A Little Life: A Novel | Hanya Yanagihara

Bailedbailed

I made it 300 pages in and couldn't take it anymore. I couldn't sympathize with any of the characters.

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Totally with you. Wish I had bailed instead of slogging through 800 pages of reader-manipulation and repetiton. Ug. 8y
GatheringBooks that's a brilliant face swap. too bad you didn't like it. our book club was sorely divided about this novel. i personally found it riveting but i could understand why other people would bail and just give up entirely. 8y

This felt like it had a little more resolution than Tomine's previous collections. I really like the subtlety in his stories.

How can something be so fun, yet dark?! This is a graphic novel that confronts that feeling of being something other, of being labeled and misunderstood, all told with cute graphics and spunk.

GatheringBooks one of my favourite reads from last year 8y

It had its ups and downs, but overall was an interesting read. I found some of the chapters boring and I get the sense that Alex disguises a lot of her conniving as just being a "formless, lost girl." Maybe I'm morbid, but I was disappointed that more page time wasn't dedicated to the corpse guy.

I'm still trying to figure out how I feel about this book. I'm classifying it as a memoir, and Alex and I don't always agree. I don't know if I can trust her. I sympathize with her draw to the liminal, but is that impetuous enough?

Shortstack Is the intent of the book to have an unreliable narrator? Because that can be enjoyable. However, not as much when the intent is to be reliable and they still seem untrustworthy. 8y

This is one of the best writing books out there. I don't even like Stephen Kings fiction that much and I'm obsessed with this book.

I was forced to read this in college and meet the man and his giant lying head and I hated it.

DivineDiana Oh my! Just starting to read. Why do you say he is a liar? 8y
ScrappyMags @DivineDiana I know it's a bit late but if you Google him you'll see this book was made up, he lied, etc 8y
DivineDiana @scrappymags Thank you for getting back to me! Never too late! I did Google him after your comment. Although I was disappointed, I still felt that he was remarkable and did help many people. He seems to have repented and is continuing to help others. 8y
ScrappyMags @DivineDiana yeah I think the problem is one of credibility when you do that because then you have to question what he IS being truthful about. :( 8y
