Girl Up | Laura Bates
They told you you need to be thin and beautiful. They told you to wear longer skirts, avoid going out late at night and move in groups - never accept drinks from a stranger, and wear shoes you can run in more easily than heels. They told you to wear just enough make-up to look presentable but not enough to be a slut; to dress to flatter your apple, pear, hourglass figure, but not to be too tarty. They warned you that if you try to be strong, or take control, you'll be shrill, bossy, a ballbreaker. Of course it's fine for the boys, but you should know your place. They told you 'that's not for girls' - 'take it as a compliment' - 'don't rock the boat' - 'that'll go straight to your hips'. They told you 'beauty is on the inside', but you knew they didn't really mean it. Well I'm here to tell you something different. Hilarious, jaunty and bold, GIRL UP exposes the truth about the pressures surrounding body image, the false representations in media, the complexities of a sex and relationships, the trials of social media and all the other lies they told us.

Aimed more towards the teenage crowd, but adult ladies do not let that keep you from picking this up. There‘s plenty of good advice we could all use. And fellas, it wouldn‘t hurt you to read too, to give you a good idea of what sexism is and how to combat it. 👍❤️

Just seen Laura Bates talking about #everydaysexism at Hay Festival. What an inspiring woman! Have any of you guys read any of her books?

TrishB Yes, seen her talk at work too (I work at a uni) she‘s very inspiring 👍🏻 6y

While I quickly realized this book is targeted toward teen and 20s young women, I found it absolutely delightful. It‘s a great reminder of all the crap women have to deal with, why it‘s crap, and some realistic recommendations for dealing with said crap. The above is part of the conclusion chapter and gives a good idea of the content and humor throughout. Plus, dancing labia endpapers!

Bklover THe endpapers sound fascinating!😀 6y
Hooked_on_books @Bklover They‘re hilarious! 6y

Reasons why I love this book:
Drawings of dancing vulvas
The sexist bullshit horn
Real talk
All the swearing
Attempts to be gender inclusive
The positivity & acceptance
This drawing of the clitoris with a vulva overlay so I finally can picture all of it together!

PerksOfBeingABookworm Sounds like my kind of book! 6y

I absolutely loved this book. It‘s such an awesome guide, primarily for teenage girls, but even as a supposed-grownup, I got a lot from it and was very inspired. Teenage boys could learn some valuable things from it too. Everyone could!

An empowering, modern guide for girls that is honest, funny, and practical. Bates gives advice on topics from sexual harassment to societal stereotypes surrounding women. Some people may be uncomfortable with the explicit details about sexuality and anatomy that she includes but she is doing teens a service by not leaving anything out.

TrishB Went to see her talk a couple of weeks ago with my daughter. She was impressive 👍 6y

Couldn't decide between pick and so-so, went with pick as think I'm probably just a bit old for the book!
Some interesting facts and reminders about everyday sexism. Depressing that it doesn't seem to have changed much, in fact social media seems to make it worse.
My 15 y/o daughter going to read now - think she's much more the target audience.

MyNamesParadise Even my girlfriends tell me to smile more if I'm to ever meet a guy and I'm like ugh- this is just my face! My natural face is resting bitch face!! 7y
TrishB @MyNamesParadise I sent a picture of this page to my daughter as she is always being told that too! She would agree with you. 7y

As I'm still nursing my book hangover for 20 year fantasy series, I've gone to a non-fiction feminist book 😀 Only started over lunch, I'm thinking I'm maybe a bit older than target audience but my 15 y/o daughter will love it.

BoldCityBooks @TrishB What 20 year old fantasy series did you just read? 7y
TrishB @Nebula_of_Books It was the last book in Robin Hobb's various series about Fitz and the Fool. If you like fantasy I can well recommend. 7y

So this is basically just an excellent and empowering guide to life for young women everywhere. Yes is has some swears, yes Bates talks about vaginas a lot, yes she tackles some really challenging and confronting topics. But also yes, she does all this in a respectful and hilarious way. This is exactly what we all need and I want to give it to every young woman I know. "When the going gets tough, the tough Girl Up."

Sue So true. I look at the differences in the way our media treated our female PM, who was smart and articulate vs her successor who was neither. (edited) 7y
ClairesReads @Sue I know right? This is a great and immensely quotable book- unapologetically litsy spamming it 💯 7y
ClairesReads @Sue I was just about to draw attention to Australia- but looked at your profile and I see you are there. Our longstanding female PM in NZ was also excellent and intelligent but throughout her leadership the media just focused on how 'unfeminine' she apparently is...because that's relevant aye? 7y

Sue I know, it's revolting. One right wing idiot called Gillard 'barren' in parliament, because women are only here to have babies. 7y
ClairesReads @Sue horrendous that women still face this. 7y

While it may be aimed at teenage girls, rather than the 37 year olds among us, this was a fun read - it's all about getting teenage girls to realise they are important and worthy, so I'll definitely be getting my little girls to listen to those concepts as they grow up to be incredible confident women!

Laalaleighh This is so hard to remember. 8y
Laalaleighh I spent all last year losing like 30 pounds and then my doctor put me on an SSRI for anxiety and I gained it all back in a month. I went off the SSRI to lose the weight back at the end of this summer (the withdrawals were terrible) and I'm just starting to make progress. No one I know could even see a difference in me + or me - 30 pounds, but it's all I see when I look in the mirror. Maybe I should just read more books like this. 8y

BibliOphelia The way you feel *should not* be linked to the shape of your body. Unfortunately, most of us are still fighting the programming 🙁 8y
ScorpioBookDreams @Laalaleighh I know exactly how you feel. My weight goes up and down with my medication too and it's sometimes all I can think about even though I objectively know there's more important things to be worrying about! 8y
tricours @Laalaleighh does the SSRI make you eat more, or does it somehow make you gain weight in another way? I take SSRI two weeks on/two weeks off, but so far I haven't noticed any weight change. 8y
Laalaleighh @tricours I've never heard of two weeks on/two weeks off for SRI, that's interesting. I honestly have no idea why I gained weight on it. I seriously barely eat. I love food but I get full after 10 bites or so. So it wasn't me eating more. Unless I just didn't realize it. 8y
tricours @Laalaleighh it's a pretty new indication for PMDD, had to tell my doctor about it! Gaining weight without eating seems so scary. I eat lots and have no problem eating even if I'm full, so I would have expected an increased appetite at least, but nopes! 8y
Laalaleighh @tricours what sucks is how hungry I constantly am. I get full fast but mentally im like... I ATE NOTHING. 8y
ElizabethAndino That sounds incredible 8y
