I actually finished one in the month it was the pick of. I got this back in Feb. as part of a book swap, and would recommend every woman own it. While I didn't read every section, but at least skimmed over some sections that I didn't feel applied to my life. There is so much information about our lady parts that I would not have thought about or even known before reading this. In the future it will be a great reference if I come across issues.

It felt very empowering to read this book. Dr Jen Gunter (my new hero) has a vagenda: to empower women with accurate information about vaginas and vulvas. To help us know how our bodies should work and what to do when something isn‘t quite right. To fight against bias, lies, and shame that have been surrounding women‘s bodies and lives as a whole. I had so many “a-ha!” moments while reading and connecting dots ⤵️

sarahlandis to my health and sex life and to stories from others in my life. I wish I‘d had this book and eduction decades ago and I hope other people don‘t have to wait so long learn to as much as they can about their own anatomy (edited) 3y

Mehso-so

I have mixed feelings about this book. It has some valuable parts, but other parts are a bit questionable. I‘ve never had a doctor that said petroleum based products are safe to use on the genitals, but she‘s in love with them and thinks you should be too. Never mind they‘ve been on the OB/GYN “never ever” list for ages now. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics The cannabis chapter was weird to say the least. The book got long winded and repetitive in places. I‘m going to forego outlining my objections to her g-spot conversation or her “all pleasure roads lead to the clitoris” line. All I can say is that she‘s muddied the waters a bit there and over simplified things (no idea why). 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 3y
GingerAntics I think this book could do with some editing and pruning. There are some valuable pieces of information here, but they‘re a bit bogged down at times. I don‘t think this is the book I would choose to start a conversation with my daughter, either. It starts strong, but quickly loses steam. #DrJenGunter #TheVaginaBible #SexPositive2021 (edited) 3y
TrishB Great review 👍🏻 3y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Great review....reading straight through, I could see the repetitiveness too. I liked that it‘s set up almost reference-style so you could also just flip to the specific chapter on a subject and read that though, which might explain some of the repetitiveness too. 🤷‍♀️ 3y
GingerAntics @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I can see that, yeah. 3y
monkeygirlsmama I too have always heard petroleum jelly was a big no-no. That said, I'm still sort of intrigued by this book. May have to check it out one of these days. 3y
GingerAntics @monkeygirlsmama be careful with this book. I‘m still looking for a book that simplifies the complexities of the female anatomy without over simplifying. This turned into a diatribe or soap box moment, especially in repeatedly telling people to use petroleum based products, oil based lubricants, moisturising the vulva. It‘s hot mess in there. She could have ended it with the first section and been okay, but she just kept going. (edited) 3y
GingerAntics @monkeygirlsmama and going...and going...and going. 🤦🏼‍♀️ If I were a man reading that, I would have given up. I have the parts she‘s talking about and I ended up skipping large chunks of this book. There has to be a better book out there for us. 3y
monkeygirlsmama @GingerAntics Gosh that doesn't sound particularly enjoyable afterall. It's a shame when someone has a good premise and then can't deliver. 3y
GingerAntics @monkeygirlsmama right? A lot of people seemed to enjoy it, but it just didn‘t do it for me. 3y

Not down with this at. all.
How about, cosmetic surgery should be reserved for women who have a legitimate medical need for it and not for ridiculous and arbitrary beauty and patriarchal expectations.
#DrJenGunter #TheVaginaBible #SexPositive2021

Eggbeater Wow 😳😣 3y
GingerAntics @Eggbeater yeah. Not impressed. I can‘t imagine giving this to young women because of this part. How many of them are going to go get a ruler and start measuring, or just assume she‘s talking about them? Plus the petroleum based products that should never be anywhere near those parts. She may be a gynaecologist, but she goes against long held knowledge with no evidence to back up her claims. 3y
Eggbeater I can't imagine you should be telling people anything that doesn't center around body positivity. Everybody is different for f***'s sake. I'm horrified at the thought of little girls thinking there is something wrong with them. 3y
See All 7 Comments
GingerAntics @Eggbeater right? Shouldn‘t the message be “everyone is different?” She says most women are perfectly normal, but then adds this. Wouldn‘t the more appropriate response, especially from a doctor, be “if you‘re concerned, talk to your doctor about it”? 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I took this part more as, people were asking for surgery for any normal asymmetry and she was saying, don‘t even think about it unless it‘s more than xyz, any doctor doing it for this or less than this is just feeding on your insecurities and taking your money. 3y
GingerAntics @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I can see that, but maybe it would have been better to just say “only in extreme cases or in situations where it‘s literally negatively effecting your physical health.” I feel like this is going to have insecure women rooting around down there with a ruler. If you‘re going to be down there, it shouldn‘t be for anything by pleasure. Just my opinion. 3y

I KNEW IT!!! I bloody well knew it!!! This book was written in 2002 (I know because I doubt checked when she mentioned VCRs) four years before I had my first reproductive exam. 10 years ago, my GP didn‘t care if I didn‘t want her to do it, she didn‘t care if I didn‘t want one, she made me have a pelvic exam every year. Even when I did my research and suggested it wasn‘t necessary, she did it anyway. MOTHER 🤬
#DrJenGunter #TheVaginaBible

BiblioLitten I was discussing this with my friends today!! 😮 3y
GingerAntics @BiblioLitten I think it‘s so traditional to do them yearly, most people don‘t know the guidelines changed 20 years ago now. Doctors certainly should know, though. Of course, if someone has a known issue, in those select cases a yearly exam is appropriate. For most people, it‘s ever 3-5 years apparently. 3y
See All 6 Comments
GingerAntics @BiblioLitten I love that you and your friends were talking about it, though. It certainly needs to be talked about more, especially among female friends. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa There were a few parts in here where I thought...that‘s not what my Dr told me. The one that comes to mind was the HPV vaccine, I was told I was too old to have that...this book seemed to say otherwise. 3y
GingerAntics @Riveted_Reader_Melissa yeah, I‘ve heard about age limits on the HPV vaccine. This particular bit of info I‘ve heard from many places. It seems some docs just want to money from doing it annually. All the petroleum products freaked me out. That‘s a no-no. She is literally the only doctor or woman I‘ve ever heard say that‘s a great idea. Everyone else says to avoid it. 3y

Shout out to the opioid crisis. This is crazy. So every year (every day even) all these women give birth, and 1/3 of them are given opioids and if 1 in 300 will end up addicted, that‘s at least 33 new addicts A DAY in America. No, this isn‘t a problem.
#DrJenGunter #TheVaginaBible #SexPositive2021 #opioidcrisis

ItsAnotherJen 😳😳 3y
GingerAntics @ItsAnotherJen right? It‘s stunning to break it down like that. It‘s like, today, a classroom full of women who gave birth today, will become addicts. Tomorrow, a whole new classroom full of all new women who gave birth that day, will also become addicts. It just repeats every single day, even during school holidays and school shut downs because of a pandemic. 🤯🤯🤯 The question is, how many of these new addictions could be avoided? 3y

@julesG this makes me think of the time you told me Reading is like sex, only do it if you want to. So now, I‘m thinking of it as a reading party. I‘m not even sure if that‘s a thing, but I‘m a nerd so if it is, that would be my kind of party. 🤣😂🤣

julesG Reading parties are great. Can't remember in which context I equated reading with sex, but it sounds like something I'd say. 😁 3y
GingerAntics @julesG 🤣😂🤣 I can‘t remember now, either. I think it had something to do with putting too much presser on myself to read certain kinds of books because I should, but then not reading much because the books I “should” read weren‘t really doing it for me. Or something. 🤷🏼‍♀️😂🤣😂 3y

This is a book every woman should read and own. She dissects what medicine knows and what historically was guesswork or outright falsehoods based on patriarchy and myths of uncleanliness. What you need to know through different life changes, what‘s an old wives tale and totally unproven, what you should be asking your doctor about, what treatments tend to have proven results and which are the modern equivalents of natural/celebrity snake oil.

CarolynM Stacking for my daughter as well as me🙂 3y
GingerAntics Looking forward to this one in February. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @CarolynM I think you‘ll both like it. It‘s very plainly written, not tons of medical speak. And you can read it straight through like I did or use it as reference and flip to the section you want to know more about. There are things that are great for a young impressionable person, like stay away from things like douching, and why, especially when all the commercials say you “need” it to be “clean”, and stuff about if you are going to wax or⤵️ 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ... or shave because of current treads what you need to be careful of and watch for. Then there‘s also stuff about menopause and some of the changes your body makes, and things that might make that easier, things to talk to your doctor about if they bother you versus things that are completely normal, don‘t sweat it. ⤵️ (edited) 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa So overall it covered a lot of bases... and you can easily check out pain or discomfort, or yeast infections, or basic ways to discuss things with your doctor so it‘s less stressful, or look up things you might not want to ask anyone about, and why google isn‘t the best source, and why not to trust supposedly medical articles from private corporate research, but start medical questions at XYZ on the Internet first because they are peer reviewed. 3y

An aside...this 1 paragraph explains so much about what is wrong with the US health insurance
& pharmaceutical industry. In the US you must buy your own health insurance or go without & pay full price, BOTH are extremely expensive for those with low income. Then a company that develops a life saving medication can both charge a ton, even if they developed it with public money AND can block generics, & can simultaneously sell cheaply elsewhere.🤯

Jgotham I‘ve always wondered HOW they can do that while using OUR money 3y

When your library ebook is due back today, but you just haven‘t had time to finish it, and now you‘ll have to put it on hold again for like another 4ish weeks until you see it again.... but wait, miraculously it‘s on kindle sale today!

That‘s some great #BookSerendipity #Bookendipity especially since this was one I was thinking I should buy anyway. 👍

That rarely ever happens, like once every 20 blue moons, but I was really excited! #BookNerd

GingerAntics Oh, it‘s on sale on Apple Books, too. Are you enjoying this book? Im trying to do some more sex positive reads. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GingerAntics Yes, I really enjoying it...which sounds weird, but it‘s both no-nonsense, direct, but also funny at times. So everything you needed to know and they never taught you in health class, but also why some myths started and stayed because of lack of science, etc. And she‘s a gynecologist, so more trustworthy than some internet searches. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GingerAntics If you pull up the book itself, you can see a few other posts by others who have read it and see if it looks interesting to you. 3y

GingerAntics I like that. Sadly, I got my sex ed from religion class, so I‘ve got some work to do. 🤣😂🤣 I heard of this thing along the lines of “Purity Culture Drop Out Support Group” or something and thought maybe I should do that. I‘ve got a collection of books, and I think I‘m going to read sex positive books throughout 2021. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GingerAntics Well then this is a good one to start with, because she actually starts at the beginning..diagrams, what‘s the name for parts, how they work. It sounds lame, but it‘s really not, health class was all I got, a lot of exercising is good, eat right, CPR and the 1 day they separated the boys and girls to talk separately....that‘s it officially. And when I was in HS, you couldn‘t google it yet! LOL however now you may be able to, (edited) 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ...but the misinformation is pretty bad too. And she definitely talks about the Purity idea, where that stemmed from, and how it‘s been used by “the patriarchy” since, etc 3y
GingerAntics 🤣😂🤣 luckily I have some really sexy positive friends, so I actually know part names, uses, etc. Pretty much all the useful info I ever had came from people outside the US. I have another that seems a good place to start as well. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GingerAntics So this one is, at least so far...know your body, know what‘s normal, know when they are just trying to sell you something that you don‘t need, to cure something that‘s natural. Etc. so a bible/handbook for your body. I have a few of those on my to read pile, so maybe I‘ll see if we have any match up? Right this second the other 2 I can think of that I have are 3y
GingerAntics I have Come as You Are. The Body is Not an Apology I‘m on the fence about. Maybe I‘ll see what you think of it. 3y
GingerAntics Another I have that just has an amazing title and sounds so good is 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Well, they all look interesting...maybe we‘ll both have to see how the other one likes their pile as they go and decide what to add from there. We both need more books to read, right? 🤣 3y
GingerAntics Obviously!!! Clearly neither of us have nearly enough books to read. 🤣😂🤣 3y
GingerAntics Honestly, I‘m just happy someone else is doing some sex positive reading. I was debating weather or not I should post on Litsy about that particular reading list/topic. I‘m feeling much better about that now. Thank you!!! 3y
GingerAntics Just got a recommendation for another book. It‘s got a bit of a shocking title, but the part that is actually shocking is that it used to be a title of respect for women before it was taken over as an insult. Stupid men. 3y
GingerAntics @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I was looking at that one as well. The audiobook is the same price as the ebook, so I‘m wavering on which one to get. I did get “The Body is Not an Apology” though. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GingerAntics It‘s on Hoopla too if your library works with them. 3y
GingerAntics Nope, just Libby. Maybe the new one here in Moorhead does, but they‘re closed so I haven‘t been able to get a new library card. 3y
GingerAntics I just found a new book that sounds really interesting for this topic and several others, actually. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GingerAntics That one does look interesting! 3y

I loved this book, I learned a lot about my body. Dr. Gunter is pro-choice AF, she‘s an lgbtq+ally, she‘s funny and tells it like it is; an amazing ob/gyn. Anyone who has a vagina is on the vagenda to be educated/empowered and needs this book!

quote
JenniferEgnor

The patriarchy and snake oil have had a good run, but I‘m done with how they negatively affect and weaponize women‘s health. So I am not going to stop swinging my bat until everyone has the tools to be an empowered patient and those who seek to subjugate women by keeping them from facts about their bodies have shut up and taken a seat in the back of class. That‘s my vagenda.

Seriously, Dr. Gunter. You rock!🖤

Vaginal tightening sticks: Anything offered to tighten your vagina is an astringent and will damage the mucosa and your mucus. It is also a part of the patriarchal idea that a “used” vagina stretches and is undesirable. This mythology harms women medically and emotionally, and people who promote it should be ashamed of themselves.

Preach!!!

quote
JenniferEgnor

Steaming the vagina: this is promoted to “cleanse” the uterus. This ties into a destructive myth that the uterus is unclean or that a period is cleaning the uterus. The idea of a toxin-filled uterus is literally used by many cultures to exclude women from society – it‘s a defining characteristic of the patriarchy. So telling women this exists is promoting a patriarchal idea. This is harmful on so many levels.

quote
JenniferEgnor

Goop‘s feminine energy, from what I saw at one of their *cough* “health conferences,” is hopelessly hetero normative and conforms to the patriarchal ideal. A vagina does not make you a woman, how you feel inside does.

This is a great start to talk about how the gender assigned at birth does not define us.

quote
JenniferEgnor
post image

Does the site use words like “detox” and “cleanse”? Words like “pure”, “clean”, and “natural”? Women are constantly fed lies about toxins in their periods or that the vagina is dirty. “Pure”, “clean”, and “natural” are just modern riffs on that destructive messaging. They also do not mean anything medically. You want sound hypotheses and clinical evidence, not patriarchy‘s dog whistle.

Folx, this is real talk from an amazing ob/gyn⬆️

Does your doctor get money from Big Pharma? You can look them up on Dollars for Docs, a service from ProPublica. It does not mean your doctor is bad, but if they recommend a medication and they also get $30,000 a year from the company that makes that drug, they might be biased in their recommendations.

As we evolved and begin to walk upright, physically taking the vaginal opening further away from dirt, the need for a physical barrier for the lower vagina lessened, and evolution became less invested in a rigid, physically protective hymen. This would explain why we now have so many variations in hymen shape: it is simply no longer biologically important.

The problem? The vulva is often neglected. A lot of this vulvar neglect is a result of patriarchal society‘s lack of investment in and fear of female sexual pleasure. When we exclude the vulva from conversations about women‘s bodies and sexuality, we erase the organ responsible for female orgasm. We also make it harder for women to communicate with their healthcare providers.

The vulva is the ultimate multitasker – it is the most important organ for sexual pleasure, it protects the tissues at the vaginal opening, it‘s built to handle the irritation of urine and feces, and it can deliver a baby and heal as if nothing happened. And do it all again. Oh, yeah – and multiple orgasms. The penis and scrotum have nothing on the vulva.
