A chilling exploration into obsession, reconciliation and revenge in 2020's must-read novel. Rose Gold Watts believed she was sick for eighteen years. She thought she needed the feeding tube, the surgeries, the wheelchair . . . Turns out her mum, Patty, is a really good liar. After five years in prison Patty Watts is finally free. All she wants is to put old grievances behind her, reconcile with her daughter - and care for her new infant grandson. When Rose Gold agrees to have Patty move in, it seems their relationship is truly on the mend. But Rose Gold knows her mother. Patty won't rest until she has her daughter back under her thumb. Which is inconvenient because Rose Gold wants to be free of Patty. Forever. Only one Watts will get what she wants. Will it be Patty or Rose Gold? Mother, or daughter? 'One of the most captivating and disturbing thrillers I've read this year. An astonishing debut' Samantha Downing, author of My Lovely Wife 'This book has it all - a killer premise, twisty plotting, crisp writing and compelling characters. Dazzling, dark and utterly delicious' J P Delaney, bestselling author of The Girl Before

Book 18 2021 - I think ultimately this is a pick although it was almost a thumb sideways purely for the fact that I don‘t enjoy books as much when I find every single character unlikable. But in this story of abuse begetting abuse it was necessary. Another one ticked off #booked2021

Cinfhen This was surprisingly entertaining & memorable! Nice choice for #ColorPrompt 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Sounds like a tough read! 3y

Next up for #booked2021 #bookwithacolourinthetitle I hope Rose Gold counts? It‘s a colour I love (especially in jewelry 😁)

Cinfhen Ohhhh, is this the sequel to 3y
Cinfhen And yes, Rose Gold is definitely a color ❣️❣️❣️ 3y
Cinfhen Ahhh, I think the US and UK have different titles for the same book 3y
Magpiegem @Cinfhen I keep reading books with different names in other countries at the moment! I don‘t really understand why a lot of the time. The alternative name always seems just as acceptable as the name on the UK version. Very odd! 3y

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.

I‘ve been working all day today 😒 and usually can‘t do audio at the same time, but today I was just ticking off numbers (exciting!) so I got to listen to this.

It‘s a really unusual thriller, telling the story of Rose Gold, whose mother was jailed for abusing her by faking her illnesses. Patty is now free to leave prison and why is Rose Gold so keen to get back to normal?

I didn‘t actually guess the ending, although perhaps it was a bit rushed.

JamieArc At first I thought maybe this was a sequel, but I‘m guessing it‘s the UK title as opposed to the American Darling Rose Gold title. I always find change in titles so interesting! 3y
squirrelbrain Yes, it‘s strange why / how they change titles isn‘t it? @JamieArc 3y
Deblovestoread @JamieArc My brother loaned me a book by one of his favorite authors called That They May Face the Rising Sun that he found on a trip to Ireland. I was so excited to find another book by that author for him called By the Lake. Yep, same book, titles not even close. 😂 3y

squirrelbrain Oh how annoying @Kdgordon88 - but it still made me laugh 😂 (sorry!) 3y

This book has all the hallmarks of a pacy thriller, but I tell you what, it‘s refreshing to read one that doesn‘t revolve around dead bodies and bloodshed. It isn‘t a “whodunnit”, but a sinister cat-and-mouse game of power and control. MSBP is a relatively rare psychological condition, and as a premise for a thriller it‘s fresh and fascinating. Hooked_on_books I loved this one! Deliciously devious. 4y

Rose Golds mother Patty was sent to prison for poisoning her as a child. The book opens with Patty's release from prison, Rose Gold picks her up...
Patty's thought about this;
'Riddle me this: if I spent almost two decades abusing my daughter, why did she offer to pick me up today?'

Why indeed?...

I liked this book but unfortunately, for me, the ending felt rushed and a bit predictable.

Wow, this was a dark, compelling read!!
A mother, convicted of poisoning her own daughter, is released from prison. The daughter invites her to move in but has she really forgiven her...?!
This kept me hooked & guessing the whole time. Full of suspense, twists & turns, complex characters, a cracking plot. I really enjoyed this psychological thriller. #scarathlon #ScaryScavengerHunt (that‘s over 200 pages) #teamstoker
