Art of the Pie: A Practical Guide to Homemade Crusts, Fillings, and Life
Art of the Pie: A Practical Guide to Homemade Crusts, Fillings, and Life | Kate McDermott
12 posts | 7 read | 10 to read
I ve been baking pies my entire life, but making them with Kate was a liberating experience. With a pioneer spirit, she throws the textbook out the window and comes up with absolutely perfect crust filled with fruit that actually sings to you. Ruth ReichlPie-making should be simple and fun. Kate McDermott has taught this and made pies with thousands of people across the country at her Pie Camps. Her confidence comes through in every recipe, and will inspire readers to don an apron, grab a rolling pin, and get cooking. (The stunning photographs in this book won t hurt either.) Over the years, McDermott developed more than a dozen crusts, half of which are gluten-free, and in this book she gives detailed instructions for making, rolling, and baking crusts. A pie needs filling, too, and she does not neglect a single detail when describing her ingredients, methods, and tricks for making the filling and finishing off the pie. Recipes include: Blackberry Pie for Julia ChildThe Best Peach Pie in the WorldOld-Fashioned Rhubarb PieArt of the Pie is more than a cookbook. Kate s rules extend well beyond pie baking: keep everything chilled, respect the boundaries, and remember to vent. This is a book to keep close at hand."

From the renderers of leaf lard used in this very best of crusts, Fannie & Flo Finch: "The Finch girls were always envied for producing a fine tub of fat!"

Happy thanksgiving to all the American #littens out there! My son hates pumpkin pie so I️ added some Star Wars cutout to entice him to try it this year!

MinDea Love it! So cute! 6y

I really loved this book. Her practical advice about life's journeys is as valuable as her knowledge about making pies. This book truly is a bible when it comes to making pies and it is a cinch to follow. She makes you feel good about yourself!

So I may be (definitely am) a little (very) un-social, but I am CLEARLY reading my book here. I don't want to talk to the stranger on the machine next to me about the random news blurb that was just on the TV that I am not watching. Leave me alone lady, the gym is my one hour of uninterrupted reading time that I get each day! (I swear, I'm not a terrible person!! Lol. & the book is surprisingly good so far. Kinda meditative...)

I have no interest in this book, but it's the Big Library Read so I'm seeing it pop up and I felt compelled to borrow it. So now it's another book that will be added to my Goodreads "currently reading" list that will never actually get read! Maybe I'll give it a shot on the elliptical today.

Linda906 It's kind of a strange title for the Big Library Read. But I do love pie!! 7y

I love pie. I love cookbooks. But this seems a bit of an odd pick for Overdrive's "Big Library Read".

Reviewsbylola Agreed, very odd! 7y
sprainedbrain I agree... weird choice. 7y
readordierachel That is strange. Is it kind of a memoir or just a straight cookbook? 7y

Well-ReadNeck Hummmmm. I usually read along, but this is off the wall 7y
intothehallofbooks Yep! Strange choice! 7y
rockpools Odd! It's described as 'heartwarming and funny' - but it won't let me see a sample... 7y
RealLifeReading @ReadOrDieRachel the publishers weekly review makes it sound like a very detailed cookbook http://www.publishersweekly.com/978-1-58157-327-5 7y
RealLifeReading @Reviewsbylola @sprainedbrain I guess Overdrive just wants its users to get cooking! 7y
RealLifeReading @Well-ReadNeck more of a cook-along! 7y
Well-ReadNeck @RealLifeReading ha! True. I see some homemade pies in my future! 😋 7y
Nerdy_chic Yes, quite odd. But I just saw the word "Pie" and that's all I need. LOL. Adding to stack! ? 7y
Zelma Yeah, I thought the same thing. So strange. 7y

My contribution to the best day of the year is a Shaker Lemon Pie 🍋. Coincidentally, this new pie cookbook happened to pass across my desk today at the library. You can bet I put it on hold right away.

#TBRtemptation post! Just look at this cover. Look at it! I know, there goes your diet regimen, right out the window 😂👏🏻. Can't have a Thanksgiving meal without some pie, and my, oh my, do I like the pie recipes I spy in here 😉👍🏻! MMMMmmm 😋! Who needs this book in their lives? #LitsyDoesCooking #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Marchpane Yum! 7y
Dolly Is the book loaded with pie photos? 7y
courtney I would definitely buy to stalk the photos. Making an actual from-scratch pie intimidates me 😂 7y

SharonGoforth Any tot pies in there?? 😊 7y
bookishkai @courtney pie is seriously easy. If making the crust scares you, then use pre-made (I recommend either Marie Callender's or the frozen pie shells at Whole Foods). Filling can be whatever you want; key lime is a really good, hard to mess up starter pie. 7y
mcipher @courtney I agree with @bookishkris - seriously easy as pie 😜 Pumpkin is another good starter pie - or cherry filling from a can! But I always vote homemade crust. It's not nearly as hard as you think and so very worth it. Try Joy the Baker for a recipe - she makes it less scary! 7y
angrylilasian Mmmmm pie! Pie is my happy food. 🤗 7y
LitsyGoesPostal 😎👌🏻 7y
anneofgreentables Pie's the best😊 7y
EloisaJames I have to get myself off this phone... and go make pies!! I have 8 to make. Mostly using Duff's book and First Prize Pie 7y
MrBook @Marchpane 😋👍🏻! @Dolly Can't recall 😕, I do remember tantalizing recipes though 😂! @courtney I'm here for moral support 😉👍🏻! @SharonGoforth 😂😂😂👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻! @bookishkris 😁👏🏻👏🏻! @mcipher 😁🙌🏻!! @angrylilasian 😁👏🏻👏🏻! @CrazyLibraryGirl Aye, that 😉👍🏻! @EloisaJames 😂😂👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙌🏻! 7y
