Love, Life, and Elephants
Love, Life, and Elephants: An African Love Story | Daphne Sheldrick
10 posts | 8 read | 16 to read
Daphne Sheldrick, whose family arrived in Africa from Scotland in the 1820s, is the first person ever to have successfully hand-reared newborn elephants. Her deep empathy and understanding, her years of observing Kenya's rich variety of wildlife, and her pioneering work in perfecting the right husbandry and milk formula have saved countless elephants, rhinos, and other baby animals from certain death. In this heartwarming and poignant memoir, Daphne shares her amazing relationships with a host of orphans, including her first love, Bushy, a liquid-eyed antelope; Rickey-Tickey-Tavey, the little dwarf mongoose; Gregory Peck, the busy buffalo weaver bird; Huppety, the mischievous zebra; and the majestic elephant Eleanor, with whom Daphne has shared more than forty years of great friendship. But this is also a magical and heartbreaking human love story between Daphne and David Sheldrick, the famous Tsavo Park warden. It was their deep and passionate love, David's extraordinary insight into all aspects of nature, and the tragedy of his early death that inspired Daphne's vast array of achievements, most notably the founding of the world-renowned David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and the Orphans' Nursery in Nairobi National Park, where Daphne continues to live and work to this day. Encompassing not only David and Daphne's tireless campaign for an end to poaching and for conserving Kenya's wildlife, but also their ability to engage with the human side of animals and their rearing of the orphans expressly so they can return to the wild, Love, Life, and Elephants is alive with compassion and humor, providing a rare insight into the life of one of the world's most remarkable women.

Daphne Sheldrick started the David Sheldrick Foundation when David passed away. The foundation helps elephant and rhino orphans in Kenya. They will be introduced back into the wild when they are ready. Amazing place, amazing people. I read the book a couple of years ago.

Ruthiella Great picture! ❤️🐘 6mo

The late Dame Daphne Sheldrick and the volunteer Keepers at The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust have been a #rayoflight to many orphaned elephants. ❤️🐘❤️

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Love this organization! My bf and I foster an elephant (Enkesha, if you follow them on the Gram) and even went to Kenya to visit her. 💖🐘 4y
SconsinBookyBadger @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego you bet I follow them on IG! I haven‘t taken steps to foster yet. I can‘t decide which because they‘re all so cute no matter their age level. I‘d definitely pick a male and female pair whenever I get to that day. ❤️🐘 (edited) 4y

My BF fostered me a baby elephant from The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, and we got to meet her while in Nairobi, Kenya. Littens please meet Enkesha! 😍🐘💕 I'm still in the middle of reading the bio of the recently departed Dame Daphne Sheldrick, who's late husband the Trust was created in honor of. (Please excuse the grammar, I'm still on holiday 😄)

VeganCleopatra I'd really love to hear more about your visit here! How did it work? How much time did you get etc.? 6y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @VeganCleopatra So they do a public viewing once a day, and that lasts an hour. It was really busy, I'd say there was close to 500 ppl there when we went. But that was a Sunday, and getting into high season... 6y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @VeganCleopatra if you're a foster parent you book and go back in the evening when they come home to go to bed. Even that was busy, there were probably 100 ppl for that. Cuz they also let prospective foster parents go to that as well. So it wasn't as intimate & private as I thought it would be, but we still got some quality time with her. That lasts an hour as well. 6y
VeganCleopatra I'm surprised it was so busy. I'm both alarmed and comforted by that. Same as I would love to visit but also feel like people shouldn't be able to visit for the elephants' safety etc. I just keep thinking about the rhino sanctuary that was attacked. 😞 What is the quality time like? Do you actually interact with the elephant? Is it in their pen that this happens? I wonder if they break up the hour if you foster more than one? 6y
VeganCleopatra Sorry for all the questions, I'm just so curious. Oh, did you meet the keepers? I love those guys. 6y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @VeganCleopatra So the 'private' time you get when you foster was different than I expected. It wasn't very private or intimate. You show up at 5 (with 100 other ppl) and they bring you in to line up, so you can watch all the ellies run by as they head in for bed. Then you can follow then in and wander around as you like. The pens have their names so you can find yours. You can spend all your time with one or visit them all. 6y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @VeganCleopatra the keepers are with their respective elephants, so you do meet them. We tried to ask Enkasha's some questions, but he didn't seem to speak English very well. 6y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @VeganCleopatra we just hung out with Enkesha, and were able to pet her. But she's in her pen, and your just looking in. 6y

My #litsyavatar is of an adorable elephant at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya. They rescue orphaned elephants (due to poaching and drought mostly), in addition to rhinos and other species. They also do anti-poaching work, which is sadly desperately needed these days. They are my favorite charity and do wonderful work. If you are interested in donating please visit them at https://www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/

Christine11 So adorable! 🐘 6y
dariazeoli I love this org! I sponsored Kiko the giraffe last year 6y
VeganCleopatra @dariazeoli awesome! I can't resist adopting those adorable baby elephants every year. 6y

Chelleo What‘s not to love about an elephant avatar! 6y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego 💕💕💕 I'm going to visit my foster elephant Enkesha in July 😊🐘 Such a great cause/org. I have the tagged book and can't wait to read it. 6y
VeganCleopatra @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego 😍 so jealous! Is that the reason for you going to Kenya? I always make sure to adopt at least two of these guys a year, the organization is incredible. The book was a bit of a disappointment for me when I read it years ago (so I can't remember specifics), but I hope you like it. 6y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego We were already going to Kenya and going to visit DSWT, so my BF surprised with our foster "daughter". ? That's too bad about the book, I still want to read it before we get there. 6y
VeganCleopatra @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Are you doing a safari type trip? Since I'll never get there, I'll love vicariously through you. Haha Please say hello to Maisha and Emoli for me, they're my current adoptions. Who am I kidding, hug them all for me! 😉 Will they even let you hug them? 🤔 For their safety I'd like to think not but at the and time I want to hug them? Haha 6y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego It's an overlanding trip, lots of camping and animals! It more low budget. We get to visit them during public viewing time in the afternoon. I don't imagine we're allowed to interact, but I could be wrong. BUT as foster parents we get a private visit with Enkesha in the evening. So I hope we get to hug her then!! 🤗🐘 6y
VeganCleopatra A private visit?! I hadn't read that before. Is that for just a regular foster or a specific donation price? (Some charities work that way.) Officially absolutely jealous haha 6y

Pickpick

For an animal lover who has no interest in traveling to Africa, this book was a treat. Dame Daphne was/is essential to helping elephant and rhino populations. Her adventures in raising animal orphans is inspiring.

MrBook Sounds interesting! 8y

Starting a new read before bed, hope it's good!

...not too good, though, I have class in the morning and I need sleep.
