The Restaurant at the End of the Universe
The Restaurant at the End of the Universe | Douglas Adams
"DOUGLAS ADAMS IS A TERRIFIC SATIRIST." --The Washington Post Book World Facing annihilation at the hands of the warlike Vogons is a curious time to have a craving for tea. It could only happen to the cosmically displaced Arthur Dent and his curious comrades in arms as they hurtle across space powered by pure improbability--and desperately in search of a place to eat. Among Arthur's motley shipmates are Ford Prefect, a longtime friend and expert contributor to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy; Zaphod Beeblebrox, the three-armed, two-headed ex-president of the galaxy; Tricia McMillan, a fellow Earth refugee who's gone native (her name is Trillian now); and Marvin, the moody android who suffers nothing and no one very gladly. Their destination? The ultimate hot spot for an evening of apocalyptic entertainment and fine dining, where the food (literally) speaks for itself. Will they make it? The answer: hard to say. But bear in mind that the Hitchhiker's Guide deleted the term "Future Perfect" from its pages, since it was discovered not to be! "What's such fun is how amusing the galaxy looks through Adams' sardonically silly eyes." --Detroit Free Press From the Paperback edition.

"Why can‘t people just learn to live together in peace and harmony?” said Arthur.
Ford gave a loud, very hollow laugh.
“Forty-two!” he said with a malicious grin. “No, doesn‘t work. Never mind."

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Those are two hoopy froods right there. 2w
Bookwomble @TobeyTheScavengerMonk Indeed! I've tried imagining Arthur voiced by Al Pacino and Ford by John Malkovich, but they keep coming out as Jones and Dixon 😊 2w

The second book in the series. Honestly the plot takes a backseat to the jokes mostly but I still enjoyed this adventure!

I‘d love to travel in space to visit other worlds & particularly love eat at the Restaurant at the End of the Universe, a 5-star restaurant situated at the end of time and matter.

“If you've done six impossible things this morning, why not round it off with breakfast at Milliways, the Restaurant at the End of the Universe."

Thanks @GondorGirl for the opportunity to win! ?

Honestly, I suppose this series is entertaining, but the whole point of the book is to say none of it matters. Hard to get invested with that as a premise. But then, I'm not a nihilist. I suppose certain people go in for this type of thing. And either way, I'll probably finish the series because for some reason I think it matters, if even just a little.

Book 2 in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series. I loved it, but I honestly couldn‘t tell you want happened. It‘s probably for the best because I wouldn‘t want to spoil anything and I definitely think this series is worth reading.

julesG What? Read by Martin Freeman aka Arthur Dent? I need to reread this as an audiobook. 8mo
jmofo I love these books but plot is kind of tertiary (after jokes and world building) until maybe Mostly Harmless which is my favorite of the series (a somewhat unpopular opinion) the Gently books have plot being secondary (after jokes). I always reread in quick succession so I get confused even after all of these years. 💜 (edited) 8mo

This was a lot harder for me to get through than the first. That‘s because I‘ve come to realize my pure hatred for Zaphod Beeblebrox and he takes up most of the book. But all the other bits without him were great and I‘ll definitely be reading the third book!

Martin Freeman does a great job on this audio. His Zaphod voice grates a bit, but as both Freeman and Stephen Fry (who flawlessly narrated the preceding volume) seem to want Zaphod to sound like the most awful American possible, I suppose it‘s intentional.

This was my first revisit since middle school and while I remembered many of the gags a lot of the actual plot stuff was a surprise. Always clever and fun though!

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Freeman‘s very drunk Ford voice was absolutely spectacular. 13mo
Bradleygirl Did you ever listen you the radio shows which predated the books? I'll confess those are my absolute standard for appreciating Douglas Adams. Bought them all on CD 👌 13mo
Swe_Eva Freeman did a great job, even if I‘m partial to Fry as a reader. 13mo

A good sequel but not a great one. I enjoy all the technical and science fiction terms in here, but it can be distracting to the plot at times. Still really funny with good pacing. But not as memorable.
I enjoy the time travel and flash backs, but not everyone does. 7/10

Just what I needed to take my mind off things while packing! You can always expect the unexpected and random with these books, and this was no exception. Not quite as amazing as The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy but fantastic all the same. And Martin Freeman's narration was soooo gooood! I can't wait to read the next one! #audiopacking #overdrive

monkeygirlsmama Ooh I didn't know he narrated these. I'm going to have to look into that. As far as audio goes, I've only listened to the original Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy radio program. It was my first introduction to Douglas Adams. I LOVED it and listened over and over over again to the cassette tape recording my parents had. That's another thing I need to try to locate. Man I loved that. 2y
Aninski @monkeygirlsmama That's so cool!! I was dying to listen to the original series when I discovered Douglas Adams, but couldn't find it anywhere back in the day. I'll see if it's available for download somewhere now 🤞 2y
readinginthedark @monkeygirlsmama That's really neat! I'll have to track that down. I'm sure it's out somewhere. Stephen Fry narrates the first book in this series, and he does a great job, too; but Martin Freeman does at least the next few and does such a fantastic job! I had no idea he could do such a broad range of voices and accents! 2y

vivastory This would be awesome! Loved him in the film adaptation of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy 2y
LibrarianJen Oooh! Does he narrate all the Hitchhikers books? I have the original BBC radio recordings but a Morgan Freeman version is very tempting. 2y
readinginthedark @vivastory It's so good! 2y

readinginthedark @LibrarianJen I've found three or four of them that he narrates; this is the first I'm listening to, of course. Stephen Fry does the audio of the first book, at least the version I found. He does a wonderful job as well, but I'm just loving Freeman so much on this! 2y
readinginthedark @LibrarianJen And I guess I didn't read your comment right the first time. It's Martin, not Morgan, Freeman. Big difference, but both are amazing! 2y
LibrarianJen Ohhhhh actually I suppose I'm the one who didn't read *your* post right the first time 😂😂😂 I was trying to picture Morgan Freeman reading Hitchhikers and yeah. 😳 2y

Fun fact: Got it on eBay for what would have been an amazing deal... except that with taxes and shipping to Canada, it ended up costing exactly as much as a brand new one 😒it was too late to cancel my bid, but luckily it's in perfect condition. Now I know...

saresmoore That's kind of a bummer, but I'm glad it's in excellent shape! 2y

Aninski @saresmoore it was really silly of me to not check the final price before bidding. The auction was ending in a few minutes, I had been wanting to buy this one for a long time and had never seen it so cheap, so I didn't think twice! Oh well, lesson learned 😓 2y

Had a couple of accidents. I shouldn't be allowed out of the office at lunchtime.
I've never read past the first book in this five-part trilogy (that gets me every time), so I'm excited to get started on these.

Bradleygirl Oh gosh. Lots to enjoy. Do see if you can get the radio broadcast (original BBC) as it's the purest wackiness of Adams to be had. I do like the books more for developing more later story 2y
