It's a stunner of a book, visually speaking, and for once actually discusses the Islamic world. But the prose didn't grab me, so more for enthusiasts.

Nice popcorn history.

I'm all about the biographies this week so here's another one: one of the most controversial monarchs in history. It's remarkably even handed- this isn't a hagiography or a hatchet job. Mary was in many ways a competent ruler but managed to fuck up pretty spectacularly. This at least gives her some credit for what she did accomplish.

I'm a sucker for the Georgian period and Queen Caroline's always been a favorite central figure in that. She was tough and intelligent whilst always trying to stay within her role. This is an honest, thorough (dat archival evidence baby) account of an extraordinary woman's life.

Despite being forewarned (it literally said "a history of cannibalism") it was a bit too gruesome for me. And I am a longstanding horror reader. I guess the reality is always worse.

Pick mostly for the first few essays, which are brilliant; as the book goes on they get tedious and navel gazing.

This is possibly the best true crime book I've ever read. Highly recommended.

I'm sure it has great literary value but like so many French books translated into English it made my eyes bleed.
