The Rithmatist
The Rithmatist | Brandon Sanderson
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson: his debut novel for the young adult audienceMore than anything, Joel wants to be a Rithmatist. Chosen by the Master in a mysterious inception ceremony, Rithmatists have the power to infuse life into two-dimensional figures known as Chalklings. Rithmatists are humanity's only defense against the Wild Chalklings--merciless creatures that leave mangled corpses in their wake. Having nearly overrun the territory of Nebrask, the Wild Chalklings now threaten all of the American Isles. As the son of a lowly chalkmaker at Armedius Academy, Joel can only watch as Rithmatist students study the magical art that he would do anything to practice. Then students start disappearing--kidnapped from their rooms at night, leaving trails of blood. Assigned to help the professor who is investigating the crimes, Joel and his friend Melody find themselves on the trail of an unexpected discovery--one that will change Rithmatics--and their world--forever.Bestselling author Brandon Sanderson brings his unique brand of epic storytelling to the teen audience with an engrossing tale of danger and suspense--the first of a series. With his trademark skills in world-building, Sanderson has created a magic system that is so inventive and detailed that that readers who appreciate games of strategy and tactics just may want to bring Rithmatics to life in our world. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, even though it seems to be targeted at a younger audience than Sanderson's cosmere stuff. I was so intrigued by the magic system and the bits of lore we got, but my goodness did I wish there was a sequel! With the ending the way it was, I really hope we get more of the Rithmatist world soon.

First book down for #AwesomeApril 🥳 One of my favourite things about Brandon Sanderson is the original and meticulously thought-out magic systems he comes up with which have clearly defined rules that even the protagonist can‘t break. I loved the Rithmatic magic system 😘 but sadly it was the only thing I loved in this book. It wasn‘t that it was bad, just a bit meh and lacking the usual Sanderson depth of character and world building. @Andrew65

Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 2y

A day late to the party but the timing of the #awesomeapril #readathon is absolutely perfect! I have two weeks off with no plans 📚 bring on the books! My goals are to finish off the tagged, finish at least one of my Libby holds, and my #doublespin book, Magic For Liars. @Andrew65

Andrew65 Good luck 😊👍 2y

I really enjoyed this book!!!
The world-building is so interesting and intricate, and I really enjoyed the characters as well.
I won‘t give any spoilers, but I will say there are a LOT of reveals which makes for a really good plot.
I definitely enjoyed this book and I can‘t really see anything I don‘t like about it. 10/10.

A steampunk world where magic is done with geometrical figures. You either are a Rithmatist – have the ability – or not. Joel is not, but he has a passion for the art and science of the craft. When young Rithmatists in training begin disappearing from the Academy, Joel feels driven to investigate, no matter the danger to himself.

Rithmatists have the power to bring chalk drawings to life, but unfortunately for Joel, he is not a rithmatist. However, when the rithmatist students at his school begin to go missing, Joel takes it upon himself to help solve the case.
This was such a beautiful book. I loved all the characters and the world was just beautiful. I highly recommend it.

My #steampunk pick for a late #seasonsreadings2016 post! This features an ingenious form of magic, set in a steampunk world that I want to explore further. It was the first book I read by Brandon Sanderson, and now I get what all the fuss is about. I just wish he'd finish the next one in the series!

RanaElizabeth I loved this book! It was so original. 7y
brandymuses Waiting for this sequel has been ridiculous. I want it. 7y
BarbaraJean @brandymuses Seriously! He's such a prolific writer, too... I feel like it can't be THAT hard to squeeze in a YA sequel between 1000-page epics... 😏 7y

Most of my books #setinaschool are at my parents, but not The Rithmatist.

Joel wants to be a Rithmatist, bringing chalk to life and defend against the wild chalklings. But at the ceremony of the Armedius Academy he wasn't chosen and is now doomed to a normal students life. But then Rithmatist students start disappearing.
I loved this one because of the strange magic systen. It reminded me a bit of the Fullmetal Alchemist manga series 📚😀

Duobond I have been meaning to read one of Sanderson's novels for a long time, but I have no idea where to start. XD I was thinking of reading Elantris first, but not sure if it is good or not. 8y
DuckOfDoom @Duobond I started with the original Mistborn trilogy and I think it would be a good place to start. 8y
Duobond @DuckOfDoom I keep hearing about that trilogy. So, I will give it a chance. Thanks for the suggestion 8y

This YA fantasy novel involves a group of people called "rithmatists" whose 2-D chalk drawings come to life. Part fantasy, part murder mystery, entirely enjoyable.
