Billion Dollar Whale
Billion Dollar Whale: The Man Who Fooled Wall Street, Hollywood, and the World | Tom Wright, Bradley Hope
The definitive inside account of the 1MDB scandal, "a true life thriller" (Ben Mezrich) about a "modern Gatsby" who managed to swindle over $5 billion with the aid of Goldman Sachs and others--a "must read" (Booklist) "epic tale" (Publishers Weekly, starred review) that exposes the secret nexus of elite wealth, banking, Hollywood, and politics from two award-winning Wall Street Journal reporters. In 2009, with the dust yet to settle on the financial crisis, a baby-faced, seemingly mild-mannered Wharton grad began setting in motion a fraud of unprecedented gall and magnitude--one that would come to symbolize the next great threat to the global financial system. His name is Jho Low, a man whose behavior was so preposterous he might seem made up. An epic true-tale of hubris and greed, Billion Dollar Whale reveals how this young social climber pulled off one of the biggest heists in history--right under the nose of the global financial industry. Federal agents who helped unravel Bernie Madoff's Ponzi scheme say the 1MDB affair will become the textbook case of financial fraud in the modern age--and its fallout is already being credited for taking down the prime minister of Malaysia. For readers of Liar's Poker, Den of Thieves, and Bad Blood, Billion Dollar Whale will become a classic, harrowing parable about finance run amok.

I‘ve seen this reviewed as “Bad Blood” meets “Crazy Rich Asians” in a bunch of places and it‘s such an apt comparison that I haven‘t got a lot to add. Crimes of finance are a niche interest of mine, and if they tickle you too, this will be sure to hit the spot.

batsy I need to read this one since this specifically involves Malaysia's ruling class and their crimes 😡 1y

I‘ve been on a kick of money embezzlement-type shows (ex. Inventing Anna, Tinder Swindler) and this was on-brand with those but made those examples look like child‘s play…total amateurs. Still amazing to me how people like them can do what they do at the age that they do it! I listened to the audio book and it sounded like a podcast or research paper which isn‘t my favorite but I needed to know the pay off! Pun intended.

I'm shocked this man isn't rotting in prison. I'd love to see the books so i could try to figure out how he did it. He is part of the reason for current banking laws.

This book did a good job explaining how and why the 1MDB fund was created and then used to plunder the country of Malaysia. It‘s also infuriating since so few people suffered any consequences for their participation in the fraud.

Meet my friend Bilqis. We met over 20 years ago. About 5 years ago, she was arrested for dropping balloons on the PM of Malaysia. Fortunately, her father is powerful, & she‘s fine.

The PM was embroiled in a scandal with the MC of this book, Jho Low. Low together with a cadre of ppl globally, conned banks and the Malay ppl out of BILLIONS! This scandal is crazy! It goes from Hollywood filmmaking to sovereign wealth funds. Recommend! 4⭐️ #audiobook

Been listening to this while I pace the house at 4 AM waiting for the dishwasher to finish. I‘m in so many books it‘s ridiculous. Also this tale is ridiculous. This is like the Theranos/Elizabeth Holmes of banking! #24in48

Excellent. A great mix of rigorous research and fascinating story. Jho Low is a fraudster who used the Malaysian PM & Saudi connections to siphon $1bn + . The authors do a great job of telling this clearly, with short chapters (there‘s a mass of info & financial detail they‘ve distilled & made as easy as possible for the reader - lots of convoluted deals!). Parties; Leo Di Caprio appears, but most shocking is the banks‘ role in aiding the crimes.
