Caffeinated
Caffeinated: How Our Daily Habit Helps, Hurts, and Hooks Us | Murray Carpenter
18 posts | 13 read | 49 to read
Youll never think the same way about your morning cup of coffee. Mark McClusky, editor in chief of Wired.com and author of Faster, Higher, Stronger Journalist Murray Carpenter has been under the influence of a drug for nearly three decades. And hes in good company, because chances are youre hooked, too. Humans have used caffeine for thousands of years. A bitter white powder in its most essential form, a tablespoon of it would kill even the most habituated user. This addictive, largely unregulated substance is everywherein places youd expect (like coffee and chocolate) and places you wouldnt (like chewing gum and fruit juice), and Carpenter reveals its impact on soldiers, athletes, and even children. It can make you stronger, faster, and more alert, but its not perfect, and its role in health concerns like obesity and anxiety will surprise you. Making stops at the coffee farms of central Guatemala, a synthetic caffeine factory in China, and an energy shot bottler in New Jersey, among numerous other locales around the globe, Caffeinated exposes the high-stakes but murky world of caffeine, drawing on cutting-edge science and larger-than-life characters to offer an unprecedented understanding of Americas favorite drug.

If you are a soda or energy drinker do you know you are putting synthetic caffeine into your body? The description of the Chinese factories‘ filthy conditions are🤢 disgusting! You may swear off soda.

Lots of science, research, effects on sports, delivery mechanisms in Carpenter‘s extensively researched book. I don‘t think he left anything out. I love it when an author works hard for us curious readers and I feel he did this. 👏

Prairiegirl_reading Sounds very interesting! 6y
Rcoco But I love coffee it is one of the glorious pleasures of my day!! 6y
Dolly @Rcoco the author has no problem with coffee for the most part, it‘s the SYNTHETIC caffeine that is ADDED to drinks like soda and energy drinks. Coffee comes by its caffeine naturally. I ❤️ my coffee too! 6y

Trying to kick a bad habit! My lovely coworker let me borrow her copy (and "The Willpower Instinct" below it) this week.

BekahB Good luck!! Im not trying to kick caffeine, but I'm definitely on the path to get rid of my diet soda habit because of the chemicals. It will be a month this coming Wednesday since I've had one. I thought I was doing pretty well, but I started having dreams about drinking soda a couple days ago. Guess I'm not completely over it yet. 😂 7y
katrrosee @BekahB Congratulations! You can do it! I have a Diet Coke problem too...what was your secret? 7y
BekahB @KatrinaRose carbonated water is really helping me this time. I'm still drinking coffee and tea too because I'm not completely quitting caffeine. The fizz from the water helps replace the carbonation I miss with soda. 7y
katrrosee @BekahB That's a good idea! They come in so many yummy flavors now too. 7y

This is something I really need to be more aware of - in the long term I'm not doing myself/my body any favours by masking fatigue with caffeine. It's true, fatigue is telling us our body/mind needs restorative time. If we just ignore the signals we aren't getting rid of the problem, we are making it more detrimental.

CuriousG I hate it when I know something is right, and it's going to make me reevaluate something I REAAAALY love, like coffee. 😕 7y

So I've drank more coffee & tea (and craved more chocolate) during the first couple chapters of this than I have in weeks! I think I may be crushed when I get past the wonderful descriptions of all the delicious forms caffeine takes and into the 'what it does to your body' sections. #caffeinatedglow #coffeeandbooks #winterreading #thehighbeforethecrash #atwoodblendcoffee #birdfriendly #amberroast #peleeislandbirdconservatory

It's #NationalCoffeeDay so I wanted to share this amazing book (seen here with my breakfast). It is SO fascinating! It's not a lecture on not drinking caffeine but a look at its uses and a discussion on how there are still no real regulations - or even a comprehensive understanding - of the world's most widely used drug. (At his reading Murray brought a bag of powdered caffeine, enough to kill 16 people, which he legally bought on the Internet.)

krismlars That used to be my usual breakfast too! 8y

[DELETED] 2232195534 So I love my coffee. Best part of waking up...da da dee! That being said, I only have 2 cups a day. Sorta big cups. 😉 8y
TheLondonBookworm Coffee coffee coffee ☕️☕️☕️😬😬😬 8y
jpmcwisemorgan I've been trying to limit my caffeine and sugar intake. I've read that you shouldn't have caffeine immediately after waking up, something to do with your own body chemistry needing to work its magic. Plus, my doctor recommended not having caffeine after 3 so it doesn't mess with my sleep so much. I wonder what else I could learn from this book? 8y
tricours @jpmcwisemorgan I've read that too, but choose to ignore it! I have to get up at 5.45, and without coffee there's no way I'd make it to 8 without breakfast (if I have breakfast earlier I have to eat breakfast twice before lunch). I find that if I drink coffee after lunch it just makes me nauseated though... 8y
jpmcwisemorgan @tricours What's wrong with second breakfast? 😉 8y

Many fascinating facts about everyone's favorite substance. A bit slow at times (on audio anyway) but still worth it if you want to know more about how caffeine works and the amazing things it can make us do. I write this review as I wait for my tea to steep...
