The Archivist
The Archivist: A Novel | Martha Cooley
8 posts | 9 read | 15 to read
A young woman's impassioned pursuit of a sealed cache of T. S. Eliot's letters lies at the heart of this emotionally charged novel -- a story of marriage and madness, of faith and desire, of jazz-age New York and Europe in the shadow of the Holocaust. The Archivist was a word-of-mouth bestseller and one of the most jubilantly acclaimed first novels of recent years.

Mehso-so

Oh boy, did I ever struggle through this. It seems like the type of book I would like, but nope. There was a lot going on in this novel and some of it I could relate to but the main character was a man with seemingly no emotional connection to anything and I have had enough of those guys. 😀 At least it‘s off my TBR pile.

Omg love at first sight😍 page one made me swoon and it was only uphill from there. Beautifully written, tragic, and gripping.

“In a few minutes I heard the books' voices: a low, steady, unsupressible hum. I'd heard it many times before. I've always had a finely tuned ear for a library's accumulations of echo and desire. Libraries are anything but hushed.”

The very first book club I started seemed to inadvertently end up with themes running through several book club picks. There was a season where we unintentionally read a whole set of books about librarians or libraries. I also read Possession somewhere around that time, and it fits right in. I guess this is really a double book pairing. Or book quadrupling?! #bookpairings #fallintobooks

Texreader Love that! The Historian would be a good one to add to this mix. 7y
BarbaraJean @Texreader Yes! A great fit! I loved The Historian so much... couldn't put it down. 7y

I have SO many books to choose from for #setinalibrary, but I'll go with this one since I haven't seen it mentioned yet! Central to the plot is a sealed cache of T.S. Eliot's letters, not to be read until a date decades in the future. It explores fascinating ideas about public vs. private writings, and what readers should or shouldn't have access to. Pair with a read of Possession by A.S. Byatt... also #setinalibrary. #seasonsreadings2016

mhillis This sounds good📚📚🤓 7y
