I received this book from @Ericalambbrown for the Jolabokaflod swap a while back, and finally found time to read it. I switched between audio and my print copy. Anderson is so very imaginative and wove a unique and touching tale. I found myself tearing up quite a bit. There‘s nothing I love more than a fairy tale with Baba Yaga. It was the pick me up I needed, and I look forward to trying Anderson‘s other books!

Such a fun read with a lot of heart!

As I've mentioned before, Baba Yaga is a favorite of mine. This MG book follows a young girl trying to figure out who she is and where she belongs. Her search takes her through a magical journey with the Yagas as she discovers what being alive truly means.

Thank you @Bookgoil @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Professional_Book_Dragon for this surprise happy in my mailbox this week. It came at the right time! We just buried my guy's abuela at 101 years young that same day.

8yr old and I are about half way through this and I love it so far. Some big themes so far (death, loneliness, friendship, family) and Slavic folklore. Death positivity in this is 🙌

tokorowilliamwallace I think I would have loved being introduced to Slavic folklore at that age. 2y

Another two book day! Coincidentally, both published in 2018!
The House with Chicken Legs - Cute story about Marinka who wants to be a normal girl and not a Yaga destined to guide the dead. ⭐⭐⭐
Listen to the Marriage - a novel consisting of weekly marriage counseling sessions for Steve and Gretchen. I enjoyed the up-close intimacy and focus on the therapeutic process but found the therapist Sandy pretty implausible. ⭐⭐⭐

Reggie So the listen to the marriage book…. There were some concessions made that I don‘t think I would feel comfortable with. Like if I‘m in couples counseling why is the other person allowed to date? But I liked the book overall. 2y
merelybookish @Reggie Yes, I can see that, although I got the argument that they could only get back together if they both chose it and neither one was controlling the other. But the therapist was SUPER directive and some of the things she said were 🚩🚩🚩🚩 like telling him to give her all the 💰in the first session. 2y

I stacked this middle grade novel about Baba Yaga back in 2018. And I'm finally reading it in 2021. 😄

marleed I feel that cover should live next door to 2y
Ruthiella So soon? 🤣 (edited) 2y
BarbaraBB @marleed I thought it was by the same author too, based on its cover! 2y

merelybookish @marleed @BarbaraBB Yes I see the resemblance! Is The House in the Cerulean Sea for kids? I assumed it was based on the cover. 2y
merelybookish @Ruthiella @erzascarletbookgasm Exactly! 😄 Three years isn't so bad in the grand scheme. I have stacked books I probably will never get to. 2y
marleed @merelybookish No, Cerulean Sea is a feel good book for adults. However, if one‘s mind is open to love is love it‘s a beautiful book to share with a child. In fact I recommended it to my friend, a 4th grade teacher. I told her the rec was for her but truly wished it could be for her classroom - I‘m sure there would be some parents who disagree with me. 2y
BarbaraBB I have no idea! 2y

I put together a round up of great middle grade fairy tale retellings over on Book Riot:

bookriot.com/middle-grade-fairy-tale-retellings/

LibrarianRyan yeah. Didn't realize you were over there! Good for you. 2y
rachelsbrittain @LibrarianRyan thanks! Yeah, I've been working there for about 4 years now and love it just as much as when I first started. 2y
LibrarianRyan @rachelsbrittain that‘s great. I must have slept through that. I just tried to read every books (that I hadn‘t already read) from the list of kids books that wouldn‘t be published now. That was fun. 2y

An adorable middle grade fantasy inspired Russian fairy tales about Baba Yaga. Marinka dreams of making a normal friend but everyone she meets beside her grandmother is dead. That's because her baba is a Yaga, someone entrusted with helping the dead pass over, ferried around by a magical house on chicken legs. A fun story full of magic that deals with death & death acceptance and learning to be a little kinder and more grateful for what you have.

Wow wow wow I loved this book so much. Based on the tale of Baba Yaga this story will transport you to so many dreamlike places. It follows the journey of a girl who desperately wants to break free from her destiny of guiding the dead to the afterlife so she can experience what it means to be ‘living‘. By the end I was fully on board with the idea of houses having chicken legs... 😂. Such a beautiful book! ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

#bookreport

My work is not closed yet, so I have been stressed this week. As a result I read The House with Chicken Legs, listened to A Boy and His Dog at the End of the World, and then read 5 volumes of Lumberjanes.

I very rarely read middle-grade novels so I had to remind myself that this is from the point of view and intended for twelve year olds but overall, I really enjoyed this retelling of the Baba Yaga folklore.

Weaponxgirl The artwork on the cover is lovely 5y

This was my book inspired by mythology or folklore for the #popsugarreadingchallenge and I really enjoyed it. The main character grated on me a bit, but i think maybe that‘s just because I don‘t read a lot of middle grade, and I don‘t interact with kids much. I want a Yaga now!!

Flabbergasted 😮 received this book today. “UNCORRECTED PROOF NOT FOR SALE” on its front cover. No where in the description before I bought it said t was this. All it said was “Like New Condition “ $10.20 paperback. 😳😭Anyone ever had this happen through Thriftbooks ?? I just contacted Thriftbooks customer service. Usually they are GREAT when they send the book(s) I order.

Crazeedi I've gotten proofs like this before when ordering used books, they dont say it on description necessarily , I get mine mostly from Amazon and yes when they are outside sellers this has happened 5y
Emily92Bibliophile @Crazeedi that‘s awful! So should I just ask for a return label and a refund? Or is it a lost cause since it‘s an outside seller? Now I am worried my other book I bought is the same ( shipped from somewhere different though ) and I just wasted $16. I have Amazon Prime- would you suggest just to stick with AP ? 5y
ManyWordsLater I always think proofs are such treasures since they‘re not supposed to be sold. It‘s good luck! (edited) 5y

LibrarianRyan Whoaaaaa. Thrift books as a book seller should not be profiting from this. If it‘s a 3rs party seller that is one thing, but they are a major book seller. Especially to charge over $10. 5y
LeahBergen Complain to the book seller first as they may just refund your money. If they don‘t, take it up with ThriftBooks themselves. I ALWAYS argue if it‘s blatant misrepresentation of a product (even when it‘s less than $10, as it annoys me SO much 😆). 5y
Crazeedi @Emily92Bibliophile maybe youd want to if you want the real book. 5y
Crazeedi @Emily92Bibliophile see above comments too , it's how you feel 5y
Emily92Bibliophile @Crazeedi @ManyWordsLater @LibrarianRyan @LeahBergen I just received an email fromThriftbooks and they are issuing me a full refund. ($10) They don‘t have a book to replace it at this time so just the refund. No mention on their part in the issue of it being a Proof.🙄TB person recommended donating it somewhere.😑I‘m probably just going to go through Amazon now for online ordering - I‘m not a fan of them being ok with making a profit from Proofs. (edited) 5y
Crazeedi @Emily92Bibliophile glad they resolved for you! But they should probably not be selling proofs or ARCs 5y
Emily92Bibliophile @Crazeedi I agree. ARCs are not supposed to be sold and she didn‘t say any apology about that issue or that they will not sell them anymore. It was more of “ we are sorry you were dissatisfied with your purchase and will refund you”. 😑 only “ there is no need to send what we sent you in error” so HOPEFULLY that means no more ARCs? (edited) 5y
Crazeedi @Emily92Bibliophile well hopefully right? 5y

This was rather sweet! Fell in love with the cover from seeing it on Instagram 😂 luckily the library had it and I devoured it in no time. I love reading tales based on old fairytales and mythology- and this is certainly a new take on Baba Yaga.
