Lost Orphan (Original)

A Sunday Times bestseller! Two women, bound by a child, and a secret that will change everything . . . London, 1754. Six years after leaving her illegitimate newborn at the Foundling Hospital, Bess Bright returns to reclaim the daughter she has never known. Dreading the worst, that she has died in care, she is astonished to discover someone pretending to be Bess has already claimed her. Her life is turned upside down as she tries to find out who has taken her little girl--and why. Less than a mile from Bess's poor lodgings, in a quiet Georgian townhouse, lives Alexandra, a reclusive young widow. When her close friend--an ambitious doctor at the orphanage--persuades her to hire a nursemaid to help care for her daughter, she is hesitant to welcome someone new into her home. But her past is threatening to catch up with her and tear her carefully constructed world apart. From the Sunday Times bestselling author of The Familiars comes this captivating story of mothers and daughters, class and power, and love against the greatest of odds. "A gripping tale of motherhood, loss, and redemption. Hall's distinctive characters and scrupulous historical detail drop us into a rich, Dickensian world full of desperation and lies, and shows us just how far a mother will go to hold onto her child." --Serena Burdick, International bestselling author of The Girls with No Names "The new Hilary Mantel!"--Cosmopolitan

HISTORICAL FICTION - MYSTERY

Having to leave your newborn at a Foundling until you could afford to keep the child seemed to be the norm in the 1700's for poor families.

THE LOST ORPHAN has mystery, historical fiction, a main character with agoraphobic problems that stem from an incident in her childhood, secrets, and to what lengths a mother's love takes her

This is my book club‘s pick for this month, & I thoroughly enjoyed this compelling #audiobook! I definitely found myself listening at every opportunity and really enjoyed both performances. Told in two perspectives- Bess & Alexandra‘s lives are brought together by the titular character. While credulity may be strained at times, this is an engaging read & I‘m looking forward to hearing what the rest of the group thought of it! Well-researched too!

A little far-fetched, but I gave into the fiction, stopped my criticism, and enjoyed the story and the excellent performance by the readers. 3/5⭐️s

This was a great audiobook. There are 2 narrators with 2 different POV‘s. Set in the 1750s in London, it tells the story of 2 women from very different backgrounds and what lengths they will go to for the child they both love. I need to read more books from this time period! 4⭐️

Another great historical fiction from Stacey Hall. Bess leaves her illegitimate daughter Clara at the Foundling's Hospital. Six years later she goes to get her back. She finds out that her daughter has been reclaimed already. Bess goes about trying too find out who took her, why and plan to find her. It was such a great book, well written and explores families, motherhood and class. Set in Georgian London.

In May, two books I hope to read will be these. Both are for the letter challenge and hopefully from this you can see it is the letter H.

1. The Foundling by Stacey Halls
2. The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood.

I can hardly believe that I haven't read or seen the TV shows of Handmaid's Tale. #tbr

Very much enjoying this book, but a little salty that the UK gets the beautiful cover and perfect title on the left. Why did the US publisher have to mess with it?! (Disclaimer—I know nothing about the publishing industry or why changes like this are made 😂)

LeahBergen I hate when US publishers “dumb down” the titles like this. They did it with Harry Potter and The Philosopher‘s Stone, too. 😠 3y
Moray_Reads @LeahBergen the US cover of The Familiars was gorgeous, no idea why they went with this for her second book 🤨 3y
MsMelissa That explains why I can‘t find it here - I was looking under the UK title. Guess I‘ll have to order from Book Depository since the UK cover is so much nicer (and is more in line with the cover for The Familiars). 3y

Reviewsbylola That was my suspicion @LeahBergen , that Americans are too stupid to know what foundling means. 😂 3y
Reviewsbylola If I had bought, I would have def gone the BD route! @Book_Fiend_Melissa 3y
Reviewsbylola I‘ve not read The Familiars but I agree, the cover is gorgeous and the US publisher didn‘t change that one! 3y
megnews @Reviewsbylola @LeahBergen I had the exact thought about dumbing it down for us before I read your comments! 😂 3y
Laughterhp Oh, is that why I couldn‘t find that book at my bookstore... I didn‘t realize the name changed in the US. 3y
ValerieAndBooks Wow what a big difference in cover styles. Too bad they couldn‘t at least keep the same UK cover design even if they “had” to change the title! (edited) 3y
emilyhaldi Perhaps the same line of reasoning that caused “aubergine” to become “eggplant” 🍆😂 3y
Reviewsbylola Or Below Deck to change boatswain to bosun. 😂😂 @emilyhaldi 3y
LeahBergen @Moray_Reads Right? 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3y
LeahBergen @megnews It‘s so irritatingly stupid! I‘m Canadian so I grew up reading probably half US and half UK literature. Children (and adults) can do a teensy amount of minimal research and figure out country-specific language usage and I think it‘s an important life skill, on the whole. 🙄 Right?? 3y
megnews @LeahBergen Right. First, if you read, you probably know the term. And there‘s this little thing called a dictionary which you can even use on your phone. Perhaps they think were lazy in addition to dumb! 😂 I had never even considered this country-specific. We don‘t use it anymore but historically we did. 3y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I enjoyed this one immensely and read it in two days. Bess a street hawker in Georgian London, is forced by circumstance to leave her baby at the Foundling Hospital, when she returns, six years later to claim her, she discovers that baby 627 has already been collected, by her mother, the day after she was left. Will Bess be able to recover the child she has lost?

Catherine_Willoughby Georgian period? Might like this 😁 The last one was early Stuart period . I do so love these covers 4y
veritysalter @Catherine Definitely Georgian London. I much preferred this one to ‘The Familiars‘. 4y

The Foundling is captivating and beautiful historical novel. From chapter one I was desperate to know how it was going to turn out. The
characters are three dimensional, the personal stakes are so high for everyone I had to read fast before I got too stressed.
I flew through it, and couldn't wait to finish. Halls has a gift for storytelling, and it's a privilege to enjoy her writing. Would recommend to fans of Laura Purcell or Mary Shelley.

Going back to get your child to find someone else has taken her was worse than leaving her.

This was such a brilliant story, I throughly enjoyed it.
When pregnant Bess gives up her baby to the Foundling hospital she has every intention of claiming her precious child back.
But when she finally earns enough money to go and collect her she is distraught to find out that someone has been there before her and the person who took her was actually Bess!
Bess cannot get over this. And dedicates herself to solving this mystery of what happened.

The pitch-perfect prose brings Georgian London to vivid life, and strongly engages us with the central protagonist Bess Bright. She has had to give up her newborn baby Clara and the story follows her quest years later to find her daughter again. It makes lots of points about social divisions in the eighteenth (and twenty-first?) centuries and what it means to be a mother, all wrapped up in a page-turning narrative.

Well, what can I say? This is beautifully written historical fiction at its finest. It tells of the differences in social status, the huge gap between the wealthy and the poor and the challenges they face on a daily basis. It also tells of motherhood and just how far a mother will go for her child.

Both heartbreaking and heartwarming.

veritysalter I‘m so desperate to read this, but I‘m waiting on a personalised copy when Stacey Halls come to Waterstones in Harrogate. I‘m so pleased it‘s getting such fab reviews. 4y
