Ducks, Newburyport | Lucy Ellmann
129 posts | 18 read | 13 reading | 87 to read
Latticing one cherry pie after another, an Ohio housewife tries to bridge the gaps between reality and the torrent of meaningless info that is the United States of America. She worries about her children, her dead parents, African elephants, the bedroom rituals of 'happy couples', Weapons of Mass Destruction, and how to hatch an abandoned wood pigeon egg. Is there some trick to surviving survivalists? School shootings? Medical debts? Franks 'n' beans? A scorching indictment of America's barbarity, past and present, and a lament for the way we are sleepwalking into environmental disaster, Ducks, Newburyport is a heresy, a wonder - and a revolution in the novel.

Are you the type of reader that gulps books and races to place a ✅ in a column? Do you ever slow down to savor, to enjoy nuances, to put the book down and image a scenario conjured up by an author? What about 📖 gives you joy and is it confined to one thing?
I urge those who ❤️ reading- really 💕 the act of reading to sit &savor Ducks, Newburyport. It wouldn‘t give you a fast ✅ like a fast food drive thru. (Cont. 👇🏼)

Dolly It‘s a meal of wine, many spices and elaborate desserts. Please consider if you love the experience of reading and not just finishing book after book. (edited) 1w

I finally have a copy! I'm not sure when I'll have the mental space to take on a text like this one but summer might be a good time to get into it 🤞🤞

Hoopiefoot Nice! I‘ve been in the process of reading it for a few months now. I‘m not always in the right headspace for it, but I‘ve enjoyed popping in and out when I have time and am in the mood for it. 2w

But I‘m still thinking about it. I might go back.

It took almost a month but I did it! There is something compelling about the voice of the unnamed narrator as she recounts random thoughts, memories and her anxieties about 21st century America. The text has a certain rhythm that I noted and admired. Not perfect, I have a couple of quibbles but definitely a work of genius and a book encapsulating a slice of our current fraught political and cultural landscape.

Cathythoughts Well done 👍🏻❤️.... still not sure I can do it though 1mo
Ruthiella @batsy I hope you like it. It is quite the investment of reading time.😬 1mo
Ruthiella @Suet624 Thanks! Give it the 50 page rule and end if it doesn‘t work for you. I found it really compelling once I got over the initial hurdle.😀 1mo

Ruthiella @ljuliel I don‘t know how long it took her but for sure you can tell every word was carefully chosen. The randomness is intentional...if that makes sense. 😀 1mo

Just over 100 pages in, I‘m really liking this. I‘m savoring it actually. How does one decide to buy or even commit to read a thousand page brick? Full pages with few paragraphs, punctuation that could be a gimmick- I hate gimmicks. Where does one stop to eat dinner?

There‘s a rhythm here. After a few pages you feel like you‘re on a swing rising and falling and understanding why the author wrote as she did.

Possibly my best book this year.

Megabooks I‘m reading it as an ebook 10-15 pages at a time and it is hard to know where to stop! 1mo
Dolly @Megabooks I also have it on ebooks for a couple more days so I learned to highlight, but after that...I don‘t like to write in books. Maybe I‘ll make a tiny pencil mark and erase it. 1mo

Megabooks @Cinfhen Thanks!! The nonfiction was a random pick from my library wishlist, and it‘s actually good! 👍🏻 Health: Most of the time. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I don‘t think I‘ve improved a lot over the past week, but things usually aren‘t terrible if I take my meds on time. Lots of factors going on there. 1mo
Megabooks @squirrelbrain I love Therese Plummer‘s narration, so consider the audiobook of you have credits or the UK audible sale is as good as the US one! 1mo
Megabooks @Cathythoughts I really love Ann but I‘m not sure if I can read about a dad dying right now. 1mo
squirrelbrain @Megabooks - I still haven‘t finished my first ever audiobook (started it in April)! I‘m going to have to get into the swing of it though, as I‘m hoping my train commute will turn into a walking commute soon.... 1mo
Megabooks @squirrelbrain I would never have started if I had never had a work commute where I drove from random small town A to B. But once I got in the rhythm I was like, hmmm... listen while I do laundry, do dishes, shower, vacuum, etc. honestly, it got crazy for awhile! 😂😂 But if I hadn‘t had that commute, I may never have gotten into it. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ 1mo

Megabooks @Cinfhen Thanks for asking and keeping up with me!! Megabooks @Emilymdxn so far it kind of reminds me of the weird associations and thoughts I have during a hypomanic episode. Although sometimes mine are linking songs together as well as word association. It‘s a bit odd reading someone else think like that!! 2mo

December 9 - #Adventrecommends day 9

There‘s probably no surprise to anyone that this is a book a want to recommend. A book about the big things and the smaller things, about family and loss of parents, about gun control, about our impact on nature and water pollution. A book about culture, about movies both old and new, there‘s references that I get and definitely many I don‘t get.

I finished this on Monday and what an experience. The fact that we hear the thoughts of an Ohio housewife as she bakes cinnamon rolls and pies, the fact that her thoughts drifts between the importance of family and the loss of her mother, gun control, the way humans interfere with nature, water pollution, and old movies, musicals and books, the fact that I probably missed a lot of the cultural references, the fact that this book influences you.

I finally did it!

This wavered towards a so-so about 3/4 of the way through....but picked itself up again for the last 150 pages, when all of the disparate threads came together.

I actually enjoyed the unusual approach (no sentences or paragraphs) and the ‘stream of consciousness‘ style, but it‘s definitely not a book you can read in one go - you need to read it in chunks. I just wish it had been a 700 page book rather than 1000 pages...

#BookReport

I‘ve read 270p in Ducks, and is now at 451p. The more I read in this novel, the more I love it. The protagonist‘s thoughts are really interesting and takes you all over the place from making pies and cinnamon buns, to musicals to school shootings and other shootings.

I‘ve listened to 2hrs of Educated and is now at 5hrs 38min. The more I listen the more shocked I get over Tara‘s childhood.

Cinfhen Your #BookReport is actually making me want to pick Ducks back up!! And I bet Educated is good on audio. Her childhood is 🍌👖 3mo
LauraBeth I read Ducks and really liked it! 3mo
Scochrane26 I saw Ducks at the bookstore the other day, & it‘s huge. I knew it was, but seeing it w/ other books made me realize the size. I listened to about 2 hrs of Educated & will start over w/ physical copy soon. I‘m not sure I get yet what all the shock is about. Maybe I haven‘t gotten far enough in. 3mo

AnneCecilie @Scochrane26 She‘s living with an extremely religious father and basically everything is forbidden. Visiting the hospital when needed is something they try to avoid even when they are in car accidents and have work incidents where they hit their head. One of her brothers physically abuse on at least two occasions. They don‘t attend school. To me this is all very shocking and completely different from my own childhood. (edited) 3mo
AnneCecilie @Cinfhen I‘m happy if I can convince you to try out Ducks. It‘s an experience. So far I‘m enjoying the audio experience of Educated. This is the second book I‘ve listened to on audio so can‘t really say if it‘s good or not. I so agree with you on Tara‘s childhood. 3mo
AnneCecilie @LauraBeth I‘m so enjoying reading it. 3mo
Scochrane26 @AnneCecilie I agree it‘s very weird & obviously, dad is mentally ill. I haven‘t gotten to the abuse yet. I think I‘m less shocked right now because I‘ve heard so much about it that my expectations of crazy are too high. I also work w/ traumatized kids, although I haven‘t encountered the no doctors, off the grid situation. I‘m still interested in it, just didn‘t have time to finish audio & have physical on hold. 3mo
Sace I'm afraid of Ducks because of the size, but the posts I'm seeing about it are all have interesting things to say about it so part of me wants to try it. 3mo
AnneCecilie @Sace I would absolutely give this book a chance. I love chunksters so was not scared by its seize and then I saw all the positive reviews (edited) 3mo
AnneCecilie @Scochrane26 I don‘t live in the US so this book hasn‘t gotten as much attention where I live. So I wasn‘t quite sure what to expect. If hadn‘t been for Litsy I‘m not sure I ever would have picked it up. 3mo

It‘s books like this one that drive me to my e-reader. My old hands can‘t hold this monster and it is just uncomfortable to read. The story, however, is magnificent!

RachelO Yep. Safe to say, I‘d NEVER get through it in print. Not sure I will in ebook either, but I plan to give it a go sometime. 3mo
Tamra Agreed, it‘s so uncomfortable to read chunksters on paper. 3mo
Sace The photo alone makes my wrists hurt! 3mo

Lindy I have trouble with my wrists, so I have a strategy for chunksters: they live on my table during reading and all I need to do is turn the pages. No curling up on the couch or reading in bed with The Crimson Petal and the White or 3mo

Texreader That‘s a sad truth isn‘t it? 3mo
AnneCecilie @Texreader Yes, it‘s. Just imagine it being the other way around. 3mo
Emilymdxn So true. This writer is so good at putting her finger on stuff like that 3mo

Pickpick

The fact that it took me three weeks but I finished, the fact that this book is amazing and you should read it, the fact that it is still time for men to shut up, especially about its length, but also about guns, the fact that Man Up and put the Guns Down...

squirrelbrain The fact that I love your review.... the fact that I‘m nearly 3/4 of the way through.... 3mo

#WeeklyForcast

Over the next week, I‘ll continue my reading of Ducks, and hopefully get in some listening to of Educated.

Cinfhen I fee like you‘ll be busy with Ducks for a while 😂🦆 3mo
AnneCecilie @Cinfhen Probably 😉 but over the next, I will at least have more time to read after work 3mo

#BookReport
This week I‘ve been to the movies twice, I saw Judy and a Spanish movie w Antonio Banderas & Penelope Cruz. Then I‘ve spent time watching Fischer Chess on the TV. There‘s been chess fever in Norway ever since Magnus Carlson won his first world championship title in 2013. It was rest day on Wednesday.

So I‘ve read 40p in the tagged book and is now on p180. I‘m really enjoying it so far and the thoughts that‘s put forward.
⬇️

AnneCecilie I‘ve read Dumbo and loved that. I love the movie and the book was definitely for fans of the movie. I‘ve listened to 2hrs of Educated and am now at 3 hrs 18 min, and I find Tara‘s childhood interesting and completely different from mind. I completely forgot this in my weekly forecast, it probably tells a lot about how used I‘m to audio. #NFNov 3mo
AceOnRoam I really loved Ducks, glad you're enjoying it too. 3mo
Cinfhen Great week of reading!!! 3mo

AnneCecilie @Cinfhen Thanks 😊 but I usually read more than 40 p in a week, hopefully next week will be better. 3mo
AnneCecilie @AceOnRoam Everyone seems to love this. 3mo

I‘m #LookingForwardToReading my tbr. I‘ve signed up for #NFNov so there‘s mostly non-fiction but I also have some library books to read.

In addition to the pictured books, I‘m also reading the tagged book. And there‘s still plenty to be read in that with 850p left.

The protagonist‘s thoughts on guns and gun control. So this entire page, but especially the underlined lines. These numbers, I‘m speechless

Again, as a Norwegian I have a hard time to understand American gun control laws.

Scochrane26 As an American with a father who owns guns for hunting, I also have a hard time understanding our gun laws & people‘s obsession w/ them. Not ones for hunting because I know a lot of people who hunt, but for any other purpose. 3mo
LapReader As an Australian I don‘t get it either. How many people have to die before the laws are changed? 3mo

This is such a great idea @Cinfhen

I‘m a day late, but here‘s my #WeeklyForcast.
I‘m going to read more in the tagged book. I‘m only 140p into this mammoth
On Friday Lauren on “Lauren and the Books” over on YouTube, is hosting Cozy Reading Night. For some of that time I‘ll either read a comic or the Dumbo book I bought earlier this year. I‘ll see where my moods take my on the day.

Samplergal I‘m taking this as my only book on a week long trip. 😳. I really want to get into this. All other obligations are finished for the month. 3mo
AnneCecilie @Samplergal That sounds like a good idea. Unfortunately I don‘t have that opportunity, and I‘m not sure if I should take small breaks during my read or not. I find it quite intense to read all those pages without punctuation and only commas. 3mo
Cinfhen I‘ve thought about trying this on audio?? Is it out in audio?? It‘s probably well over 40 hours!! Im so on the fence with this book. I‘ll be watching for your #BookReport 3mo

LauraJ Love your Paddington bookmark! 3mo
AnneCecilie @Cinfhen I have no idea if it‘s out on audio. From the reviews it seems like most has read the physical book or an e-book. It definitely has some interesting thoughts so far and I‘m only 150 p in. 3mo
Cinfhen I can‘t find any audio!!! I own the book but im not in the right headspace for it. 3mo
