Butcher's Crossing
Butcher's Crossing | John Williams
In his National Book Awardwinning novel Augustus, John Williams uncovered the secrets of ancient Rome. With Butchers Crossing, his fiercely intelligent, beautifully written western, Williams dismantles the myths of modern America. It is the 1870s, and Will Andrews, ?red up by Emerson to seek an original relation to nature, drops out of Harvard and heads west. He washes up in Butchers Crossing, a small Kansas town on the outskirts of nowhere.Butchers Crossingis full of restless men looking for ways to make money and ways to waste it. Before long Andrews strikes up a friendship with one of them, a man who regales Andrews with tales of immense herds of buffalo, ready for the taking, hidden away in a beautiful valley deep in the Colorado Rockies. He convinces Andrews to join in an expedition to track the animals down. The journey out is grueling, but at the end is a place of paradisal richness. Once there, however, the three men abandon themselves to an orgy of slaughter, so caught up in killing buffalo that they lose all sense of time. Winter soon overtakes them: they are snowed in. Next spring, half-insane with cabin fever, cold, and hunger, they stagger back to Butchers Crossing to ?nd a world as irremediably changed as they have been.

A book that immersed me into the gruelling life of hunting buffalo hides in 1870's kansas. Will Andrews is a harvard graduate who seeks to live life in the tough Western landscape. His experience is harsh + vividly described with astonishing prose in this excellent story. The writing, as with the wonderful Stoner, is incredible to the extent that I had to get a glass of water as they crossed the desert+ put on a jumper as they hit snow. Great read

LeahBergen Wonderful review! I must get to this one soon. 👍 7mo
Aimeesue We were stationed at Ft. Leavenworth KS for a few years. The prison had a buffalo yard around it! Kept open space between the prison and the community, and no one wants to try to break out through a bunch of buffalos! The buffalo were very neat to watch, though. 🦬 🦬 🦬 7mo
Tamra I really enjoyed William‘s novels. I wish he had written more! 7mo

Like Melville in Moby Dick, Williams harnesses all of his epic/narrative powers in this condemnation of capitalism and the extermination of species for speculative profits.

Cathythoughts I think he be will be perfect for the part … This will be anticipated (edited) 3y

Cathythoughts @Ruthiella I never took that into consideration… 😂 I think I‘m getting on a bit myself.. I think of Cage in his past parts.. 3y

vivastory @Cathythoughts @Ruthiella I haven't read the book yet, but after doing a bit of research it looks like Cage is cast as an older character in the book: Miller

vivastory @Cathythoughts @Ruthiella I'm honestly always a bit baffled by Nicolas Cage these days. I kind of admire how much he leans into accepting so many off the wall roles but he's just so hard to pin down now 3y
dylanisreading "In a turn of events..." Very diplomatic of NYRB. ? 3y
Ruthiella @Cathythoughts @vivastory I‘ve not read the book either, so what do I know? 😆 Agree that Cage can be amazing with the right material. 3y
merelybookish Hey Scott, unrelated to Nick Cage 😉 wondering if you're still into a Stone Angel buddy read. My copy arrived. 3y
vivastory @merelybookish Definitely! I was going to tag you about it. When do you want to start? 3y
merelybookish @vivastory I am good whenever. I'll be done my current book tomorrow. So could start soon. Or wait a bit. My reading isn't too ambitious these days. 3y
merelybookish Also did you see the email about NYRB is selling virtual tickets to watch the movie about Tove Jansson? https://watch.eventive.org/tove/play/60b933f35433b50053b66c7d 3y
vivastory @merelybookish Thanks for the link for the ticket. I just bought one. I've heard great things about it! What if we start on Monday? 3y
merelybookish @vivastory Monday sounds great! I think Sarah Barnes and I are going to try to coordinate a viewing together. Tove played for like a minute here in Denver but neither of us could make it. So glad for the virtual option. 3y
vivastory @merelybookish I'm happy to hear that the two of you are planning on watching it. I didn't even bother checking if it was playing here. Except for AMC & Screenland the theaters here were pretty much all permanently closed due to covid closures. Hopefully you have a peaceful weekend! 3y
Reggie So I had to come back here and just say that I was looking at movies to go watch at the movie theatre and in the upcoming movies section there was this movie called Pig and just like any curious person I clicked the trailer and its Nicholas Cage and his truffle pig has been stolen from him. I just….. there are no words right now Lololol just take a break man. Not every script is a winner,Nicholas!!!!! 3y
vivastory @Reggie There are a few people that I follow on social media who are surprisingly excited for Pig. They're usually more into Scorsese & Wong Kar Wai, so I was surprised by this. Then it dawned on me that it was more of a "so bad it's good" thing, but that doesn't work for me because I'm old enough to remember when Cage actually made good movies 3y

5 ⭐️It‘s the 1870‘s , & Andrews, at 23 , leaves Harvard to travel west & discover his country. He arrives in Butchers Crossing & the story moves quickly to the buffalo hunt.
The opposite of Stoner & yet echoes of Stoner in the end “ and then maybe when your ready to die it comes to you .... “
Images haunting & brutal & beautiful & of the buffalo
A powerful book , that like Stoner, will stay with me

5⭐️ This book is not just about buffalo hunting. Deeper within the story, there is a familiar sense of human ignorance. Motivated by greed, we grit our teeth and endure the worst; we often expect too much and self-destruct when things don‘t work out. Right?!

This is my second Williams after Stoner. It‘s wonderfully written with vivid imagery. I highly recommend this, even to those who are not fans of western 👍🏻

For me, Butcher‘s Crossing is the ultimate #wildwildwest village. John Williams describes it in such a way (the heat, the dust, the men, the streets) that I can completely visualize it, even years after reading the book. For me the chapters about this village are even better than those regarding the buffalo hunt. #heatofjuly

This unsentimental story of a man drawn to the West and a buffalo hunt is well written & bleak. Idealism & mythology about the American West fall away as the harshness and brutality of slaughter and survival overwhelm the beauty of the land & the young man‘s innocent hopes. The tale stings; I‘m horrified & saddened by this glimpse into a sad truth of white men in the West. Thanks to the NY Review of Books for publishing this neglected story.

Well-written but uncomfortable to read. By uncomfortable, I mean that you can sense the looming dread coming over you as you near the end. I had a hard time reading about the buffalo killing and the senseless refusal to stop killing until they wiped out the entire herd--and frankly, I wanted to see their greed punished.
