What I like about Stephen King books is that they are more about people and less about the monsters.
No masterpiece, but entertaining. A stocking filler, no more.

I'm a big King fan, 30 years now, but an immense character list doesn't always mean good. It could mean too many characters to really care what happens to them. It could mean the reader never really gets to know the characters. And it could even mean that a single plot from various perspectives is stretched too thin.
It could mean all these things. Bailed.

Hi Littens
Just running a little survey.
Do many of you read serialized fiction? Perhaps a novel broken down into weekly chapters/episodes. Seems to be coming back into fashion. Or is this a new wave of teen readers reading off a phone screen?
👌📚👍

Kaye The only thing I‘ve read that came close to that was back when a Green Mile was put out in separate tiny books. I didn‘t really like it myself. I‘d rather have the whole story all in one book together. 2y
JonathanDunne @Kaye I'm the same as you and thanks for replying :-) 2y
julesG That sounds very "Wattpad" to me ? I'd rather have the whole story in one. 2y
See All 22 Comments
CatLass007 Serial Reader provides this service. Serial Reader is all books that are in the public domain, whose copyrights have expired. It‘s a great way to read the classics, such as Les Miserables or Anna Karenina. 2y
JonathanDunne @julesG Yes. Lots of serialised fiction websites are popping up. Some writers are having success but I'm sceptical. Dickens had success, but they were different times maybe. 2y
LibrarianRyan I few years ago this was heavy in erotic novels. It was nice because you got a new installment ever other month. Recently the one I recognize is remade. I think for ebooks it works. It allows teens and those on a tight budget to pay for the book in installments. Plus get their hands on things early. And only once the last installment is ready to come out is the book put out in print. I think it's a great way to find new readers. 2y
LibrarianRyan But installments in print versions I hate!! 2y
julesG @CatLass007 I agree, but it's different with a classic. I can only read them in bite size anyway, so I don't mind the serialisation. 2y
JonathanDunne @LibrarianRyan I agree. It is a good way to find new readers, talking about the format. But I suppose the story has to hold up for readers to tune in every week. 2y
CatLass007 @JonathanDunne Serial Reader is free and has some wonderful works. 2y
JonathanDunne @CatLass007 Do Readers pay weekly for these installments? 2y
CatLass007 @JonathanDunne No, they‘re free. IF you want to read ahead, there is an annual fee of $4.99. Then you get all the installments at once in the book to which you‘re subscribed. There is only one fee once a year for as many books as you can read. (edited) 2y
kylienoele Personally I'd rather have a whole book at once than small chapters. Serial reader is great though and has helped me get through a few classics! 2y
JonathanDunne @kylienoele is there any new original material on that website? 2y
kylienoele @JonathanDunne Not to my knowledge! 2y
DGRachel Serial Reader is the only site I‘m familiar with that does installments, and I‘m not a fan. I prefer having the whole book in hand, even if I only have time to read a chapter or two a day. 2y
Jas16 I am not sure I would be interested in serialized reading. I am not sure I have the patience required. 2y
Cortg I use Serial Reader but I don‘t have a “habit” to read 10-20 min. of the daily issue each day. How many days does it take to form a new habit, 60? I‘m trying though. 2y

Yes, I'm a big fan of the HP books & films. 5* all the way.

However, there's a whole pile of wrong with this 'book'. Too many wrongs to mention here.

Talk about watering down HP to the point of drowning the poor wizard. I would've loved to have seen a real 8th instalment instead of this poor substitute. A real pity and a lost opportunity :(

LibrarianRyan And this the reason I can not bring myself to read it. I just can't. 😕 2y
JonathanDunne @LibrarianRyan yeah, sad. It really is. 2y
Jess7 Oh no! I really enjoyed it. 😳🤓 2y
See All 16 Comments
JonathanDunne @Jess7 I'm a purist. I said 'Oh No' when I heard she'd turned it into a theatre play. How could JK hand her baby over to someone else? I couldn't and wouldn't. I'll never understand. But good for you 😀 2y
monkeygirlsmama I'm trying to keep an open mind, but reading it on the heels of finishing the original series for the first time feels a bit like stubbing your toe on the way to the bathroom to clean up after a particularly enjoyable bedding. 😝 2y
JonathanDunne @monkeygirlsmama Wait, am I reading this right?😉 2y
monkeygirlsmama @JonathanDunne 🤣Should I plead the fifth? 2y
minkyb Have not read this yet. I don't want anything to mar my Harry Potter love. 2y
TheDigressiveApproach I agree. This veered so far from the previous books it gave me whiplash. Harry's character seems all wrong, there are so many inconsistencies (*cough* Timeturners *cough*) and I really don't like the whole Voldy part. 2y
JonathanDunne @minkyb Read at your own risk 😯 2y
JonathanDunne @Evoke It puts a shadow over everything (JK & HP) as far as I'm concerned. I was disappointed that JK chose this path. Instead of producing an 8th instalment (though I think HP's story finished at the right point, if not, it could go on and on) she decided to kill the HP illusion IMO. Easy💰 2y
TheDigressiveApproach @JonathanDunne Exactly. I was surprised Rowling approved of the script and all. The plot of this just doesn't make it feel like an 8th instalment at all. Almost seems like bad fanfiction. 2y
JonathanDunne @Evoke And that's what it is unfortunately. The JK Rowling team are taking credit for a sell-out theater play but anything with Harry Potter written on it will sell out. Kill the magic 😕 2y
TheDigressiveApproach @JonathanDunne I'm just glad that it's over. Hopefully there's no more of this. On the bright side, the Fantastic Beasts movie was just brilliant imo 💯 2y
spanda84 I wasn't a fan of it either! I did enjoy the Fantastic Beasts movie, and am looking forward to the HP historical books coming out soon! 2y

Mehso-so

Started out promising but was an anticlimax for me. The story is more about the characters than the haunted house which is secondary. I was hoping for more 'haunting' and to understand more about the house's ghosts. Also the Eleanor character annoyed me. This book is very influential in the horror genre as it broke conventions but I found the ending to be formulaic. Worth a read but a let down IMO.

mcipher I wonder if reading it when it first came out would be different. My husband and I watched Casablanca for the first time last year and it was so hard to remind ourselves that this and that moment were not cliches, they came from the movie and we're new when it was released! 3y

I've reconsidered this from a 'so-so' to a parachute bail.

Less is more in my book, pun intended. Started out promisingly creepy but winded itself and became too Hollywood for my liking.

Who can recommend a terrifying supernatural horror/thriller? Stephen King/Straub/Koontz etc are more of a funfair ghost train read. I'm looking for a book that will make me wish that scraping is only a branch at my window. Recently read The Exorcist. Wow.

JanuarieTimewalker13 I read it a long time ago and I'm not a horror genre type, but Intensity by Koontz scared me. I don't remember how much, but enough to scare me off of Koontz for a great while (forever). 3y
Alfoster I second that! Intensity is scary!😱😱And if you want psychological creepiness, I recommend Perfect Days. 3y

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Bird Box. Definitely Bird Box 3y
Reggie All 3 are great in different ways. Penpal made the hair on my arms stand up while i was reading it at work. Nick Cutter has a way of taking the creepy crawlys to the nth degree. And The Last Days I read right before Halloween and made me want to thank the book gods for sending it my way during October. 3y
BrittanyReads Scared the pants off me! Pretty fast paced IMHO. The end got weird but scary all the same 3y

Surprised to hear that the writer wrote comedy before The Exorcist.

Litsy Friends,

I've been reading many of your thoughts and reviews. I'm going to throw my own hat into the ring...Is that the saying? If you like things such as mystical misty Celtic islands, lost love affairs, the end of the world, dancing as if your life depends on it, and wayward dwarves, then I ask you to consider or perhaps pass on this succinct message.

All my books are, in essence, about people living the dream.

Jon

One doesn't have to be a fan of Wes Anderson to enjoy Stefan Zweig. It's true that Zweig found more readers after The Grand Budapest Hotel.
The mark of a great writer is when he/she is able to describe something that will forever be on the tip of your tongue.
He says of an awkward12 year old boy: "The struggle between man and boy seemed only just about to begin."

Kathrin I started last year with the complete works of Stefan Zweig's, hopefully I can finish them this year! 3y
JonathanDunne @Kathrin Do you like his work or do you find it work? 3y
Kathrin I like it. I think he chronicled the political and social developments in Europe in the time between the WW very well. I just read The Compulsion earlier this week - it's short. I am still in the works published in the early 20s. 3y

JonathanDunne @Kathrin Im reading the burning secret 3y
julesG Reminds me of my school days. Either his work was part of the curriculum or it was something I picked up, because it seemed interesting. 3y

Firstly, Happy New Year to you and yours 🎉

Secondly, I've been a little remiss recently due to this little forest pixie... Her name is Erin. She's my third daughter...all girls in my house.

She's not a great reader but she loves to write - she's already written a 1000-page black comedy in 19 days, which I'm now trawling for typos (she doesn't have any which is worrying).

Alfoster Soooo sweet! Congratulations!😍 3y

Really enjoyed this long meandering novel which seems to dip in and out of various genres.

it reminded me of early Stephen King in places.

Some people were confused but I did not find it confusing at all. Maybe I'm missing something :-)

haanim I belong in the confused camp ? I actually set it aside for a while, because I felt I needed a "lighter" read. But I intend to revisit it before the year is over ? 3y

Anyone read this?

I'm thinking about reading it but the reviews are very hit-and-miss

Redwritinghood I read it awhile ago and was so-so on it. 3y
JonathanDunne @Redwritinghood Hmm, interesting 3y
Centique I was the same. I think someone raved about it overly to me and I expected something different. It's very well written, just more angsty and contemplative than I was in the mood for at the time. I enjoyed the second one more. 3y
See All 14 Comments
Balibee146 Yeah so so - think I expected too much! 3y
JessClark78 I was thrown off by the mixed reviews at first, but I eventually bought the boxed set in preparation for the TV series. I really enjoyed the first two books. I'm reading the third book after I finish my current read. 3y
kim.guernsey I read it and enjoyed it but only because I ignored reviews and the whole "Harry Potter for adults" salespitch. I took it as it was and liked it for what was given to me. 3y
JonathanDunne @AReaderWhoMoms Is it HP for adults? 3y
annahenke Nope, definitely not! @JonathanDunne 3y
DeborahSmall I'd have to start with the first book 3y
Letora I tried, but I couldn't get into it 3y
kim.guernsey @JonathanDunne Def NOT HP for adults. There's magic, there's a school. That's where the similarities end. 3y
ApoptyGina69 It's floating around the house someplace. In my guy's #TBR I think. I'll have to ask what he thought. 3y
ReadingRover I've read it. I liked it. It's a bit hard to love and get into at first. I ended up reading the whole series but I'm a bit obsessive like that unless I absolutely hate something. It's not HP and the tv series does not stay true to the books. Idk if that helps. 3y
JulAnna I read and enjoyed this one! It was a slow start for me and I had to try twice, but then became completely immersed! 😊 3y

Bailedbailed

I tried...

I like the premise...I love the premise. But I feel snails and sloths may gravitate towards this.

Maybe I'll try again in the future when the world is in slow-mo and the book catches up with it.

TrishB I bailed on this too.....just didn't do it for me! 3y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Im currently reading - on page 250 or so and loving it. Does it eventually just sap your energy? I can see that happening. 3y
BookishJess I bailed as well. I made it about halfway through. 3y
See All 19 Comments
Alfoster I couldn't get into this either. Glad it's not just me!😜 3y
julesG I bailed as well. Probably somewhere around page 200. 3y
Bambolina_81 I've tried this twice now, again I love the premise but it just dawdles for me 🙄 3y
LazyLibrary I just bought this from the thrift shop! Uh oh! 3y
Shemac77 I bailed too! 3y
JanJan You should try watching the BBC adaptation to spark your interest. It's so good and funny! 3y
Balibee146 I have bailed twice but still wish I could....good tip @JanJan 3y
JonathanDunne @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled.com It's like an eagle that never takes off. 3y
JonathanDunne @jessreadsbooks I didn't get that far 3y
JonathanDunne @LazyLibrary You might enjoy it. Just wasn't for me 3y
ReadingEnvy I've bailed on the book twice and also on the TV show. I hate that I can't get into it! Neil Gaiman says it's in his top ten! 3y
Becky_boohoo I managed the book but it was painful. I enjoyed the tv series. 3y

Love this book. Listening on audio. I do tend to switch off for Gaiman's narration parts - his voice and tone are not compatible with my ear.
But a great story and an easy read...if a little bizarre at times.

julesG Funny. I like listening to Gaiman's voice. Love the Graveyard Book narrated by him. 3y
Tcip I actually loved his narration. The full cast on this one was fantastic. 3y
LazyLibrary I'm embarrassed to say it, but I didn't understand this book at all. Like, my brain had no idea what was going on. Waiting for the tv series to shed some light on it! 😳 3y
ReadingRover I loved this audiobook! 3y

I've started this and enjoying it. Perhaps a tad verbose but I feel it comes with the territory.

Seems fewer people finish it.

JacqMac I just love the word "verbose". 3y
Leniverse It took me two attempts. Several years apart. My partner, on the other hand, got through it in short order when I put it down the first time. 3y
JonathanDunne @JacqMac Yes. Verbose sounds verbose. 3y
See All 11 Comments
JonathanDunne @Leniverse I'm savouring one page at a time. Let's see how long savouring lasts. 3y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag I gave up when I dropped it on my face. (I was enjoying it up to that point. Although my finger has probably healed sufficiently that it would be safe to try again 😂) 3y
TheLondonBookworm It's very dense... I'll let you know when I get to the end ☺️ 3y
Robothugs There's always the BBC mini series if you can't make it through. 😂 3y
JonathanDunne @Robothugs I'll try the book while I can and watch the mini series on my deathbed😃 3y
Leniverse The mini series wasn't bad. It made the women less useless. But there were changes I didn't agree with too. The book is hard work but worth it. 3y

If you had a daemon, which animal would it be?

A reliable source has told me that mine is an owl ^(0v0)^

PS a daemon seems to be an extension of the self, your soul, and possibly represents your personality.

Libby1 Mine would definitely be a cat. Or a sloth! I wonder how many other fellow Littens would fit into these categories? 3y
