Skipping a Beat
Skipping a Beat: A Novel | Sarah Pekkanen
10 posts | 17 read | 4 to read
From the author of the acclaimed The Opposite of Me, a poignant, witty novel about marriage, forgiveness, and the choices that give shapeand limitsto our lives. What would you do if your husband suddenly wanted to rewrite all of the rules of your relationship? This is the question at the heart of Skipping a Beat, Pekkanens thought-provoking second book. From the outside, Julia and Michael seem to have it all. Both products of difficult childhoods in rural West Virginiawhere they were simply Julie and Mikethey become high school sweethearts and fall in love. Shortly after graduation, they flee their small town to start afresh. Now thirty-somethings, they are living a rarified life in their multi-million-dollar, Washington D.C. home. Julia is a highly sought-after party planner, while Michael has just sold his wildly successful flavored water company for $70 million. But one day, Michael collapses in his office. Four minutes and eight seconds after his cardiac arrest, a portable defibrillator jump-starts his heart. But in those lost minutes he becomes a different man. Money is meaningless to himand he wants to give it all away. Julia, who sees bits of her life reflected in scenes from the worlds great operas, is now facing with a choice she never anticipated. Should she should walk away from the man she once adoredbut who truthfully became a stranger to her long before this pronouncementor give in to her husband's pleas for a second chance and a promise of a poorer but happier life? As wry and engaging as her debut, but with quiet depth and newfound maturity, Skipping a Beat is an unforgettable portrait of a marriage whose glamorous surface belies the complications and betrayals beneath.

I mulled it over and eventually decided to skip my #aardvark box this month. I already have one of the books on hold and I‘m curious about Mister Magic but would rather borrow it unless I see amazing reviews rolling in, then I‘ll throw a copy in next month‘s box. If #botm didn‘t take the entire month to ship to me, I would rejoin this month to nab the Kim and the Cañas.

Pickpick

My first pick for #TBRDeckofCards was “bedroom” which meant I had to pick a book on one of my bedroom shelves. I‘ve had this one forever and it was the last Sarah Pekkanen book I needed to read (not including the newer thrillers she co-writes). It was good, especially if you enjoy somewhat predictable “I‘ve fallen out of love then back into love before it‘s too late” sort of stories. It has her signature snarky humor which I do enjoy. 🌟🌟🌟💫

I had my son pick my first #TBRDeckofCards pick and he picked “bedroom” (I have books on shelves and stacked up all over the house so some of my cards specify where I have to pick from). This book has been on my shelves for YEARS so I thought now was as good a time as any to give it a go! And I totally forgot it had a signed bookplate!

Chick lit. Predictable situations, predictable dialogue, predictable ending. Meh. I should have known better than to pick this up.

CouronneDhiver Every once in awhile, a chick lit book surprises me. 5y
Amiable @CouronneDhiver Hope springs eternal --that's why I keep picking them up, too. 5y

Mehso-so

Listened to this while I made some bookmarks. I got half way through the book and realized nothing had happened yet. Still not a very interesting book to follow. In some random places it got sad for no reason while the sad parts weren‘t all that sad. Okay, easy read.

Listening to this on audible while making more bookmarks. I‘m in a love/hate relationship with this narrator. She is the voice of multiple books I listen to. Just ordered a bunch of geodes. I wish I had them now to work on. https://www.etsy.com/listing/570554876/dragonfly-floral-stretch-ribbon-bookmark?...

Well, there it is! I skipped #botm for January - the first skip in my whole membership! I am somewhat interested in Woman in the Window and As Bright As Heaven, but since @Mdargusch and @Reviewsbylola ordered those I can borrow 🤗

With all of the amazing books I already own and need to read for challenges, this seems like the right time to take a break. Anyone else skip this month??

DivineDiana I own soooo many unread books that I can‘t allow myself to join! 6y
AmyG I skipped. Nothing overly thrilled me and I have so much to read already. 6y
2BR02B I couldn't skip this month, because whenever I read a book described as "Handmaid's Tale for a new millennium," I can't seem to empty my pockets quickly enough. 6y

[DELETED] 3803335244 I was going to skip but decided to go with As Bright as Heaven. I really was not feeling the books this month. However, I think I will be canceling my sub next month only because this is my 5th BOTM & I haven‘t read one yet 😱 My tbr pile needs to be tackled before I buy more. 6y

kbuggle Skipping too- own it, no shame! ;) there are so many books I need to catch up on from 2017 before I can get into January releases! 6y
