Bones & All
Bones & All: A Novel | Camille DeAngelis
14 posts | 17 read | 17 to read
2015 Alex Award Recipient! Maren Yearly is a young woman who wants the same things we all do. She wants to be someone people admire and respect. She wants to be loved. But her secret, shameful needs have forced her into exile. She hates herself for the bad thing she does, for what it's done to her family and her sense of identity; for how it dictates her place in the world and how people see her--how they judge her. She didn't choose to be this way. Because Maren Yearly doesn't just break hearts, she devours them. Ever since her mother found Penny Wilson's eardrum in her mouth when Maren was just two years old, she knew life would never be normal for either of them. Love may come in many shapes and sizes, but for Maren, it always ends the same-with her hiding the evidence and her mother packing up the car. But when her mother abandons her the day after her sixteenth birthday, Maren goes looking for the father she has never known, and finds much more than she bargained for along the way. Faced with a world of fellow eaters, potential enemies, and the prospect of love, Maren realizes she isn't only looking for her father, she's looking for herself. Camille DeAngelis' Bones & All is an astonishingly original coming-of-age tale that is at once a gorgeously written horror story as well as a mesmerizing meditation on female power and sexuality.

#ScarathlonPhotoChallenge #SkeletonBones

I have to laugh because I realized I used this book as a prompt for #Bones a couple years ago. But it‘s top of mind because I watched the movie last month on Amazon Prime. Maren, the MC, is an “eater” & devours people “bones & all.” 😱 I think I liked the book better than the movie but it‘s been a while since I read it.

+6 points for Team #SpookyGhostClub 🖤👻🖤

⭐⭐⭐

Did I read it just because there's a movie adaptation coming out in a few weeks?! Yes, of course.. can't wait to see Guadagnino & T.Chalamet together again!
The story itself is peculiar and interesting.. I didn't love the ending, but it was an overall okay reading.

#OminousOctober

It‘s hard to believe I read this book & posted it on Litsy 6 years ago. It came immediately to mind for “bones” - Maren, the MC, is an “eater” & devours people “bones & all.” I am excited to learn that it is now a movie coming out in November too. 📚🎬

It would work for a #TeamMonsterMash genre for #Scarathlon2022 💀🧟‍♀️🎃👻

Started this one yesterday. Kind of like a Zombie coming of age story.

Pickpick

Loved the dark premise of this book-Maren is 16 & an 'eater'-devouring people (bones & all) when they get too close & stir her emotions. Tired of the nomadic life this causes, her mother leaves on her 16th birthday & Maren sets off on a journey to find her father. I enjoyed the first 2/3-Maren coming-of-age in a unique & twisted setting, the creepiness, Maren's love for books, etc. but the ending fell short to me-seeming rushed & a bit unfinished.

DebinHawaii It still gets an overall pick & probably ⭐️⭐️⭐️ on Goodreads because of it's uniqueness & the fact that it kept me engaged. 7y
ItsAnotherJen What did u drizzle over your avocado? 7y
DebinHawaii @JenFowler It's a spicy garlic aioli that my local coffee shop puts on their avocado toast w/a sprinkle of celery salt. The combo is addicting. Here's a link to my 'knock-off' of their sauce recipe--it's pretty close: http://kahakaikitchen.blogspot.com/2017/02/the-book-tour-stops-here-review-of_14... 7y

Not book-related but made me laugh. I help friends by updating & 'fluffing' their resumes/cover letters. I don't charge them but most feel a need to give me something. One keeps giving me bakery treats though I asked her not to because I don't need all the sugar/fat. She brought me this baby pineapple upside down cake & said "I was going to get you cupcakes but this is better because it's fruit & no frosting!"(No...just LOTS of sugar/butter!!)??

DebinHawaii And I picked this library read off my TBR stack on an afternoon work break because it's next up to go back this month & there is an element of eating something you shouldn't in it. (Albeit a much grosser one as evidenced by the book title!) 😱😆 7y
DeborahSmall I often get the that job too. Although my term is: 'tarting it up' 😂💕 7y

A beautiful coming of age story, except the person coming of age is an 'eater' meaning she literally eats people, bones and all. She can't really help it, she doesn't even really understand it. Then her mother leaves her on her 16th birthday and she sets off to find the father she never knew. Solid read. @Liberty I think you might like this too.

3.5 Twisted, strange, macabre and ...well...different than anything I have read. While I appreciate the freshness of the material, it still suffered from a bit of a dragging pace and an ending that could have been satisfactory had it not forced itself so hard. This was almost a four star. I still recommend it for a creepy October read.
