The Quilter's Apprentice
The Quilter's Apprentice: A Novel | Jennifer Chiaverini
11 posts | 11 read | 10 to read
Jennifer Chiaverinis bestselling Elm Creek Quilts series starts with The Quilters Apprentice, a timeless tale of family, friendship, and forgiveness as two women weave the disparate pieces of their lives into a bountiful and harmonious whole, and begin the legacy of the Elm Street Quilters. When Sarah McClure and her husband, Matt, move to Waterford, Pennsylvania, she hopes to make a fresh start in the small college town. Unable to find a job both practical and fulfilling, she takes a temporary position at Elm Creek Manor helping its reclusive owner Sylvia Compson prepare her family estate for sale and after the death of her estranged sister. Sylvia is also a master quilter and, as part of Sarahs compensation, offers to share the secrets of her creative gifts with the younger woman. During their lessons, the intricate, varied threads of Sylvias life begin to emerge. It is the story of a young wife living through the hardships and agonies of the World War II home front; of a family torn apart by jealousy and betrayal; of misunderstanding, loss, and a tragedy that can never be undone. As the bond between them deepens, Sarah resolves to help Sylvia free herself from remembered sorrows and restore her lifeand her hometo its former glory. In the process, she confronts painful truths about her own family, even as she creates new dreams for the future. Just as the darker sections of a quilt can enhance the brighter ones, the mistakes of the past can strengthen understanding and lead the way to new beginnings. A powerful debut by a gifted storyteller, The Quilters Apprentice tells a timeless tale of family, friendship, and forgiveness as two women weave the disparate pieces of their lives into a bountiful and harmonious whole.

In honor of National Quilting Day here are 3 of my favorite quilts that I‘ve made. The top two were wedding gifts and the other was for myself from fabric gifted to me by a friend. I loved the Elm Creek Quilt series of books and hope to make quilts from the companion quilting books one day.

This was a charming debut for the author. It was a bit fluffier than the stand alone novels of the authors that I have read. And had more drama than I was expecting. Her writing has improved with her experience. I was more interested in the Mrs. Compson‘s story than the MC‘s story line. Definitely worth getting the next book in the series. It made me want to use the quilting lessons my mother and grandmother taught me.

I found this series about the same time I started learning to quilt. It‘s about friendship and family and how a shared love of quilting or whatever can bring together different personalities and make lasting bonds. There are also quilt pattern books that I love. #20series20days. Day 9

HeathHof Have you ever read The Persian Pickle Club? 4y
Andrew65 A great coincidence! 4y
Deblovestoread @Mynameisacolour I have read that one and a few others by Sandra Dallas. 4y

This picture definitely does not do my #makerswap gifts justice. Thankyou @Freespirit for spoiling me. You are one talented lady. It was wrapped beautifully. The time you spent making this precious bag and book cover for me is just too much for me to handle. I love it. You get me. I will have time to make that obi pouch soon as my holidays start after today and my step daughters leave on Sunday for horse riding camp xo

@Wife This is "my" quilt... the first one I made just for me... the one I read under. Shortly after my 30th birthday I took this as a class ... it's called My 3 Stars

DGRachel That's beautiful! ?. Are the stars pieced or appliquéd? (edited) 7y

Rough week! Hubby was out of town for 2 weeks, & the kids had everything under the sun this past week, 6 days of baseball practice, tech week for Ariel in The Little Mermaid Jr, 3 scout meetings, 2 cheer practices, pup is in the kennel and a houseful of guests for the weekend. I'm super grumpy because I have hardly read and I hate super busy weeks but my MIL finished my quilt and it's beautiful!!! Plus, my daughter killed it in her performances!

JacqMac Beautiful! 7y
Centique That's a huge week - but YAY for the beautiful quilt! 7y
lynneamch Congrats on all accounts! ☺ 7y
Lynnsoprano Beautiful! I also enjoyed the Chiaverini quilter books, even though I don't sew anything, much less quilt. 7y

Found this one while searching for some #cozyreads. In addition to designing and making quilts, Chiaverini is the author of more than 25 novels. Might seem old-fashioned for some as it was published in 1999 and features a lot about quiltmaking and history, but it's also about multigenerational friendships. Here atop a quilt sewn by my grandmother.❤️#quiltsandbooks #quiltingwriters #jenniferchiaverini
