Novel Destinations, Second Edition
Novel Destinations, Second Edition: A Travel Guide to Literary Landmarks from Jane Austen's Bath to Ernest Hemingway's Key West | Shannon McKenna Schmidt, Joni Rendon
17 posts | 7 read | 45 to read
Follow in the footsteps of much-loved authors, including Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, Mark Twain, Jack Kerouac, Jane Austen, and many more. For vacationers who crave meaningful trips and unusual locales, cue National Geographic's Novel Destinations--a guide for bibliophiles to more than 500 literary sites across the United States and Europe. Check into Hemingway's favorite hotel in Sun Valley, or stroll about Bath's Royal Crescent while entertaining fantasies of Lizzie Bennett and her Mr. Darcy. The fully revised second edition includes all of the previous sites--with updated locations--plus color images and an expanded section on all things Bront. The book begins with thematic chapters covering author houses and museums, literary festivals and walking tours. Then, in-depth explorations of authors and places take readers roaming Franz Kafka's Prague, James Joyce's Dublin, Louisa May Alcott's New England, and other locales. Peppered with great reading suggestions and little-known tales of literary gossip, Novel Destinations is a unique travel guide, an attractive gift book, and the ultimate bibliophile's delight.

Seshat I wonder what they have listed for NOLA. I've been to the attic apartment in a garden district mansion where Tennessee Williams wrote Suddenly Last Summer. :) Lafcadio Hearn's grandson cane to NOLA a few years back and was shown the building in the French Quarter where Hearn wrote. There's a statue of.I.J. Reilly. I know a couple of the older bars in the Quarter have a literary pedigree... 7y

Novel Destinations offers a variety of literary and bookish tours to suit all sorts of readers. The tours and experiences range from tour author houses and museums, walking tours, literary festivals, literary lodgings, and curated sections that collect the various places and museums if one loves a particular author. There's a fab index by locale, so if you know you're going to California, you can see what literary things are there to visit.

And then there is the section for one author + one area to really make you feel like a stalker - a literary one, at least!
Obviously the bottom right image that was overwritten with the collage app logo is the chapter on James Joyce's Dublin. Everybody knows that face 😉
Vacation planning = commence!

I deeply love the theme section - with such fun stuff as Literary Resting Places (graves and cemeteries!), From Page to Screen with movie locations based on books, Literary Festivals and Tours (with specific trails in a city to walk, regularly scheduled festivals both generally literary or specific to authors), and an On the Trail of Agatha Christie spread - perfect for planning a vacation!

OMG, this book is crazy cool. Nearly 400 pages of literary destinations?! I'm IN!
It's got everything for dreaming of or planning a trip: sections include: by author - key locales in their life, by theme - around the world, by locale - so you can hit everything in one area, and by author + their primary city/ location - so you can immerse yourself in both at once.
I feel like this has so much to offer it may be on my coffee table for years 😁

Sarah83 Sounds pretty nice. 😍 Can you take a photo of some pages? 😍 7y
