How to Be a Victorian: A Dawn-To-Dusk Guide to Victorian Life
How to Be a Victorian: A Dawn-To-Dusk Guide to Victorian Life | Ruth Goodman
Lauded by critics, How to Be a Victorian is an enchanting manual for the insatiably curious, the the cheapest time-travel machine you ll find (NPR). Readers have fallen in love with Ruth Goodman, an historian who believes in getting her hands dirty. Drawing on her own firsthand adventures living in re-created Victorian conditions, Goodman serves as our bustling guide to nineteenth-century life. Proceeding from daybreak to bedtime, this charming, illustrative work imagines the Victorians as intrepid survivors (New Republic) of the most perennially fascinating era of British history. From lacing into a corset after a round of calisthenics to slipping opium to the little ones, Goodman s account of Victorian life makes you feel as if you could pass as a native (The New Yorker)."

Written with humour, this takes you through a day in the life of a Victorian, from getting up to going to bed and everything in between.
Lots of fun as well as educational it was never boring or dry. I enjoyed this from start to finish

I don‘t think I would do very well in the Victorian times. This is an interesting article.

A really interesting, informative and accessible guide to how ordinary Victorians lived, each chapter taking you through an ordinary working day from the first (often freezing) step out of bed to when the lights go out.

I've seen Goodman on her television shows which are lovely, but her books are even better. If the shows aren't your cup of tea, she really is a talented and engaging writer, so I'd push you in that direction.

I don't often read ebooks, but without my usual reading venues available, this will have to be the way in 2021. It was... alright, I guess, & like a good historian, Goodman doesn't pass judgment. Unfortunately, the Victorian is the one era that most deserve judgment; people were fucking psychopaths. Obviously not everyone, but it's always nice to read a book and learn that shit was even worse than you previously knew. I can elaborate if you want.

STORYBOOK-CAFE I have a feeling the Victorian would think "we" were the psychopaths. 3y
annamatopoetry @Milara I love social history too, I just fucking hate the Victorians (to be fair, I did so even before I read this, from the damage they did to the history of earlier periods, the many genocides of the British empire etc). but like, there's a reasons Ricket's is known as "the English condition" in scandinavia. Being poor in 1800s Britain would, I would expect, be one of the most unpleasant times and places to be in human history. 3y
annamatopoetry @STORYBOOK-CAFE look, I will 100% have this fight if I have to, the Victorian era is definitely among the worst (not beating the 1600s, but like, up there) 3y

annamatopoetry Actually wait, I missed one of the major downsides to this book: the stuff Goodman is just wrong about. Predictably , it's not they historical stuff but the modern; her understanding of makeup is stuck in the early 80s and her methodology for coping with a corset would make my physical therapist cry. 3y
STORYBOOK-CAFE @annamatopoetry We are now a society who marches in the street to fight for the right to kill our own young. Calling it empowerment. Victorians have nothing on us. 3y
annamatopoetry @Milara fair, in the latter third of the era, things are starting to improve. 3y
annamatopoetry @STORYBOOK-CAFE my dude are anti abortion? omg, yes PLEASE go back to the Victorian era where you fucking belong you fucking little asshole 3y
STORYBOOK-CAFE @annamatopoetry I'm not a dude. 3y
annamatopoetry @STORYBOOK-CAFE you're an honorary dude now. also, I told you to fuck off. 3y
STORYBOOK-CAFE @annamatopoetry That makes zero sense. 3y

This book was really enlightening. I love 19th century British literature so this was right up my alley. It really goes into the darker side of the Victorian era which kind of ruins the luster of my favorite books but also makes me want to go back and read again with all this new information about Victorian life! My only complaint is the author‘s personal quips about living on a Victorian farm and her perspective. Didn‘t need it, I think.

This non-fiction book takes one through a victorian day, from describing the clothes they donned after waking up, the soap they used, the food they ate, the work they did. While I knew a lot before, it was different to have the facts brought together in such an organized way. I found it very interesting and enjoyable.

A truly delightful book just stuffed with all sorts of delicious Victorian details and facts! Ruth Goodman makes it so easy to read and has truly done her homework and is so knowledgable. On top of that, her personal anecdotes about living a Victorian lifestyle were humorous and totally riveting! Such an excellent book!

I am so happy I stumbled across this gem in the Amazon "suggestions" section. As a researcher in literature, I often get lost in the middle/upper class understanding of Victorian life as presented to me in the novels I read. This work brings to light the majority of the Victorian population (working class) and depicts their daily life, giving an intimate feel of their constant struggle to survive and their endless endurance through it all. ♡

charl08 Sounds good. I enjoyed Stedman Jones on Outcast London, will add this to the pile. 7y

FINALLY finished this.It took me nearly a month-a very long time for me, especially given its size-480 pages but broken up with photo plates, illustrations and white space. There was something about the author's style I didn't love-although conversational and narrative, it was somehow dry at the same time. All that said, I thought it was an excellent read about this period and full of great info.I immediately downloaded her newest,How to be a Tudor.
