Lies (and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them)
Lies (and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them) | Al Franken
14 posts | 32 read | 8 to read
Al Franken, one of America's savviest satirists has been studying the rhetoric of the Right. He has listened to their cries of 'slander', 'bias' and even 'treason'. He has examined the Bush administration's policies of squandering our surplus, ravaging the environment, and alienating the rest of the world. He's even watched Fox News. A lot. And in this fair and balanced report, Al bravely exposes them all for what they are: liars. Lying, lying, liars.

I know I'm super late in reading this, but even though the people in power have changed, so much of this is still super relevant, maybe even more than it was when this was written. How do we see through structural lies? Lying hasn't changed and being able to spot it is always important. I also loved the bit about Supply Side Jesus. #readingwithrory #rorysbooks #rorygilmorereadinglist #bookspinmarch

Love this quote. As a curious English major though, I am about to not skip ahead, but read it all 🙈 #rebelforlife 😎

For my March #bookspin - I am reading this one. I guess it's getting old, but since they read it on Gilmore Girls, I wanna read it too ☺🙈

Oh Al Franken and your #Indiscrestion(s)! My friend from college is married to his daughter, so I feel bad for them (his family), but we can‘t hold republicans to one standard and dems to another. For a perspective on the funniest part of the episode, see @tournevis ‘s post!

#StarTrekSummerJune I‘m not really in a place where I can continue Star Trek Summer. I‘m sorry to the people whose posts I have enjoyed. 💙

RamsFan1963 @Megabooks Sorry to hear that. I hope everything works out. 5y
Megabooks @RamsFan1963 Thanks. I‘ve really enjoyed your posts. My mental health isn‘t where I can do it right now. 5y
RamsFan1963 @Megabooks Take care of yourself, that's the most important thing. 5y

So, Litsy A to Z (books into movies) 2018 didn‘t work. I admit I lost interest for VX and Z. I will try to do the regular old #litsyatoz with titles only. Life is too short to force yourself to read stuff you don‘t want to read. Lets be friends at Goodreads for the #Goodreads challenge (link in bio)

Kaye Would you say this is as good as his newest one ? 7y
diovival @ferskner Same 💩, different folks. 7y
diovival @Kaye No idea! I live in the backlist and usually playing catch up. Still haven't read this one yet. 🙃 7y
Kaye @diovival Yep I know what you mean. I always have a pile waiting and never get caught up. Kinda like laundry or dishes , only more fun. 7y

Ugh! It was so hard to get through this near the end! I'm trying to remember the beginning, which was good. It just got so tiring. Plus, who wants to remember the Bush years? Do yourself a favor and skip this and read Giant of the Senate instead! #TBRBingo book 3

Megabooks Oh, and I already spent my bingo win. (I'm about to finish a fiction hardback.) I had to jump on this #booksleeve before it got taken off #etsy! 7y
ptkpepe98 Good to know. I was thinking about reading it, but won't now. My TBR already rivals Everest! 7y
LauraJ Already the plan, no matter what audible insists I would like. 7y

LauraBeth It's missing a certain "President's" picture! 7y
sprainedbrain Watching him in senate hearings = 👍👍👍👍 7y
MicheleinPhilly @LauraBeth Well it was written over 10 years ago. I'm sure he's a little too busy to update it seeing as a new edition would likely rival Don Quixote in terms of length. 😉 7y

Mehso-so

Takes a look at the liberal bias in the media and finds it's mostly a for-profit bias. Takes on conservative media and proponents one by one and knocks them over. While Franken seems intelligent and funny, some of this just winds up being mean which I don't think serves to further political discourse in the country. Hopefully, we can move beyond this style of political commentary and begin to communicate without rancor.

I like to read something that I won't get sucked into at night. So it's usually short stories, essays, poetry, etc. Tonight it's a step back in time but I think there maybe some things applicable for our time.
