The Clasp
The Clasp: A Novel | Sloane Crosley
Part comedy of manners, part treasure hunt, the first novel from the writer whom David Sedaris calls "perfectly, relentlessly funny"Kezia, Nathaniel, and Victor are reunited for the extravagant wedding of a college friend. Now at the tail end of their twenties, they arrive completely absorbed in their own livesKezia the second-in-command to a madwoman jewelry designer in Manhattan; Nathaniel the former literary cool kid, selling his wares in Hollywood; and the Eeyore-esque Victor, just fired from a middling search engine. They soon slip back into old roles: Victor loves Kezia. Kezia loves Nathaniel. Nathaniel loves Nathaniel. In the midst of all this semi-merriment, Victor passes out in the mother of the groom's bedroom. He wakes to her jovially slapping him across the face. Instead of a scolding, she offers Victor a story she's never even told her son, about a valuable necklace that disappeared during the Nazi occupation of France. And so a madcap adventure is set into motion, one that leads Victor, Kezia, and Nathaniel from Miami to New York and L.A. to Paris and across France, until they converge at the estate of Guy de Maupassant, author of the classic short story "The Necklace." Heartfelt, suspenseful, and told with Sloane Crosley's inimitable spark and wit, The Clasp is a story of friends struggling to fit together now that their lives haven't gone as planned, of how to separate the real from the fake. Such a task might be possible when it comes to precious stones, but is far more difficult to pull off with humans.

Bailedbailed

I've made it to half way but I'm not going any further. I'm not finding it funny and I don't care where it's going. Bail.

Good characters and great writing but something about how the whole story resolved just left me feeling a bit meh.

Bailedbailed

I made it halfway through the book, began to suspect that this was going to be some kind of retelling of the short story The Necklace, and gave up. Still don't care for the characters at all. Self-absorbed, unethical, and this is what passes for witty now? Reminded me way more of The Nest than of The Madwoman Upstairs (so if you liked The Nest, you'll probably like this one). I guess there's a slight literary element to it, but not fun at all.

The Clasp: A Novel | Sloane Crosley

I'm a third of the way through this book, the adventure has yet to begin, and the characters are highly unlikable. I'm beginning to feel like anything popular and new and even mildly critically acclaimed is going to have self-absorbed, unlikable characters and good gosh, can people not just be nice and mildly quirky and intelligent anymore?

LiteraryinLawrence Ugh. It's really hard for me to get through books like that. 7y
Meglet @LiteraryinLititz do you have a hard time deciding when to bail too? I hate wasting my precious reading time on disappointing books, but I still have such a hard time bailing. 7y
LiteraryinLawrence @Meglet You know, in recent years I'm much more willing to bail on books. Sometimes even if I appreciate that it's a well done book, it's still not my cup of tea. And if it's not well done, it's even easier to bail on! 7y

?New Podcast Episode Day?⠀
Since it's our birthday month, so this month's theme is co-hosts choice, which means we picked whatever we wanted. We are featuring six books that we've been dying to read, including THE CLASP. It's loosely based off the short story "The Necklace." Books about books is the prompt for today's #ReadingWomenMonth challenge. ⠀

Went a little overboard at the Twin Cities Book Festival today given my pact that I'd only get 2 books. Couldn't help myself. Look at these beauties! And the only one that isn't used is the Milkweed book on publishing that I thought would be fitting to own (: 📚🎉 I'm most excited to start The Clasp!

Theresa One of how many? I went yesterday thinking I would just see authors. No need to buy anything; no need to get autographs. BWAHAHAHA!!! How stupid I was! I'm afraid to check my credit card statement. 😂😂 But here I am, primed & ready to do it all over again today! 📚📚📚 @Well-ReadNeck 8y

I was excited to read Sloane Crosley's novel debut since I have really loved all her essay collections. I grabbed it up right away, but I didn't see too much media about it. If you've read Guy deMaupassant's The Necklace, this book is for you! #augustphotochallenge #underhypedbook

This book is entirely entertaining from start to finish. Hilarious, twisted, and adventurous fun. A great beach read for the summer.

paige84 I read "I Was Told There'd Be Cake" and LOVED it. It was so unexpectedly funny I would have to put the book down for a few minutes to calm my laughing. I'll definitely have to check this one out. I didn't know she had more! 8y

Smart and cynical, but also really sweet. The plot took a while to get going, but the characters propelled it forward well enough in the first half. This was a fun read, and I'm always a sucker for modern literature inspired by the classics.

Put a review in the wrong space, forgive me. I had a hard time connecting to the three main characters. Took half the book to get the literary plot going, and then the whole thing ended abruptly. Disappointing but not awful.
