Tokyo on Foot
Tokyo on Foot: Travels in the City's Most Colorful Neighborhoods | Florent Chavouet
12 posts | 7 read | 10 to read
This prize-winning book is both an illustrated tour of a Tokyo rarely seen in Japan travel guides and an artist's warm, funny, visually rich, and always entertaining graphic memoir. Florent Chavouet, a young graphic artist, spent six months exploring Tokyo while his girlfriend interned at a company there. Each day he would set forth with a pouch full of color pencils and a sketchpad, and visit different neighborhoods. This stunning book records the city that he got to know during his adventures. It isn't the Tokyo of packaged tours and glossy guidebooks, but a grittier, vibrant place, full of ordinary people going about their daily lives and the scenes and activities that unfold on the streets of a bustling metropolis. Here you find business men and women, hipsters, students, grandmothers, shopkeepers, policemen, and other urban types and tribes in all manner of dress and hairstyles. A temple nestles among skyscrapers; the corner grocery anchors a diverse assortment of dwellings, cafes, and shopsoften tangled in electric lines. The artist mixes styles and tags his pictures with wry comments and observations. Realistically rendered advertisements or posters of pop stars contrast with cartoon sketches of iconic objects or droll vignettes, like a housewife walking her pet pig, a Godzilla statue in a local park, and an urban fishing pond that charges 400 yen per half hour. This very personal guide to Tokyo is organized by neighborhood with hand-drawn maps that provide an overview of each neighborhood, but what really defines them is what caught the artist's eye and attracted his formidable drawing talent. Florent Chavouet begins his introduction by observing that, "Tokyo is said to be the most beautiful of ugly cities." With wit, a playful sense of humor, and the multicolor pencils of his kit, he sets aside the question of urban ugliness or beauty and captures the Japanese essence of a great city in this truly vital portrait.

TOKYO ON FOOT is yet another book I grabbed off the library shelf without realizing I‘d stacked it on Litsy. It‘s a French artist‘s visual memoir of the six months he spent wandering around Tokyo while his partner completed an internship, and I‘m having a great time with it. He came across so many interesting little things the average tourist experience cuts out of the equation.

dabbe Casey's awake! Hi, sweet boy! Did you have a good nap(s)? 🖤🐾🖤 9mo
xicanti @dabbe he always wants to snuggle and play in the evening! He was on my lap for a bit right before this pic was taken, even though he doesn‘t really fit. 9mo
dabbe @xicanti He is just the cutest! He also reminds me of my spaniel Caramel. 💙🖤🩵 9mo

An idiosyncratic travel sketchbook and memoir that documents 6 months spent in Tokyo in 2006, while Frenchman Florent Chavouet‘s partner was there for an internship. The highly detailed drawings & maps are mostly in coloured pencil; there are little cartoon sequences; and lots of funny comments as he speculates about the things & people he sees. I like the way it captures the disorientation of daily life in an unfamiliar environment. #graphicnovel

Have any of you Littens seen the movie Shoplifters? (Directed by Kore-Eda Hirokazu.) This house reminds me of the neighbourhood in Tokyo where Shoplifters is set. It‘s a really good movie. The trailer is here: https://youtu.be/Rwcb5ki1f-4

diovival Thanks for the recommendation! 5y
sarahbarnes I saw this film and was blown away. Such a complex story, a brilliant portrayal of societal values and how those run up against what is actually right or good. And yes, this house definitely looks like theirs! Thanks for sharing. 5y
AnneCecilie I‘m going to see it tomorrow. I hope it is as good as everyone says it is. 5y

Lindy @AnneCecilie @diovival It‘s the kind of film that begs discussion afterward, so see it with friends if you can. Do you agree @sarahbarnes ? 5y
sarahbarnes Absolutely. I saw it with a friend and it was great to have someone to discuss it with after...over drinks. 😁 5y
Nute I have to keep this film on my radar. It looks very interesting. 5y
batsy I loved Nobody Knows so much. I haven't watched any of his other movies because I feel I need to be emotionally prepared. 5y
Lindy @Nute 👍 5y
Lindy @batsy Shoplifters has an emotional wallop, so it‘s good to be prepared. I‘ve read that this one is his most accessible to date. 5y

The vertical bun hairstyle that Chavouet sketched while people watching in Tokyo reminds me of images of the way men styled their hair in the Heian period. #Genji

Tanisha_A Wow! You are really getting prepared for your upcoming trip! 😎 5y

This was my #ReadHarder2017 choice for travel memoir. The French artist, who was 23 at the time, accompanied his girlfriend for her 6 month internship in Tokyo. He spent his time riding a "borrowed" bicycle and sketching different neighborhoods.

#RiotGrams Day 26 - Okay, Tokyo Demons isn't actually in Litsy's database, but Ayase is one of my favorite book heroines. That's her on the cover... dissolving into bees.

Basically a graphic travel memoir. Chavouet traveled from one Tokyo neighbourhood to another and drew everything he saw there. Beautiful art and a sense of the people.
