European Travel for the Monstrous Gentlewoman
European Travel for the Monstrous Gentlewoman | Theodora Goss
In the sequel to the critically acclaimed The Strange Case of the Alchemists Daughter, Mary Jekyll and the rest of the daughters of literatures mad scientists embark on a madcap adventure across Europe to rescue another monstrous girl and stop the Alchemical Societys nefarious plans once and for all. Mary Jekylls life has been peaceful since she helped Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson solve the Whitechapel Murders. Beatrice Rappaccini, Catherine Moreau, Justine Frankenstein, and Marys sister Diana Hyde have settled into the Jekyll household in London, and although they sometimes quarrel, the members of the Athena Club get along as well as any five young women with very different personalities. At least they can always rely on Mrs. Poole. But when Mary receives a telegram that Lucinda Van Helsing has been kidnapped, the Athena Club must travel to the Austro-Hungarian Empire to rescue yet another young woman who has been subjected to horrific experimentation. Where is Lucinda, and what has Professor Van Helsing been doing to his daughter? Can Mary, Diana, Beatrice, and Justine reach her in time? Racing against the clock to save Lucinda from certain doom, the Athena Club embarks on a madcap journey across Europe. From Paris to Vienna to Budapest, Mary and her friends must make new allies, face old enemies, and finally confront the fearsome, secretive Alchemical Society. Its time for these monstrous gentlewomen to overcome the past and create their own destinies.

This is the second book in the series and I enjoyed it a lot. Many interesting characters and a great story, it's a long book, over 700 pages but I was hooked. Already got the final book to read.

Finally starting the second installment of this trilogy! I loved The Strange Case of the Alchemist's Daughter a few years back, but seeing 700+ pages just makes me so nervous ? I'm trying to get over my fear of "big books," and it's time to stop putting this off!

Lucy_Anywhere I have this lurking on my Kindle and have been putting it off for exactly the same reason! 3y
Scochrane26 It‘s one of those books that doesn‘t seem as long as it is. That‘s how I felt anyway. It went quickly. 3y

This is a continuation of #theextraordinaryadventuresoftheathenaclub . A good detective story that also features monsters, mysticism, and characters from typical English novels. The book has a lot of humor, funny comments-inserts of characters that dilute the narrative. The book is very voluminous, but easy to read and quickly addictive.

This was a reread. And it annoyd me so much more the second time. I think this could be summerized with "Mary had no idea what was happening." I don't know what happened between the first book and this, but apparently it contained a fairly succesful lobotomy for most of the main cast, especially Mary.

Sheesh ?

Just finished the second instalment of the Athena Club! As with the first book it was filled with strong female personalities and there were a few new faces this time round too. I love the commentary from the main characters, I feel somehow closer to them for it. Can‘t wait for the next adventure!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A sort of female League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: the members of the Athena Club must race across Europe to stop the nefarious plans of the Société des Alchimistes, with the help and hindrance of other famous fictional characters. Very different from my usual kind of read, I enjoyed the familiarity of the names and the story was fun. Thank you @ulrichyumiodd for this book.

While I still enjoyed the book, I didn't like it as much as the first one. It dragged a bit and could have been shorter than its 700 pages. Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to the third and last book in the series.

Such fun! And the writing on this second novel in the series was true Goss, and worthy of her rep.

Joining the “monstrous gentlewomen” on this new adventure are Irene Adler and a full cast of Van Helsingborg vampires, including Dracula himself.

Setting up the next book, we learn at the end that Alice (the scullery maid) is actually Lydia Raymond (read Great God Pan) who has been captured by ... Prof. Moriarty. Can‘t wait!

I love these main characters, and will very likely read #3, but this sequel was very inferior to the first. Sherlock Holmes continues to be superfluous. He spends most of this book missing, but the author throws in a dozen borrowed and new characters who add zilch. It‘s sooooo repetitive that each chapter reads like a new book! The plotting stinks, and the finale is flat. Only my love of Mary-Cat-Bea-Diana-Justine saves it from a pan. #fantasy

What a fun romp! The Athena Club series is brain candy (I fell through this 700 page book in three days) but brain candy with delicious references throughout, both to Romantic and Victorian literature and some real world events. I liked this, although I liked the more involved nature of the plot and antagonists less than the first one. Looking forward to # 3 this fall. More commentary with spoilers in comments.

annamatopoetry I very much appreciated that Carmilla and Laura got to be Actual Lesbians; if they hadn't, I probably would have quit the book. 5y

Everything is very brown today due to a lack of jam tarts (in the coffee shop; they were present in the book!) I forgot how much faster fiction is to read, this one is 700 pages but I'm more than a quarter through in two sittings. And there may be an István in this book, since it promises Hungary! I suppose that only makes sense if you have read more than a handful of Goss' short stories.

jillrhudy It‘s crazy! Every time someone butters a roll you have to know about it, and the author thinks that every 15th page I forget that Cat is a puma. Did Goss fire her editor? Did they make her write 100 extra pages about nothing? 5y

Loved the 2nd book in this trilogy. Excited about the 3rd but sure I‘ll have a long wait at the library.
The author brings in some relevant themes (and a funny part about mansplaining), including this quote:
“But you‘re as bad as the Londoners who told me to go back to India, that my kind weren‘t wanted here.”
I was a little annoyed by at least 7 typos. And I thought the action towards the end could have been bigger, after all the build-up.

This book was... long. Perhaps longer than it needed to be, BUT I still liked it and am looking forward to reading the 3rd book when it comes out.
Goss has an extensive knowledge of early science fiction and noteworthy people of the Victorian era. She weaves both literary characters and historical figures into her book. I found myself frequently checking Wikipedia to see where she was drawing from. She is thorough. It‘s a fun series!

Overall I liked this book, BUT...It‘s 700 pages because it gets bogged down with stuff like this- an entire page that basically says, “Mary woke up, washed her face, and got dressed. Then she went downstairs for breakfast where she noticed some of her companions were wearing pants.”

Every meal, train car, parlor, and teacup is described in GREAT detail in this book.

Be forewarned
