Secret Path | Gord Downie

Secret Path is a ten song album by Gord Downie with a graphic novel by illustrator Jeff Lemire that tells the story of Chanie Charlie Wenjack, a twelve-year-old boy who died in flight from the Cecilia Jeffrey Indian Residential School fifty years ago. Chanie, misnamed Charlie by his teachers, was a young boy who died on October 22, 1966, walking the railroad tracks, trying to escape from the Cecilia Jeffrey Indian Residential School to return home. Chanie s home was 400 miles away. He didn t know that. He didn t know where it was, nor how to find it, but, like so many kids more than anyone will be able to imagine he tried. Chanie s story is Canada s story. We are not the country we thought we were. History will be re-written. We are all accountable. Secret Path acknowledges a dark part of Canada s history the long suppressed mistreatment of Indigenous children and families by the residential school system with the hope of starting our country on a road to reconciliation. Every year as we remember Chanie Wenjack, the hope for Secret Path is that it educates all Canadians young and old on this omitted part of our history, urging our entire nation to play an active role in the preservation of Indigenous lives and culture in Canada. The next hundred years are going to be painful as we come to know Chanie Wenjack and thousands like him as we find out about ourselves, about all of us but only when we do can we truly call ourselves, Canada. Proceeds from Secret Path will be donated to The Gord Downie Secret Path Fund for Truth and Reconciliation via The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR) at The University of Manitoba."

Reading this book with the soundtrack is such a surreal and haunting experience. It's something everyone should do at least once. Glad to see this book and the stories of residential schools are finding their way into schools..

This far exceeded my expectations which were already high. Reading the book while listening to the accompanying album is an incredible experience. Chanie Wenjack's story is one that every Canadian should know. Jeff Lemire's art style brings the pain and sadness to life.

Can't recommend this enough.

Heartbreaking and haunting. This MUST be read with the album. I don't think you lose a lot, but it def adds something to the experience. I read this entire book with a hitch in my breath and a lump in my throat.

Satisfies the "A book you started and never finished" square in my #LRC2018 Bingo.

TricksyTails @GrilledCheeseSamurai Have you read this? 6y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @TricksyTails Heck yeah I have. Gordon Downie and Jeff Lemire are Canadian icons. Like @MisterWhitaker said...if you can...read it with the album. I...there are no words how much I'm going to miss Gordon Downie. With his passing, coupled with this tragic story all brought together with Lemire's magic...its a crushing book (but so good). 😭 6y
MisterWhitaker @GrilledCheeseSamurai @TricksyTails crushing! What a great word to describe this book. SPOT on! 6y
TricksyTails @MisterWhitaker @GrilledCheeseSamurai Thanks! I'll definitely try to get a hold of the album when I read this. 6y

I love the concept behind this book. Gord Downie, lead singer of the Tragically Hip, wrote it before her passed, with art by Jeff Lemire. It tells the story of a First Nation boy who dies after escaping from an Indian residential school.

While it‘s a bit off-putting to read lyrics when you have never heard the songs, Downie‘s writing and Lemire‘s illustrations work well together to create a haunting interpretation of a truly tragic story. The history of residential schools in Canada is a grim, terrible reality that simply can‘t be ignored and must be spoken about. It‘s a somber note to my day, but an important reminder that as a Canadian, I need to do better. #comicsread2018

Jeff Lemire does a fantastic job capturing the cold, lonely atmosphere of this heartbreaking story. A silent comic paired with Gord Downie‘s lyrics to bring a tragedy back into the social conscious. #comicsread2018

Canada definitely has a dark history that is so very recent. This is the tragic story of Chanie Wenjack, a 12 year old boy that ran away from a Residential School. His goal was simply to go back home. With music by Gord Downie (RIP), and hauntingly beautiful images by Jeff Lemire, Secret Path packs quite a punch.

RIP to a Canadian icon. I grew up listening to and loving The Tragically Hip; the band's music was a soundtrack to so many of my friend's lives as well as my own. Gord will be truly missed. #tragicallyhip #nodressrehearsal #thisisourlife

I made an exception to my #womenshistorymonth reads for this heartbreaking graphic novel. Illustrating the lyrics to Gord Downie's Secret Path album, it tells the story of Charlie Wenjack. At tee age of 12, Wenjack ran away from the Residential School where he had been taken away from his family and abused (an all too common story for Fist Nations Peoples). He died attempting to get home to his family. A hard read, but a vital one.

TheKidUpstairs If anyone wants to learn more about Charlie Wenjack's story, here's a link: http://www.macleans.ca/society/the-lonely-death-of-chanie-wenjack/amp/ 7y

Every Canadian should read this powerful graphic novel about Chanie "Charlie" Wenjack. No words are needed to communicate his heartbreaking story. The beautiful illustrations do that all on their own. ?

Starting an online bookclub full of Ontarian educators discussing and creating resources to implement this graphic novel in our classrooms. It's a graphic novel based on lyrics written by Gord Downie, the lead singer for The Tragically Hip. It reflects on the journey of twelve year old Chanie Wenjack, who ran away from his residential school in hopes of making it back to his community. The Secret Path speculates on his path home.

I watched the animated album videos, airing here in Canada at the time. I spent today reading through the book, at the library. - I first heard of the residential school history at downtown Toronto's Mackenzie House. I am a volunteer member myself, at Georgina Pioneer Village (farmer hat student guide) gladly seeing more included and respectfully remembered on aboriginal history. 🍁 I'm a longtime Hip fan, wishing Gord best health, batting cancer.

#setinmycountry #readjanuary #readcanada Gord Downie's Secret Path book and album is deeply heartfelt for me. I've had the honour of being a part of an aboriginal Healing Circle group, once briefly with the odd experience of a friend's parents (from the Catholic school we attended) giving me concerned talks about their practices; they are Tragically Hip fans, possibly to give this a look. I have more related TBRs, listed below.

Taking a crack at this heartbreaker today. It's about a young Native boy named Chanie Wenjack who died trying to escape and walk home (400 miles) from a Residential school. His is one of the endless tragic stories in the ongoing legacy of cultural genocide and colonization.

Bibliogeekery @Lindy amazing! I'm reading Wenjack next. I'm jealous of all your amazing book clubs! 7y

Book Mail today! I'm nervous and yet excited to read this graphic novel. It's going to be tough. Canadian history sure has a dark side, and I became aware of it during my undergraduate degree, as my hometown University used to be a Residential School. I believe it was one of the last to close in Northern Ontario.

One of my purchases in Toronto this weekend was Gord Downie's new solo album Secret Path on vinyl, which came with this graphic novel written by Downie and illustrated by Jeff Lemire. I haven't had time to read or listen to them yet, but I'm really looking forward to spending some time with this project soon.

PLEASE READ THIS GRAPHIC NOVEL. Thank you Gord Downie and Jeff Lemire for putting this important story out into the world. I hope this becomes required reading for all Canadian schools in the very near future. We must remember the past so we are not doomed to repeat these things in the future. Hope everyone also has a chance to see the CBC animated special.

I bought a couple of very important books today. I love graphic novelist, Jeff Lemire, and Gord Downie is a Canadian icon. Joseph Boyden is a powerful, award winning Canadian novelist. Both of these books address the story of Chanie Wenjack who died trying to get back home from a residential school. The residential schools are a horrible tragedy that severely impacted so many of Canada's indigenous families. My heart breaks just thinking about it
