When your library holds come in all at once…way too many books! I had wanted to read Macy‘s more recent follow up to Dopesick, Raising Lazarus, but I thought it would mean more if I read her first book. Started reading Dopesick this afternoon. Macy‘s approach is to research & interview families in Appalachia, suburbs & city of W. vA & VA whose lives have been changed irrevocably by the opioid crisis.#libraryholds #opioidcrisis.

Shout out to the opioid crisis. This is crazy. So every year (every day even) all these women give birth, and 1/3 of them are given opioids and if 1 in 300 will end up addicted, that‘s at least 33 new addicts A DAY in America. No, this isn‘t a problem.

GingerAntics @ItsAnotherJen right? It‘s stunning to break it down like that. It‘s like, today, a classroom full of women who gave birth today, will become addicts. Tomorrow, a whole new classroom full of all new women who gave birth that day, will also become addicts. It just repeats every single day, even during school holidays and school shut downs because of a pandemic. 🤯🤯🤯 The question is, how many of these new addictions could be avoided? 3y

alisiakae I bought this one during Prime Day. It will be a tough read for me, my birth mother struggled with addiction (heroin in her younger years, pain meds in later years). She died of an accidental overdose at age 50. Her hometown is known for his high rates of heroin addiction. 😢 7y
