Mermaid
Mermaid: A Twist on the Classic Tale | Carolyn Turgeon
16 posts | 20 read | 20 to read
Two sheltered princesses, one wounded warrior; who will live happily ever after? Princess Margrethe has been hidden away while her kingdom is at war. One gloomy, windswept morning as she stands in a convent garden overlooking the icy sea, she witnesses a miracle: a glittering mermaid emerging from the waves, a nearly drowned man in her arms. By the time Margrethe reaches the shore, the mermaid has disappeared into the sea. As Margrethe nurses the handsome stranger back to health, she learns that not only is he a prince, he is also the son of her father's greatest rival. Sure that the mermaid brought this man to her for a reason, Margrethe devises a plan to bring peace to her kingdom. Meanwhile, the mermaid princess Lenia longs to return to the human man she carried to safety. She is willing to trade her home, her voice, and even her health for legs and the chance to win his heart. A surprising take on the classic tale, Mermaid is the story of two women with everything to lose. Beautifully written and compulsively readable, it will make you think twice about the fairytale you heard as a child, keeping you in suspense until the very last page. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Book #4 for the #MermaidMarathonReads Readathon! What an interesting twist on the original. We get to meet the Princess that the Prince was to marry and learn how she felt and how she was involved in the story (at least this author‘s idea of the story). I loved the hopeful ending just as much as The Little Mermaid, maybe more. #100YEARS100BOOKS #87 #BookSpinBingo #10 #BFC21 #1 #TAILSandTALESforADULTS #14 #FAIRYTALECHALLENGE #ThankfulAthon

Cross between Disney and Hans Christian Andersen. So goood! I‘m a big fan of Disney so I always love reading retellings. Also a very quick read, which is nice when you have a large TBR pile 💎⚓️🎼🍤🦀🐠🐙🧜🏻‍♀️🧜🏻‍♀️🧜🏻‍♀️🤩

I'm all about the fairytale retelling but this was a miss. The first half was fairly good but then it took a left turn and it just went downhill for me.

DivineDiana Too bad. 😕 6y
mariaku21 @DivineDiana I almost gave up but I kept going hoping that it would pick up again 🙄 6y

A retelling of the mermaid (aka the little mermaid) I found this dull and nowhere near a perfect twist in the classics tail.

Linsy What a great bag! 💕 6y

It bothers me when the cover art doesn't match the character descriptions- several mermaids and none of them with red hair. But I am liking this spin so far so there that.

This is a small stack of unread ARCs I've managed to hang on to and not pass off to someone else! I'm hoping to get around to them soon. Also, I love the #mugsoflitsy hash tag!

Notafraidofwords Every heart a doorway! I want to read that! 7y

Been wanting to reread this one for a while. Absolutely loved it. I, like so many others, have such mermaid love. This is such a fantastic fairy tale and can't recommend it enough!

#booksetbythesea #septemberphotochallenge My book by the sea (and somewhat in the sea) is actually one of my first retellings. This was a nice little twist on a dark tale. I've read better since bit I really enjoyed it the first time around.

RealLifeReading I've not heard of this book! Sounds interesting! 8y
TheNextBook @RealLifeReading if you like the original version of The Little Mermaid then you will probably really enjoy this. 8y
LauraBrook Love Carolyn Turgeon and have yet to read this one. I feel like my whole being gets poured directly into her books. 8y
TheNextBook @LauraBrook I'll have to find other stuff by her. Can you recommend anything? 8y
LauraBrook @TheNextBook Turns out the only one I've read is Godmother! I'm surprised. But I own everything else she's written based on that book alone, so I k ow I loved it. Looks like I'll have to right this wrong soon! 8y

I usually like retellings, but this was a train wreck, wrapped in a disaster. Everything was so one dimensional and forced. The characters were about as interesting as watching paint dry, and the love triangle was more like watching a socially awkward kid ask for his first dance. 1.5/5.
