First King of Shannara
First King of Shannara | Terry Brooks

Horrified by the misuse of magic they had witnessed during the First War of the Races, the Druids at Paranor devoted themselves to the study of the old sciences, from the period before the collapse of civilization a thousand years before. Only the Bremen and a few trusted associates still studied the arcane arts. And for his persistence, Bremen found himself outcast, avoided by all but the few free-thinkers among the Druids. But his removal from Paranor was not altogether a terrible thing, for Bremen learned that dark forces were on the move from the Northlands. That seemingly invincible armies of trolls were fast conquering all that lay to their south. That the scouts for the army--and its principal assassins--were Skull Bearers, disfigured and transformed Druids who had fallen prey to the seductions of the magic arts. And that at the heart of the evil tide was an archmage and former Druid named Brona!Using the special skills he had acquired through his own study of Magic, Bremen was able to penetrate the huge camp of the Troll army and learn many of its secrets. And he immediately understood that if the peoples of the Four Lands were to escape eternal subjugation they would need to unite. But, even united, they would need a weapon, something so powerful that the evil magic of Brona, the Warlock Lord, would fail before its might...

I hate it when there's a line like this in a book you're re-reading & you know exactly everything that's about to go wrong for your favorite character 😢

On a happier note, this is the start of my mom, @curiouserandcurioser & I re-reading the entire Shannara series before the last book comes out next year!

💩My first read of 2019 spoiled a series I want to read! Ages ago I found a reading order guide for new readers on the Terry Brooks website & it said the tagged book had spoilers so DON'T READ IT BEFORE READING HERITAGE OF SHANNARA. I totally forgot & thought First King spoiled the original trilogy! I've read it so hey, prequel time! 🙄 Guess I'll shelve Heritage & read it later when I've hopefully forgotten all the prequel details. #IHATESPOILERS

DGRachel Oh no! 5y
RainyDayReading I recently went through and wrote down the reading order for all his Shannara books. I think what I found put first king after the original trilogy but before heritage...in any case I will be switching it to after heritage now. That‘s rather annoying, sorry that that happened 😞 5y
Mimi28 Sorry that happened 5y

TK-421 @RainyDayReading Thanks, it really is annoying! Here's a link to the reading order lists on his website if you want to check it out: http://terrybrooks.net/books/reading-orders/ 5y
TK-421 @DGRachel @Mimi28 Thanks 😕 I'm just kicking myself that I relied on my lame memory & didn't double check the list before reading the book! 5y
CoverToCoverGirl That stinks! 🤭☹️ 5y

Poor Minerva! Her spay surgery was yesterday & she is stuck wearing an E. collar (aka the Cone of Shame) since she won't leave her stitches alone. Fortunately, she's a bit calmer today so we got some snuggle time in. I haven't been able to read much because she's been so affectionate but I'm not complaining one bit! #CatsofLitsy #LittenKitten

TK-421 @JennyM @Margievz @CouronneDhiver @QuietlyLaura @LauraBeth Thanks for your kind words 😊 She's starting to feel better but unfortunately the cone has to stay on for awhile. 😿 5y
Lauram Aww, booboo! She‘s grown so much! 5y

I started reading fantasy at the end of the 1980s, when #quest fantasy books were very popular and probably no one more so than Terry Brooks.
Is it just my feeling, or those 'classic' fantasy quests have fallen out of favour lately? The have a very peculiar flavour when you read them today, but that's part if their charme, in my opinion.

#CoolBooks #fantasy

laurieluna I think for me it's the over done tropes. A new series I'm looking forward to and which plays on it big time is the tagged one. That being said I do love David Eddings, Terry Brooks etc. 6y
Linsy I agree, classic quest books seem to be out of fashion. They‘re still full of nostalgia for me though. 6y
JazzFeathers @miralunasbooknook Fantasy was popular between the 1970s and 1980s, more than it is now. Many stories were written and published, and l'm sorry to say that many were a bit lazy. I've read quite a few myself. Gave the genre a bad rep, l think. 6y
JazzFeathers @Linsy l read an anthology fron the 1980s a few years ago, first time l read anything such since the 1980s. It did have a very characteristic vibe. Vintage, sure. Fantasy is very different, today. But still those stories have their charme, l think. 6y

Most of these are #tbr or #tbrr. First King of Shannara is on my #LitsyAtoZ2018 list. I've been wanting to read The Lovely Bones & A Game of Thrones for years! The Kitchen God's Wife & Interview with the Vampire have been on the reread list for a couple years as well. Come to think of it, I'll probably reread Mort someday soon & if I ever get my hands on a copy of The Salmon of Doubt, I'll reread Dirk Gently. #Blue #ReadingResolutions

Another recommendation from a friend! Apparently this is an entire series. I had never heard of it but if you like fantasy, this would be right up your alley! I am trying to be adventurous this year and read books I normally wouldn‘t read. This would definitely fit in that category! Anyone already know and love the Shannara series?

GarthRanzz Honestly, the first Shannara trilogy are my favourite fantasy books outside of A Song of Ice and Fire. I devoured The Sword of Shannara multiple times as a teen when I couldn‘t get through one round of Tolkien. 6y
xicanti I looooooved the Shannara books when I was a teenager, but I tried to reread the first one a few years later and found the writing left a lot to be desired. Hopefully this one works out for you! 6y
Sungirl79 Love Terry Brooks!! 6y

RainyDayReading I read the original trilogy ages ago but really enjoyed it! Don‘t remember all of it though so I‘m planning on going back and doing a re-read so I can continue on with the rest of the chronicles. 6y
Bourriquet76 My husband‘s favorite book is Elfstones of Shannara. I think that‘s part of the series. First King was the prequel but came out later. 6y

Mehso-so

I feel like I started at the wrong part of this series. I never felt fully pulled in to the world and I ended up remaining an arm's distance from it all. This might be because of where I started but I definitely felt like I was missing vital lore and background information. Maybe starting somewhere else would have prevented that.

TK-421 On the Terry Brooks website, I think there's a recommended reading order for new readers. If memory serves, it's recommended to start with the Sword of Shannara instead of this prequel. 6y
mkritchey @TK-421 I have the page bookmarked for reference now ✌️ 6y
