The Phantom Menace. . . Jedi lit the way for the galaxy in The High Republic It is a golden age. Intrepid hyperspace scouts expand the reach of the Repubic to the furthest stars, worlds flourish under the benevolent leadership of the Senate, and peace reigns, enforced by the wisdom and strength of the renowned order of Force users known as the Jedi. With the Jedi at the height of their power, the free citizens of the galaxy are confident in their ability to weather any storm But the even brightest light can cast a shadow, and some storms defy any preparation. When a shocking catastrophe in hyperspace tears a ship to pieces, the flurry of shrapnel emerging from the disaster threatens an entire system. No sooner does the call for help go out than the Jedi race to the scene. The scope of the emergence, however, is enough to push even Jedi to their limit. As the sky breaks open and destruction rains down upon the peaceful alliance they helped to build, the Jedi must trust in the Force to see them through a day in which a single mistake could cost billions of lives. Even as the Jedi battle valiantly against calamity, something truly deadly grows beyond the boundary of the Republic. The hyperspace disaster is far more sinister than the Jedi could ever suspect. A threat hides in the darkness, far from the light of the age, and harbors a secret that could strike fear into even a Jedis heart.

I feel bad saying this was only so-so, because I ended up liking it a lot. I had to get the audio to get through it though. The beginning is just SO sad that I lost the motivation to keep going. I've sort of accidentally collected a backlog of Star Wars books though and wanted to push through! (I read multiple books at once, but more than one Star Wars book at the same time might confuse me.)

Day 19. In this first installment of the High Republic, the outpost in deep space is being created to house Jedi, those who can aid the outlying planets during any disaster. It‘s the perfect timing, since there‘s a great disaster where a space ship in a hyper lane is broken in several pieces. The Jedi are on the task to save as many occupants as possible.

A great start for this series.. lots of characters (and few already gone! 😢) and great action scenes! Can't wait to read the next installments, and I have to figure out if there's a correct reading order 😅

This was my #bookspin for February, I couldn't hoped for a better choice! @TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! I'm a bit intimidated by the sheer bulk of Star Wars reading material, so I never seem to actually read it 😂 2y
La_Cori @TheAromaofBooks this is my first novel ever in the Star Wars universe.. for years I didn't know where to start reading and now I finally decided for the new "beginning" ? 2y

After reading the plodding finale of the new Thrawn trilogy, this tight, well paced novel was just what I needed. Yes, there are a ton of new characters, several of whom don't last long, but they always feel necessary. Great start to a fresh new era of Star Wars.

Twainy I‘m so sad that I missed the GSFF book box last January. 2y

I started some of the comics last year, but I'm ready to drive deep into the High Republic. So far, so good, as the first 100 pages detail a dangerous mission that features a dozen new Jedi and beautiful demonstrates the discipline and philosophy of the Order. An excellent start

Even though I wanted to like this book, it was more of a Meh to me. I'm not sure if it was required to be familiar with the High Republic series beforehand, but for me there were just too many characters, showing up way too fast. Most of the time I had no clue who was who... Therefore, I couldn't enjoy the story either... There were some ideas and parts I slightly could enjoy, but all in all this wasn't for me...

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! 2y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I still haven‘t gotten mine from the library…long wait list. But I thought this was the first high republic book, maybe I missed one somewhere? 2y
Jari-chan @Riveted_Reader_Melissa It might as well be the first, and they thought it might be a good idea to throw in all characters at once 🤷‍♀️ 2y

I've been waiting to get to this one for #StarWarsBuddyRead and I really enjoyed it. I love some of the new Jedi like Avar Kriss, Elzar Mann, Bell and Loden Greatstorm 💙
A ship is destroyed in hyperspace and headed straight towards the Hetzal System. The Jedi are called to help stop the complete destruction.

This book is crazy. A ship tried to avoid a mystery object in hyper space but the ship got destroyed in the process, and now chunks of that ship are zooming at hyper speed toward the Hetzal system, AND there are people still inside of these chunk so of the ship and the Jedi have to try to get everyone off of the systems planets and get the people out of the speedingship. I don‘t know how they will do it, but I am exited to see how.

I stand by my dislike of the narrator. But I liked the story. I should probably just read these books rather than listen to them. They play out like the old radio programs in the pre-television 📺 era, with the music and sound effects, which I enjoyed. I suppose Lucas Books has a contract with the voice talent so either I endure it or move on to reading the books. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ out of 5.

I don‘t mind the sound FX. I don‘t mind the music. But even listening at a faster speed, I realize that it‘s definitely the voice talent that annoys me most about Disney‘s SW audiobooks. I‘m about a third through the book, let‘s see if I bail.

I‘m enjoying how the high republic books all have their different story that ties together. I actually had a spoiler for this one, since I‘d already read Into the dark by Claudia Gray - but I can‘t work out which you should read first, as either is a spoiler for the other 🤷🏼‍♀️ anyway looottsss of characters to keep track of - I definitely think the audiobook is the way to go to aid with this. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I ❤️ Star Wars. But I‘ve yet to find a SW book that I‘ve enjoyed. I also don‘t love the voice talent that Disney uses for their SW audiobooks. So we‘ll see. I‘ll try to give it a chance.

RamsFan1963 I don't listen to much fiction on audio, but I thought this was great, the voice actors, the sound effects and the music all blended together nicely 3y

What an incredible introduction to the newest era of Star Wars: The High Republic. This novel does amazing things to establish the galaxy and the roles of those within it from the Jedi, politicians, the evil Nihil, and ordinary citizens.

In addition, this novel introduces so many wonderful Jedi, but the new Master and Padawan pair Loden Greatstorm and Bell Zettifar are some of my favorites. Can‘t wait to continue my journey through this era!

I rarely do audio fiction, but really enjoyed this. Yes there are a lot of characters to keep track of, but once I got into the story it was easy to keep them all straight. The Nihil were a bit cliche, however they were effective as villains.

I borrowed this intro to the new era of Star Wars from the library, but yawned big whenever I considered starting it. Just not feeling it right now. We are also buying a house and moving, and I'm looking for a new job, so I'm not in the mood for a new series/new world. I think I'll work on some non-fiction and lighter reads for a bit.

Bookwomble That sounds like a lot of things to be juggling 🤹‍♂️ I hope everything goes as smoothly for you as it reasonably can 💗 3y

I‘d be down for reading a Jedi romance with lots of lightsaber action! ❤️

vivastory How are you liking this one? I haven't read any of the SW. novelizations but I love Soule's graphic novel Curse Words 3y
CrowCAH @vivastory there‘s a lot of new characters, in short chapters, so it‘s taking some getting into the actual story. Overall, the writing is well done. I have no comparison to any of his other works. 3y
vivastory Gotcha. Thanks! 3y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa 😂 so funny since they can‘t have love lives....but I love that they became a fantasy-inducing thing. 3y
CrowCAH @Riveted_Reader_Melissa you know, I never thought about in that way. You have a good point. Now I like this reference a whole lot more. ❤️ 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @CrowCAH That was Anakin‘s downfall, wasn‘t it, they were supposed to be more like religious monks, no connections, so no strong emotional entanglements to lead them to the dark side. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Maybe that‘s why all the longing glances and lightsaber fights... 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Lots of unrequited love stories, the longing for the forbidden, and lots of displaced emotions in lightsaber battles. (edited) 3y
CrowCAH @Riveted_Reader_Melissa yes, strong emotion is the biggest no-no for the Jedi. Which is why fear and hate lead Anakin to the dark side. 3y

Understood that the author was given the content to flesh out by the Disney/Lucasfilm Jedi Council, but still...ugh. Sure, the story is intended to be a setup for a whole new Star Wars narrative, with a lot of ground to cover. But so many new characters - just too many to track. And calling the new bad guys the Nihil? Now that‘s creative. Dumb book only for schmuck Star Wars obsessives like me.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I know what you mean, I struggle with the Star Wars cannon...some are great and some are filler and blah. 3y
QuintusMarcus @Riveted_Reader_Melissa , very true. Timothy Zahn‘s Thrawn books are all very good, though. 3y

Sigh. I wanted to love this book and..I did at first. I can‘t just not recommend it as it is the first adult novel in the High Republic canon era but it fizzed out. I really liked the first 2/3 of the book. But honestly the last 1/3 draaaaged. I wasn‘t satisfied with the end, was bored by the villains and I honestly felt it could‘ve been wrapped up in 100 less pages. While I won‘t say skip it, I‘d say don‘t put it on a pedestal.
