The Hate U Give
The Hate U Give | Angie Thomas
Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, Angie Thomass searing debut about an ordinary girl in extraordinary circumstances addresses issues of racism and police violence with intelligence, heart, and unflinching honesty. Soon to be a major motion picture from Fox 2000/Temple Hill Productions. Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalils name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr. But what Starr doesor does notsay could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

Reading this book left me feeling like Ariana Grande., I've got no tears left to cry. Which is why I procrastinated on reading it for as long as I could, because I knew it would destroy me. What an important book. I think it should be a compulsory read in high schools. Five stars. Ten if that was a thing.

This is a book that everyone should read. It‘s needs to be required reading in high schools. I‘m so bummed I waited so long to read it but I‘m so so glad I finally did.

It‘s not an easy read. It will challenge everyone and that‘s important.

I have no other words.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️First book of 2020 and it was a great one. I did audio for this one and the narrator is fantastic. One of my favorite readers.

A heavy emotional book but a necessary one unfortunately. Police shootings are gun violence and we need to address it. The book does a great job in tackling this subject.

britt_brooke Bahni Turpin is my favorite narrator! 2w
krayoncolorz @britt_brooke so so good. It was right up there with the Help audio! 2w
britt_brooke @krayoncolorz Oh yes, The Help is one of the best audio productions I‘ve listened to. And of course, Turpin is one of the narrators. 💚 2w

This book hurts!
I avoided it for so long as I was put off by all the hype: so, it turns out the hype is well-deserved. I don't think there's anything else I can say that hasn't already been said. I just want to thank Angie Thomas for her generosity in letting me into a world I otherwise only catch glimpses of from the outside.

Reggie I love what the mom tells her about doing the right thing no matter what, what the nurse had told her, I love that her mom tells her about sometimes you have to let go of friends. I don‘t think teenage girls get that message enough, especially when the friend is toxic. I love that Angie made Starr‘s boyfriend white. She came at you from all angles. This book is one of my favorite in the past years. Sooo good. Also, her dad‘s Harry Potter theory. 1mo

Red is my favorite color but green is definitely up there, as far as colors I love go. I decided to make a #redandgreenstack for Christmas but the book choices make this look incredibly un-Christmas-y. 😂 If you made a stack with some of your favorite colors, what colors would you choose?

marleed I have so much fun stacking my books by color as a way for my collection to not look like an isle at Borders. My front room shelves are staked by color for a monthly theme. It lets me ‘play‘ my books. Because I change out my front room shelves, my reading room lined shelves are constantly morphing. In Jan I‘ll go for a gray/white/purple snow theme. 1mo

The reason I chose this book was because I've heard a lot about the impactful messages it has about racism, protesting and young black teens in this generation. I wanted to read it due to its point of views on those topics.
Starr Carter is in between her poor neighbourhood and wealthy school. Reality hits her when her bestfriend gets shot by a police officer. For once, she wants her voice to be heard.

How did you choose this book: I recently found this while cleaning my room and realized I never read it. I saw the movie, and decided to compare the book and film with each other.

Write a brief summary of the novel; who was the protagonist; what was his/her problem and how was the problem resolved?

sofia.aniela Starr Carter is a 16 year old black girl that attended a party in her neighbourhood, Garden Heights. She reunites with her old friends, but people with guns roll around and start a conflict. Quick to get away, Starr and her friend Khalil leave the party. As they were driving around, a police car comes after them and asks them for the proper papers and ID. 1mo
sofia.aniela Starr has always been taught to respect the police, but Khalil, being the stubborn one, decides to “play around” and not give in for the first few questions. Once he obeyed the officer, he does something that scares the officer, causing him to shoot. This was the moment Khalil died. The rest of this book talks about the injustice and racism that goes on in society. Although a white police man committed murder, he did not get arrested. 1mo
sofia.aniela This book gives people a perspective of what it is like to be in this kind of situation, and how people from the opposite side react. (edited) 1mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I‘m super late to the game, but this definitely lives up to the hype! I recently read On the Come Up, too, and appreciate Thomas‘s creation of Garden Heights. I hope she continues to set stories there; continues to open our eyes. Gaining perspective is vital.

Reggie The part where the mother tells her about her birth and what the nurse tells her about doing the right thing. I loved that. Also I appreciated what the mother had to say about how sometimes you have to let a friend go. I don‘t think girls get that message enough. (edited) 3mo

There are so many stereotypes in our heads and sometimes it's enormously hard to overcome them and that's why books like this need to be read. Here and now. So everybody go and read this book!

I read this for Banned Books Week. Although fiction it gave me new perspective in the Black Lives Matter movement.
One reason for banning, portraying the police unfairly. Sounds to me like someone who hasn‘t read it. It shows the good & bad in our justice department, the good & bad in gangs, the good & bad in people of many colors.
My favorite is that a student in TX got 4,000 petition signatures to get it in their school library.✊🏿✊🏾✊🏼✊🏻✊🏽

ElizaMarie I think this book was so good. I am glad you were able to pick it up. I think because of the genre a lot of people haven't read it and well it feels like they should. It is a great conversation starter. 3mo

This RF novel written by Angie Thomas has won the National Book and Coretta Scott King awards. Starr sees the uneasy balance between the poor, mostly black neighbourhoods and the rich, mostly white neighbourhoods come to life. When Starr watches her friend, a black boy, get shot and killed by a cop, she has to find her voice, not be scared, and stand up for what's right. This book represents the Black Lives Matter movement. #UCFLAE3414F19

JRone This book is great for an IR and the lesson plan http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/developing-critic... allows children to dig deeper in the Black Lives Matter movement and connect it to prior knowledge. 4mo
JRone UDL strategy 5.1, use multiple media for communication would allow children to use different resources for their research. EL strategy #36, ask numerous questions which require higher-level thinking responses is perfect to get students thinking about how this book applies to their everyday lives and the real world. 4mo
Lrobertson This book was actually turned into a movie. I think linking the 2 for older students (maybe high school because of the violence) would be a great source! 4mo
TristanPool Just from the movie trailer, this book has such a powerful message for the Black Lives Matter movement. I think it would be a great choice to include in a classroom library, so kids could see through the window of individuals that differ from them. @JRone 4mo

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas is a Coretta Scott King honor book and New York Times Bestseller. This book is about a girl named Start who watched her best friend get shot by a white police officer. Starr doesn't know what to do but knows she has to do something so she speaks out about what happen and trying to get justice for her best friend. This book is a RF and would be a good book for LC or IR. #UCFLAE3414F19

DrSpalding Make sure you use the rubric as your guide. We will review another post in class. 4mo
AleciaM The ESOL strategy I would use for this book is #29. Offer a variety of reference material at the students' instructional level for independent use. The UDL strategy I would use would be 4.2 optimize access to tools and assistive technology.
https://b0f646cfbd7462424f7a-f9758a43fb7c33cc8adda0fd36101899.ssl.cf2.rackcdn.co...
(edited) 4mo
AleciaM I choose strategies because some ESOL students may not understand the lingo that is used thought the book. For UDL some students need to actually hear the audio book as they follow along. This would be part of their assistive technology. 4mo
