Stuff I've Been Feeling Lately
Stuff I've Been Feeling Lately | Alicia Cook
In Alicia Cook's second poetic effort, designed in the style of an old mixtape, she sets her thoughts to a nostalgic tune. There is no Table of Contents. Instead, there is a "Track List," making it easy to refer to them to your friends with a, "Hey did you read track seven?!"There are no chapters. Instead, the book is divided into two parts, or as one would say in the 90's, two "sides."Side A holds poetry that touches on all aspects of the human condition like life, death, love, moving on, evolving, growing up, hometowns, family dynamic, life after trauma, and make-ups and breakups.Side B holds the "remixes" of these poems, in the form of blackout poetry, also known as "found poetry." Side B gives the material a fresh twist by creating new poetry out of Side A.There is also a very special surprise at the end of each track.Alicia decided to self publish this effort after leaving her publishing house. She views this book as her "independence" and official separation from that venture. She also drew the front and back cover herself.Alicia is a contributing writer for many blogs and news outlets, including the Huffington Post and multiple Gannett Publications. She writes regularly on drug addiction and how it directly affects families. Because of this, she has chosen to donate 100% of royalties to the Willow Tree Center in New Jersey. www.willowtree.org.Follow Alicia on Instagram: @thealiciacook or check out her website: www.thealiciacook.com.

As of last year I'm really trying to read more poetry.
I've been exploring different types and trying to find what I like and don't.

This collection of poems was quite unique, as each poem is connected with a song Cook listened to that inspire her in one way or another to write said peom.
So I would read the poem, then listen to the song then read the song lyrics and then re-read the poem.
It was a powerful experience!

Update on day 1&2 of #EasterExtravaganza
I've managed 4h5m in these two days, but I constantly catch myself drifting. Not sure if it's my choice of reading material or the situation that's distracting me.

Andrew65 Could always be a bit of both. I‘ve gone back to some of my favourite authors, and seems to be helping. 4y
Enchanted_Bibliophile @Andrew65 Thanks, maybe I should also give it a try. 4y

**”You are holding yourself together just fine you will be okay someday”

Alicia Cook explores love and heartache in a unique format. A B side remix brings a message of hope and healing to shine through each of the poems in this collection.

Librariana @Kalalalatja - Aww! Thanks so much! 😊 It was a good, cozy day 😄💖 6y
Librariana @Cinfhen - Aww! Ms. Cindy! Thank you so very much! That is the kindest and most humbling compliment 😊💜 I try to put positive energy out into the Universe and always hope my smile is a good first step. 6y
Librariana @Clwojick - Lol! I got ya! ? It was totally not taken in a "creepy" way. It made me laugh! And thank you as well, @LauraBeth! I think as I've gotten older, I've grown more appreciative of it and am trying to take good care of it. I've also become quite fond of my little silver ones which make me feel like there's glitter strands coming out of my head ?? 6y
Jess7 Love the curly hair! 6y
Librariana @Jess7 - 💕 Thank you so much 😊💖 I think when I was much younger, I didn't know how to style it correctly and perhaps wished I had straight hair like most other girls... But isn't it funny how that's the case? Wishing we had the opposite? As I've gotten older, I've grown to be more appreciative and grateful for it, including its silver strands! 😄 6y
mcipher Glitter strands! I love that idea. ❤️❤️ And your hair is totally fantastic. #notcreepy 😜 6y

#quotsyjan18 #spirit this book of poetry is in the format of a mix tape and each poem is paired with a song. The a side are poems and the b side blacked out versions of the same set. I prefer part b overall I think.

I stumbled across this collection of poems walking towards the kids section at Barnes & Nobles.
I‘m pretty sure I‘m going to love the poems but it‘s part two — side B — that sold this for me.

I enjoyed this poetry collection but it‘s not like a favorite ever. I enjoyed the side B more and I don‘t think that was the point. There were a few that touched me, those on grief as I‘m dealing with my own grieving right now. I enjoyed the style more than anything, and the songs at the end. If you have any more poetry recs I would love them!

I sadly have few examples of #poetry but I'm ready to move towards amending this!

I'm pretty sure Milk & Honey will blow me away (I follow her on instagram and flipped through a few pages of the book) so I'm waiting for the proper time and head space to properly appreciate it.

Same for Ginsberg; and Lorca I want to read in tandem with my BFF.

Stuff I've Been Feeling Lately was a sweet romp.
I even dog-eared pages to return to! 😯

Recommended for those that like the modern style similar to Salt, Milk and Honey etc - which I do.
Some heart breaking poems about grief - based on the poets own life events, they were 💔.
Each poem linked to a song.

Paula3 I find myself picking this up often. ♡♡ 7y
TrishB @Paula3 I think I will be too. I also like the 'home' themed ones - just so well written. 7y

My purchases from Shakespeare and Co - could have been many more! Hubby brought the ones in the paper bag for me - but I can't have until my actual birthday to remind me of the trip that was my present!!
I collect different versions of Ariel and hadn't got this one!

rockpools I love the quote on the bag. 7y
Leftcoastzen Nice cover on Ariel, I am very Plathian and have not seen that photo. 7y
TrishB @Leftcoastzen I hadn't seen it either! Was nearly skipping out of the shop! 7y

Lindy Nice! When my Feminist Book Club discussed Ariel last year, many of us had different editions. It was interesting to compare the differences between them. (Poem selection, order of presentation, additional matter, etc.) 7y
TrishB @Lindy I'm fascinated by everything to do with this book! Hubby brought me a first edition last Christmas - I dont even want to imagine how much he paid for it!! 7y
Lindy @TrishB How many differences editions do you have? It sounds like a very special collection. 😊 7y
TrishB @Lindy so far only 6! But it's growing! Always on the lookout (affordable!) 7y

This is an emotional page turner. I've been in a particularly bad depression lately and it's like I put off reading this until the absolute right moment. Cook refers to herself so everything she says is painfully relatable: about death and breakups and unstable mental health. The poems repeat themselves on a "b-side" where new, mini poems are made by slashing out the majority of words and all-in it's a quick, satisfying read.

I hollowed out my memory; to make room for what's to come. I scooped out the funk; the letdowns, the heartache and left the happiness. Yet, I was no longer myself; unbalanced. Maybe I was meant to be sad, I thought. I plopped back in the painful and scooped out the happiness; the weddings, the graduations, the moments I laughed until I cried. Once again I found myself unstable. We need both. We need the good and the bad to be who we are.

I cannot remember where I heard about this book of poetry but so glad I did. I enjoyed the set up, like an old mixed tape (aging myself). It's deeply personal, authentic, and moving. I flagged multiple pages to return to. Next, I plan to set up her song playlist and see how it makes me feel. Throughly loved❤️.
