Last night, I finished this book and concluded a fairly Jonathan-tastic week (because I also read Everything is Illuminated for book club). It took me a little while to get into it, but I wound up enjoying it a lot in the end...and there's no doubt that Lethem knows how to write memorable characters.

It's Mothers Day! I'm celebrating the pub date of this wonderful book by rockin' my sweet, sweet tote bag (thanks, Riverhead!) and telling everyone I know that they have to read it.

Hag-Seed | Margaret Atwood

Pickpick

Love me some Hogarth Shakespeare, and the latest entry in the series - Margaret Atwood's retelling of The Tempest - might just be my favorite of the bunch. Atwood's setup, in which Prospero is a director who stages a production of The Tempest as a means of exacting revenge, allows readers to consider the play on multiple levels, and the result is fantastic in every sense of the word. So great!

This is a crazy-good week for new releases (ahhhh, yet another reason I love fall) and Derek Palacio's debut novel is one of many great ones out this week. If you love a richly-textured family saga, make room for this on your shelf!

Closing out #bannedbooksweek with one of my favorite books of all time, plus a favorite read-aloud from my childhood. Big props to @klwestenberg , who came up with the idea for this photo series! 😄📚

RebeccaRenner I definitely read The Things They Carried aloud to my senior English class last year. Yay swearing! 7y

Oh, this was just beautiful. Whether describing the Texas landscape or the workings of the human mind or heart, Paulette Jiles has a masterful way with words, and the story she's told here is one I'll remember for a long time. This book absolutely deserves its spot on the #nbalonglist.

Unsurprisingly, it's been a great few weeks for new YA books! We loved this book and the Female of the Species...and so far, I'm really liking Three Dark Crowns, too 😍

I thought this was pretty terrific...Frangello manages to develop a large cast of characters and write their actions in a way that feels emotionally honest and really original. And she's a local author to boot! 😄 #localfirst

My Sunshine Away | M. O. Walsh

This was one of my favorite books of 2015, and earlier this year, we were lucky enough to host M.O. Walsh for the paperback release (he's just as delightful as the book!). I still recommend it all the time, and I have yet to hear from anyone who didn't like it. Lots of love for this one! #FunFridayPhoto

CaptainMatt This was such a great book! Also one of my 2015 favorites. He even sang at the reading where I got the book! 7y

Here they are. Large and in charge and signed by JSF himself. A little more than halfway through, I have mixed feelings about the book...I'm finding each and every one of these characters detestable, and yet I'm fascinated and feel compelled to keep reading about them!

Commonwealth | Ann Patchett
post image
Pickpick

Here's the story...of a lovely lady...who kissed a stranger at her daughter's christening party and thus helped to form one highly memorable, Brady Bunch-esque blended family. Patchett renders these four parents and six kids with humor and heart, and though she doesn't necessarily give us a complete picture of any one character, she does give us a moving meditation on family history and the importance of our families' stories.

BookishClaire This is my next book and I can't wait! 8y

In this story of a Cameroonian immigrant couple attempting to navigate life in NYC in the years before and during the recession, Imbolo Mbue has lots to say about the the immigrant experience, as well as our definitions of happiness, hardship and success. It's an excellent book...and it's out TODAY!

Here are two books that may have gotten lost in the August shuffle, but which are absolutely worth a read. One is set in dust bowl-era Oklahoma, and the other features a contemporary clan grappling with the requirements of a special-needs kid...but both are smart, compelling family dramas. Much love!

The Hopefuls: A novel | Jennifer Close
post image
Pickpick

I really, really enjoyed this! I thought this book was great as a satire of young DC, but even better as a portrait of a young marriage. Close gets so many things right about career conflicts, ambition, in-law strife, and the little ways we judge the people in our lives. Well done!

I'm delighted to report that Dave Holmes' memoir is every bit as smart and laugh-out-loud funny as his columns for Vulture. If you're between, say, 30 and 45 years old and have even a passing appreciation for pop music, do something nice for yourself and read this!
