The summer of 1985 changes Reggies life. An awkward thirteen-year-old, she finds herself mixed up with the school outcasts. That same summer, a serial killer called Neptune begins kidnapping women. He leaves their severed hands on the police department steps and, five days later, displays their bodies around town. Just when Reggie needs her mother, Vera, the most, Veras hand is found on the steps. But after five days, theres no body and Neptune disappears. Now, twenty-five years later, Reggie is a successful architect who has left her hometown and the horrific memories of that summer behind. But when she gets a call revealing that her mother has been found alive, Reggie must confront the ghosts of her past and find Neptune before he kills again.

Jennifer McMahon is one of my top authors. I'm working my way through her back list and I really enjoyed this one. I was invested right away. I did think the book dragged on for a while and I wasn't too shocked to who it was. But I still enjoyed the ride. 4/5

An earlier book by one of my favorite authors. It definitely wasn‘t as good as her newer books but it was still very good!!! I had a hunch about who the killer was very early and was right. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

OMG. This book was quite a ride. The back and forth between the past and present made for interesting parallels. Part coming of age, part detective story, 3 young teens try to figure out who the serial killer is that‘s terrorizing their small town. The hunt continues in present day when the last victim turns up alive, and the serial killer seems to take up where they left off. Had me stumped until the very end. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

EvieBee I didn‘t realize she wrote books other than historical ghost stories. 2y
Suelizbeth @EvieBee yeah, I was surprised, too. 2y

Another solid read from Jennifer McMahon. Not as creepy as I'm used to but definitely twisty and intriguing!

25 years after her mother was taken by a serial killer nicknamed Neptune because he feeds victims a last meal of lobster, renowned architect Reggie Dufrane gets a call from her aunt that her mother has been found at a hospital and is dying of cancer. Reggie returns to her childhood home where she has to confront her past and navigate a difficult present.

Carolyn11215 Photo is picture of a nautilus house, which I imagine is similar to the one Reggie was planning to build when she got the call about her mother. 5y

What a thrill! There was a lot going on here, and it kept jumping from present to past, which I know some people don't like much. Though I felt the author did a wonderful job with the two intertwining timelines. It definitely has some wonderful plot twists! I recommend this book for anyone not squeamish/easily frightened by serial killer stories.
📚📚 Happy Reading! 📚📚

I was quickly pulled in and couldn‘t wait to learn Neptune‘s true identity...kept me guessing. Mothers & Daughters; the stories we tell ourselves vs. the Truth. Thank you, @Smangela for the recommendation. I‘m excited to read more of her work! 📚

Smangela I read one of her books and then snowballed into all of them a few years ago - now I have to play catch up! I‘m so glad you enjoyed it! 5y
JackOBotts @Smangela I can‘t wait to do the same! But I should probably tackle the sizable #TBR collection on my shelves. #readerproblems #neverenoughbooks 5y

Good page turner about a serial killer and the effect on people left behind. I even enjoyed the flashbacks which I find problematic a lot of the time. I didn't even have the Good lord what are you doing thoughts when the main character was investigating!

I have only read a couple of Jennifer McMahon's book but love how gently creepy her books are. This isn't disappointing me at all so far!

I felt like I needed something "lighter" to break up NW with. So I decided on a 400+ page book about a never caught serial killer. #HowIRoll #MorbidLikeThat ?

Mehso-so

I felt like I was rereading Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn, a book I just read not that long ago.

TheLudicReader I loved her novel Promise Not To Tell, but have been sorely disappointed by the other books I've read by her: Dismantled was a hot mess and The Winter People started off ok and then just got really awful. 7y
Bostonmomx2 I think that happens when a book in a relatively quiet genre explodes. Seems then ALL the books that come out after are too similar (vampires anyone?). 😀 7y

Perfectly gorgeous fall day. On my #tbrlist "The One I Left Behind" by Jennifer McMahon. Just finished the historical gothic novel Rebecca by Daphne Du Mauer. Very much like a Pride and Prejudice with dark twists. So I am excited to read this thriller after having finished Rebecca. #novelnovember
