I'm going with this one instead to end the year / start the new year.
pickWhat a book. It started off with a quirky, independent little girl, and progressed into the story of a young woman who wants to get away from her small English town and limited life choices. Augusta and Parfaits stories run side by side, and you know they‘re going to meet. It‘s a bit heart rending (Mediterranean refugee crisis & suicide feature). Loved it.

So, there was a lot to like about this book. Augusta was a great character; she brought a lot of humour to the story and her hunger for knowledge was infectious (yes, maybe I did think about starting Latin on Duolingo after she‘d talked about it).
BUT, I also had some reservations. It felt to me like a book that was one thing in the first 2/3rds and something else in the last. It was also fairly obvious what the ending was going to be......TBC

It took me awhile to get into this one but I'm glad I stuck by it because I enjoyed the 2nd part of the book much more. The author wrote about loss and suffering very well and I liked the character of Augusta. The only drawback for me was that some parts moved too slowly and the ending felt too neatly packaged.

Augusta is the odd sister, never fitting into her family, though she lives the best life she can in her own skin, driven by words.
Parfait is the oldest son of a Burundian family, being torn apart by war, who wants to escape.
A story of intersection, the impact of love and loss, and human relationships.

Can‘t say too much without giving away the major plot line but I think that Augusta wonders #didImakethemostoflovingyou in this book.....

I chose this novel because people have compared it to Eleanor Oliphant which I adored.
I loved the story. But, what prevented me from giving it 5 stars was the lack of depth that the characters received. I love knowing, understanding and empathising for the characters. I could still do it to a certain degree, not as much though.
Excellent, heartbreaking story of survival and belonging. I just wanted more depth.
When you‘re at the tail end of the book and you can‘t stop reading even though it is almost midnight.
I am loving this story, loving it. How I wish there was more detail though! Started off so well at the beginning with the years being mentioned and significant historical events but now...
I want to know more what the characters are feeling and seeing. I don‘t really get that from this novel.
Anyone else agree?
Shouldn‘t we first be tipped upside down to let all our knowledge out - like when you empty a piggy bank of its coins?

pickSuch an unexpected, emotional read with literally a bit of everything. Really enjoyed it and had a little cry in the middle. I actually love books that make me cry unexpectedly.

pickAugusta is the quirky twin, the clever one who doesn‘t quite fit in, while Parfait is raising his siblings in war torn Burundi. Worlds apart they are, yet this is their story. And, my goodness, it is lovely. The writing is simple and poignant - which did feel a bit YA for me at first - but literally had me weeping at the halfway mark. Lovely 💫💕
Looking forward to this one. Friday nights are always better with a new book.
pickOof, this was a heart-breaker. From the Readers First extract that I read, I expected a Ginny Moon or perhaps an Eleanor Oliphant.
I certainly didn‘t expect the second strand of the story, a desperate refugee from war-torn Burundi.
It‘s a tough read but beautifully written. I only received it yesterday lunchtime so, as you can tell, I just couldn‘t put it down.

TBH though a hardback book should have been sent in a cardboard sleeve / envelope rather than a too-big Jiffy bag.
Luckily the book (an ARC from Readers First, tagged) is OK....
