#Shero I can‘t imagine what it was like for her to know that 6 of her fellow justices basically crapped all over the 14th Amendment today. For her as a Latina woman to know the racism that is permeating in the halls of the Supreme Court. It‘s just sickening. #ranttime

#ranttime ugh, I mean seriously. How to say you‘re racist without explicitly stating you‘re a racist. Someone on Threads was saying we all need to go around shouting our old high school Spanish phrases to confuse them. Listened on audio, narrated by the author. I always enjoy listening to these retelling of women in Greek mythology. I always love how sometimes as Haynes is reading she sounds like an exhausted woman, like seriously why are we still having to fight these fights…like a majority of women do. My mom & I went to the National Bool Festival in DC today. It was our first time going. It was amazing but a bit overwhelming. We walked around some, bought a ton of books. I was able to get a book signed by Joy Harjo, which was amazing. I had hoped to get more books signed but my mom was done earlier than expected. Still a good day, not sure if huge book festivals are my thing.

“Ableism robs us of our ability to see disabled possibilities, even ones that might be relatively small.” The book is an honest & brutal collection of essays about what it is like, particularly in the US, to live a disabled life. Ableism continues to be pervasive

Medical Terminology For Dummies | Beverley Henderson, Jennifer L. Dorsey

Someone learned a new science word & is flashing it around like he knows what it is. You can‘t see mitochondrial disorders. I don‘t know what he‘s trying to imply. Mitochondrial disorders are not very common (I worked with a handful of kids in early intervention that had these disorders & I worked with the medically complicated kids at Duke). I really wish the news would ask him to define what a mitochondrial challenge looks like. Also how

ncsufoxes creepy is it that he‘s eyeing children. Also how do you define healthy? You can‘t look at a child & determine if they‘re healthy or not. That is between the child, their parents/guardians & doctors…not you. I wouldn‘t say that he looks or sounds healthy, so he shouldn‘t be one to make judgments. #ranttime 2w

One of those books that is highly relevant to today & the continued fight for voting rights. The book tells the story of several key people that fought against racism & white supremacy to bring voting rights to Black citizens of SC. Their model was used throughout the south to enshrine voting rights that many were denied for too long. As we see with gerrymandering today, people who are in power are fearful when people can use their vote.

ncsufoxes The courts have recently struck down laws in Alabama, Mississippi, & Louisiana stating that they all have violated the Voting Rights Act (in particular limiting the vote of Black citizens). It is sad that people to this day still have to fight for their right to vote. This quote still rings true to this day, “Their real fear was that if Black people continued to register, they would soon outnumber white voters & would be able to decide elections.” 2w

I love listening to Stanley Tucci talk. I loved his story on getting kids ready. I feel the same way, why am I having to repeat the same thing every day, year after year. Update: we made it through our trip to Ohio with minimal MIL drama. My husband did find some closure since Lake Erie was a place that he spent a lot of time with his dad when he was younger. It was good to see family. My kids had fun going to Cedar Point. Other than my MIL handing me a pastry full of nuts (I have nut allergies, I‘ve know this woman for 30 years, you‘d think she‘d remember my life threatening allergy). Luckily I don‘t eat pastries.

ncsufoxes Other than her bringing a small amount of my FIL‘s ashes. Which my SIL said that she‘s saving them because she‘s hoping when she dies that her, my FIL, & her current husband‘s ashes can all be together (I wasn‘t privy to that odd statement). She also wants their ashes to all be interred together in her current husband‘s crypt (where is ex-wife is buried). That won‘t happen because her current husband is Catholic & she isn‘t. One of the rules 1mo
ncsufoxes Catholics are sticklers about…if you aren‘t Catholic you can‘t be buried in a Catholic crypt/cemetery. I also don‘t think she‘s informed his kids that those are her hopes (they wouldn‘t allow it). 1mo
AmyG As someone who had in-laws….ha, I SO get all of this (just from the Jewish side). Glad there was minimal drama. And the nut thing….the older people get, I think many become more self absorbed. “This word, hysteria, contains all the judgements and assumptions about female bodies that have existed for thousands of years.” Published in 2024, it‘s a good primer of gynecological health. The book covers basics to more complex concerns. The continued frustration that women‘s health concerns are still not taken seriously by some doctors. Women are still denied bodily autonomy & decisions regarding their gynecological health. Research is still

ncsufoxes vastly underfunded regarding women‘s health. It doesn‘t help that the current administration has severely hampered research for women. The book also discusses the past & current misconceptions & misperceptions of minority women. There is also a nice section about gender vs biological sex (many people don‘t understand the difference of biology vs societal norms). 1mo

Happy 101st birthday to James Baldwin. His work is still so relevant to today‘s world. “It is very nearly impossible to become an educated person in a country so distrustful of the independent mind.” “The purpose of education…is to create in a person the ability to look at the world for himself, to make his own decisions.”

“The challenge is in the moment; the time is always now.”

One positive for Friday, the Senate Appropriations Committee rejected the administration‘s request to slash the NIH budget by 40% (by 26-3). Instead they added an additional $400 million to the NIH budget: $100 million to Alzheimer‘s, $150 million to cancer research, & $30 million to the office for Research of Women‘s Health. This is a huge win (still a process, but it was bipartisan) for medical research.

ncsufoxes And my husband did find out today too that his lab is safe for now. Edited to add: my husband is a PI at NCI (he‘s actually a contractor but works at the NCI campus in Frederick). His research has direct impact on patients in NIH clinical trials. He has a contract for 5 years & his funding had already been paid out. But with pending funding changes some labs were being cut. Since his lab is new he was worried about their future. (edited) 1mo

On the Savage Side: A Novel | Tiffany McDaniel

Tiffany McDaniel is one of my absolute favorite authors & have been anticipating her next book after the tagged book. I‘m trying to keep an open mind but I‘m a little disappointed her next book is going to be horror. I‘m not a fan of horror books, so this is more of a me issue. I‘ll have to see. But I figured I‘d let others know that are fans of her work (she posted this on IG).

“The trick is to never lose hope.”-Tupac Shakur I really loved this look into Tupac‘s life. The book is more about how his experiences in his life shaped the artist that he became. His mom was a Black Panther & Tupac was raised in NYC area. He was exposed to the Black Panther Party & Young Lords that shaped his view of capitalism, racism, sexism, the police state. His music spoke out against the things he felt were harming people

ncsufoxes more than helping them. The book also highlights rap post Tupac. “The world has embraced Tupac as an icon of anti-establishment defiance, a cipher of self- determination who could speak truth to power with charisma and courage.” #antifabookclub @Chrissyreadit 1mo

“Happiness is so hard to come by. I don‘t understand why anyone would begrudge anyone else for managing to find some of it.” We watched the Sally Ride documentary on Disney+ & this story mirrored a lot of Sally‘s story. It definitely was all the 1980s vibes of the space program, smart women, the pushback on the LGBTQ+ community. Joan‘s sister was a bit much.

#wdncw that we are going to a memorial this weekend & none of us are wearing white. Backstory: my husband just found out last weekend in a text chain that he‘s in with his cousins/aunts/his mom that there is a memorial in Cedar Point, Ohio this weekend (we live jn MD). His mom called & told him about it. He said he wasn‘t sure about us going since it‘s so last minute. My MIL said she wasn‘t going & said his sister wasn‘t going either because she‘s

ncsufoxes He talked to his cousin & found out this memorial has been in the work for months…his mom never told us. The memorial is for his grandparents, 2 uncles, & his dad (my FIL passed away 8 years ago this week & my MIL never had a memorial & she remarried 3 years ago). His cousin said that his mom knew about this. So my husband told our kids that‘s it we‘re going. Then he talked to his sister & she said no ever told her. After my MIL found out we were 1mo
ncsufoxes going she has now decided to go. It has been a ridiculous fiasco. My MIL has been trying to put distance between my husband & his dad‘s family for the last few years (he is close to his aunts & cousins). My MIL has become more controlling & manipulative the last few years (she‘s also gone full maga). She lies to everyone around her. She‘s slowly destroying her relationship with her grandkids (my kids). I have set boundaries around her to 1mo

ncsufoxes @Karisa my FIL passed 8 years ago (the memorial is on his side of the family). His brother (my husband‘s uncle) passed 3 years ago. My husband‘s other uncle passed about 5 years ago. My husband‘s grandparents passed like 30+ years ago but the family never had a way to memorialize them/spread their ashes. As everyone is getting older it was a way to finally have some closure & do what they said they were going to do many years ago. 1mo
ncsufoxes @TheBookHippie luckily we get along with this side of the family. They all love my husband & have been so supportive of him over the years. When we lived in San Diego all his relatives on his dad‘s side came to see us. They‘re so incredibly proud of him. Whereas my MIL has never taken the time to understand what my husband does. He became an oncology research scientist because of his dad. His current work at NCI will have direct impact on patients 1mo

ncsufoxes @kspenmoll thanks, I sometimes think I‘m making things more dramatic in my mind. I‘m a kind, empathetic person but I‘ve lost all compassion for my MIL lately. I want my kids to have a good relationship with their grandmother. But I will not tolerate someone lying to them. My kids are 21, almost 16, & 10 they have started to realize she‘s not reliable. It‘s sad to watch her destroy her relationship but they‘re old enough to form their own opinion 1mo

#ranttime I‘m so f‘n livid. Being homeless is not a crime. Drug addiction is not a crime. Mental health is not a crime. The current administration has just lumped 3 different issues into one. Criminalizing people with mental health disorders just puts them more at risk for being put in jail. As a mom of 3 neurodivergent kids this is horrific. This is going to make people more fearful to call for assistance if a person is having a mental health

ncsufoxes emergency for fear that their loved one will be met with police violence or taken to jail. This puts young teens and adults with Autism & co-occurring conditions (there is a high rate of co-occurrence with things like anxiety, depression) at greater risk. Having access to trained mental health professionals & medication management is what people need. Not to be institutionalized or jailed. People need more resources & access, not this. 2mo

My kid is finally stable (after years of trying different combos, one combo that left him neutropenic during the pandemic). There is also a shortage of psychiatrists & psychologists in the US as it 2mo

I can‘t even begin to describe the bad doctors & unhelpful info we‘ve gotten over the years. There has been so much research into evidence based & community based treatments over the last few years. They are also 2mo

Deblovestoread Right on point! 🤬🤬🤬 2mo
Librarybelle Ugh 🤬 2mo
ncsufoxes @KadaGul the point too is that they want to criminalize people & have them sit in prison. Prisons are now privatized, many of our lawmakers get funded by groups that benefit from private prisons (our attorney generals family is owner of a company that builds ICE prisons). Private prisons can charge the govt tons of money. There are too many people with mental health conditions in the general prison population & get denied meds. Not to mention 2mo
ncsufoxes there are almost 800,000 homeless people in this country (that‘s the best estimate by advocacy groups). The numbers only going to grow with loss of jobs, rising costs, cuts to Veterans services, cuts to Section 8 housing. Our country has over 4 million people in the prison system (on bail, in jail, on parole). It‘s higher than any other nation. Now they‘re giving the green light to increase those numbers. For this false narrative of 2mo
ncsufoxes characterizing people in these groups as dangerous. It‘s again another horrific policy that will make things worse. 2mo
KadaGul Our criminal system was never meant to punish a criminal. It is designed to put shackles on a group of people they don't like. If it were meant for criminals, our crime rate wouldn't be where it is today. 2mo
Eggbeater Hearing this was traumatic. 2mo
Billypar Yeah, you're 100% right. It's a nonstop trainwreck. My almost 10 year old really liked the book. She liked learning about Willa‘s struggles with Sensory Processing Disorder (her Autistic brother has SPD & it helped her understand him). The story is told from Willa‘s perspective. I am a little more critical than my daughter, so it‘s a low pick for me. I do feel that representation matters & there needs to be more stories for kids about all kinds of disorders & disabilities. But…

ncsufoxes I also feel that this story is written from someone with privilege. Many kids do not get to see an OT just for SPD. SPD is not a medical diagnosis & it‘s difficult to get OT paid for through your insurance (depends on your insurance too). My son did have OT & some of his therapy focused on his SPD but he was found to have motor delays which allowed him to qualify for therapy. In the book Willa gets OT twice a week, meaning her parents are able to 2mo
ncsufoxes afford the out of pocket cost. Many families can‘t afford that. Which kids reading this might wonder why they can‘t get the same therapy that Willa finds so helpful. I wish every kid with SPD had better access to therapy, it is very beneficial. We were very lucky to have great therapists over the years to provide us with access & info. Therapists are also stretching the lines sometimes in order to help families but they are very limited. Not every 2mo
ncsufoxes therapist has the same views. We had one therapist with one medical group flat out say our son didn‘t need anything (as he was sensory seeking & running circles around the clinic, this was over a few “consultation” sessions). 2mo
IriDas I agree about the place of privilege. It is frustrating when books present the ability to access services as a thing easily attained. So many of them do not present the fight parents have to engage in just to try to get services. 2mo
