The Long Haul: A Trucker's Tales of Life on the Road
The Long Haul: A Trucker's Tales of Life on the Road | Finn Murphy
19 posts | 23 read | 30 to read
A long-haul movers rollicking account of life out on the Big Slab. More than thirty years ago, Finn Murphy dropped out of college to become a long-haul trucker. Since then hes covered more than a million miles packing, loading, and hauling peoples belongings all over America. Known by his trucker handle as U-Turn, he spends his days (and many of his nights) in a 53-foot eighteen-wheeler he calls Cassidy. In The Long Haul, Murphy offers a truckers-eye view of America on the move. Going far beyond the myth of the American road trip, he whisks readers down the I-95 Powerlane, across the Florida Everglades, in and out of the truck stops of the Midwest, and through the steep grades of the Rocky Mountains. As he crisscrosses the country, Murphy recounts with wit, candor, and charm the America he has seen change over the decades, from the hollowing-out of small towns to changing tastes in culture and home furnishings. Some 40 million Americans move each year, and very few have any idea what theyre getting into or the kind of person to whom they are relinquishing their worldly goods. The Long Haul is also a behind-the-scenes look at the moving industry, revealing what really happens when we call in the movers. Through it all, Murphy tells poignant, funny, and often haunting stories of the people he encounters on the job: a feisty hoarder in New Hampshire; a Virginia homeowner raging when Murphys truck accidentally runs down a stand of trees; an ex-banker in Colorado who treats Finn and his crew with undisguised contempt; a widow who needs Murphy to bring her archeologist husbands remains and relics to a Navajo burial ceremony in New Mexico. These experiences inspire Finns memorable reflections on work, class, and the bonds we form with the things we own and the places we live. Brimming with personality and filled with great characters, The Long Haul is a resonant portrait of the enduring appeal of manual labor in the dark underbelly of the American Dream.

You never know what you‘ll come across when you‘re out on the road! These dogs weren‘t menacing but I wasn‘t taking any chances as I was outnumbered. I enjoyed this breezy, poignant memoir by a fellow driver. Recap: truckers work incredibly long, hard hours; they have mad skills; they deal with a lot of bullshit; they see beyond the myths of their personas and the country as a whole ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Tamra Cute though! 1y
Soubhiville Looks like possibly a pack of German Wirehair Pointers? Someone out hunting? I hope they found their way home ok. 1y

“I‘m dispatching a couple of guys from fucking Saskatchewan and they talk like the Dukes of Hazzard.” 😂 Thoroughly enjoyed this and would recommend it if a memoir about long-haul trucking appeals to you like it did me.

JSW Sold. I love memoirs like this! 6y

There is/was an audiobook counter in some truck stops? Fascinating! (Oh and Dr Colas is his term for a 1/2 Coke 1/2 Dr Pepper soda).

Soubhiville Yep, you can also get audiobooks at Cracker Barrel if you need one while you‘re traveling. I believe they will buy them back from you when you finish them. 6y
bookwrm526 Many Flying J truck stops have an audiobook section, and sometimes they are super cheap 6y
Smrloomis @Soubhiville Cracker Barrel?! I had no idea. @bookwrm526 Interesting, I would never have thought about it, but it makes sense. Thanks for posting that. 6y
Smrloomis Although I must say that $40 USD is really pretty steep, even if that book is really long (which I remember it being). 6y

Husband heard an interview with the author on NPR and picked this up at the library. Memoirs are kinda my thing, and even though trucking isn‘t, I love to read about people and their lives from their own perspective. Finn took a 10 year break from driving that wasn‘t explained in the book. It was in the interview and I‘m disappointed that he didn‘t choose to include the reason...it would really have added more dimension (and honesty). 3/5⭐️ 🚚📦🚚

RadicalReader @Wife what‘s your favorite memoir you‘ve read? Be sure to check out My Brother‘s Voice by Stephen Nasser and I‘ll See You Again by Jackie Hance (edited) 6y
Wife @radicalreader I‘d have to say my favorite is A Long Way Gone by Ismael Beah (the audiobook is done wonderfully). I also like Wild by Strayed and of course The Glass Castle. I will definitely check out your recommendations. Thank you🌹 6y
readinginthedark Interesting! My father-in-law is a trucker; should be fascinating to compare his stories with this! 6y

A veteran bedbugger shares stories from the roads of the U.S. Laced with trucker tidbits (know which states have the best public radio or the difference between a chicken choker & a reefer or which city is known as Shakeytown?), humorous & sentimental anecdotes, and perceptive analysis on themes related to race, class, & the American experience. Love a memoir where I laugh, I learn, & I‘m challenged to consider a different perspective. Recommend!

I have always thought being a trucker would be intriguing. I guess I‘ll live vicariously through Murphy‘s book. 😎

Quasifesto Growing up, my favorite uncle was a long haul trucker. Everyone called him Cannonball. I thought he was the coolest. As an adult, I was disappointed to learn that his actual name was Doyle. 6y
peacegypsy @Quasifesto That‘s a great story, and perfectly in keeping with the trucker mystique. I hope you still think of him as Cannonball. 😊 6y

I‘m on the road for a couple days. But these guys! Whew! They‘re on the road a lot! Looking forward to finishing this memoir when I get home. So far it‘s been a humorous and interesting peek into trucker culture.

This will be my #nonfiction pick for January challenge. I just finished a heavy read, so this should be a nice cleanser. I travel a lot by car for my job, and I always joke that I should be a trucker. 🤗

I enjoyed this peek into the life of a moving truck driver. (Extra interesting to me bc I‘ve experienced many military relocations with professional movers.) While the tone felt a bit blustery at times, the anecdotes shared were thoughtfully selected, funny, and well-written. Many insights about customer/service provider interaction (and a few about race/white privilege/class, too). Love that many truckers are way into audiobooks - makes sense!

This is my first of 2 book hauls that I got today. This is from my first thrift shop that I went to. The sticker tags are going to come off, once I blow-dry them. All accounted for $12.90. #thrift #bookhaul

Jess7 You got some good ones! Have you read them all? If not, you're in for a treat! I loved, loved, LOVED The Kite Runner. The others are good too - I enjoyed The Book Thief and the Hunger Games series was good too! 7y
TheRiehlDeal @Jess7 I haven't read the Kite Runner or The Things They Carried, but I've read them all, except Mockingjay, which I still need to finish. All in all, I was impressed with how many good books they had. 7y
Jess7 Yeah - you have a good haul there! I haven't read The Things They Carried, but I highly recommend The Kite Runner! I'm excited for you to read it! If you participate in photo challenges, I've created one for September. It's posted on my page so check it out but The Kite Runner would be an excellent one for Day 28: green with envy 🤗 7y
britt_brooke The Things They Carried is so good! 7y
TheRiehlDeal @britt_brooke Yeah, my senior English class in high school had to read snippets of The Things They Carried and then analyze what we read. I really enjoyed the snippets of this book. 7y

My new tiny foster kitty. He was rescued from a drainage pipe. I don't know if he's ever had cat food before. Took all day to convince him to try the food and now he won't stop eating. He needs a name. "Cecil" is currently the front runner. #catsoflitsy

I really enjoyed listening to two hours of this on the way home from my sister's. I think I might finally be getting the hang of listening to audio books.

This book reminded me of Hillbilly Elegy in the sense of it being a sociological study but with the lens of a memoir. It combines trucking history, personal stories, and industry information, touches on some modern issues like sprawl and racism and our accumulation of cheap stuff, and overall, is just a good book. Even if you don't have truckers in your family, it makes for a fascinating read.

Unvarnished in tone and content. Funny and clear eyed, especially about race and class. A homage to hard work and a snapshot of a trade that is on its way out. This memoir is for fans of Chronology of Water and Love and Terror on the Howling Plains. It's really a phenomenal book, a reading experience that is, for example, the complete opposite of sitting alone in a dark room with a bird.
