America's Women
America's Women | Gail Collins
America's Women tells the story of more than four centuries of history. It features a stunning array of personalities, from the women peering worriedly over the side of the Mayflower to feminists having a grand old time protesting beauty pageants and bridal fairs. Courageous, silly, funny, and heartbreaking, these women shaped the nation and our vision of what it means to be female in America. By culling the most fascinating characters -- the average as well as the celebrated -- Gail Collins, the editorial page editor at the New York Times, charts a journey that shows how women lived, what they cared about, and how they felt about marriage, sex, and work. She begins with the lost colony of Roanoke and the early southern "tobacco brides" who came looking for a husband and sometimes -- thanks to the stupendously high mortality rate -- wound up marrying their way through three or four. Spanning wars, the pioneering days, the fight for suffrage, the Depression, the era of Rosie the Riveter, the civil rights movement, and the feminist rebellion of the 1970s, America's Women describes the way women's lives were altered by dress fashions, medical advances, rules of hygiene, social theories about sex and courtship, and the ever-changing attitudes toward education, work, and politics. While keeping her eye on the big picture, Collins still notes that corsets and uncomfortable shoes mattered a lot, too. "The history of American women is about the fight for freedom," Collins writes in her introduction, "but it's less a war against oppressive men than a struggle to straighten out the perpetually mixed message about women's roles that was accepted by almost everybody of both genders." Told chronologically through the compelling stories of individual lives that, linked together, provide a complete picture of the American woman's experience, America's Women is both a great read and a landmark work of history.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, and some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join in if you want!

Minor quibble perhaps, but in a book about women's lives and achievements, it seems a little weird not to mention that Gone with the Wind also won a Pulitzer. #WomensHistoryMonth

An interesting overview of women‘s role in America and American history over the past 400 years. Not surprisingly, lots of roadblocks and frustrations along the way for women. Given that it covers a long timeline, individuals and issues are not all covered in depth but it‘s still a good brush-up on history and also thought provoking.

This prompt is tricky and makes me feel so very, very old! Thanks to other‘s interpretations of the lyrics, I cobbled together this. I sense a feeling of power in the lyrics, so this book examines women who have led, quietly or not so quietly, in American history. It‘s a general history, examining time eras and highlighting the impact women had in each era. #bodakyellow #aprella

Fascinating, infuriating, inspiring, educational, and frustrating. Such important stories. So many stories left out (women of color, LGBTQIA+, etc) - it‘s clear whose history is important. Mostly, I‘m left with an overwhelming sense that women make this world go around and we are strong as hell.

This was a gift from my American best friend (we read it together in our "long distance book club" ????). It's chock-full of the most interesting, readable historical bios of those who personify the idea of #ShePersisted. #MarchIntoReading

drbethandherkindle I've got this one on my TBR! Keep me posted on how it is!! 7y
LeahBergen @drbethandherkindle It's really good! (I always seem to forget to click on "review" instead of "blurb" to post as I "blurb" so much more. Gah!) 7y

I read 'When Everything Changed' years ago and immediately bought this with every intention of reading it. But it's languished on my shelf for no good reason. With one week to go before the Women's March on Washington, now seems like as good a time as any to get to this.

This is my favorite book about heroines. Sometimes it is in what others deem as an "average life" where heroines actually reside. I'm convinced that a heroine resides in every single woman. #seasonsreadings2016

GeekGrl82 I read this one years ago. Very good! I was reading her book When Everything Changed over the election, but I had to stop. It hurt too much. 7y

This is a book that should be read by everyone. It is so eye-opening and the facts are astounding. To really be confronted with where our sex has come from and the struggles we have endured puts in perspective our place in society now. It makes you realize what we have left to accomplish, and it makes you infinitely proud to be of the enduring, wise, and stubborn female population.

My first #wcw and #recommendsday is Gail Collins and her two books on the history of women in America. Historical, anecdotal, easily digestible, and just plain fascinating to read.

BookishFeminist Gail Collins is great! I need to read this one. 8y
