Tonight for our #fridaynightshare I am reading Savannah Cats. It‘s is my husband‘s book. He has long been fascinated by all cats & became intrigued with Savanna cats. #midwintersolace #naturalitsy #week7 #nonfiction #animal

TheBookHippie We had one of those at our tiny city zoo one town over and we loved it, it recently died and we were so sad. I think it was over 20 years old. 3mo
kspenmoll @TheBookHippie I have never seen a living Savannah cat. How sad he died. (edited) 3mo

This week's section went into some detail about at least two of Jim's films. What was the purpose of including this detail? Discuss what we learned about these two films. How might the plot of each film be related to either political events or plot themes?

Mtroiano The film that was just a camera projecting the audience fits in with the theme of self-centeredness. It reminded me of the section about video chat. 7y
LeahBergen I think "The Joke" (by it's very name) may end up having something to do with Infinite Jest (the title and the film). It may also be referencing the "American" obsession with self and the pursuit of pleasure that DFW seems to be using as a theme here. 7y
LeahBergen The audience that turns to stone while viewing The Medusa vs The Odalisque is suspiciously like the fate of the victims of "the Entertainment". 7y

JenP Also, I'm wondering if the Medusa is (represents) Joelle and the Odalisque is Avril. Both beautiful, one Canadian, one US also representing the conflict between Canada and US in over the concavity. 7y
britt_brooke @Mtroiano That one reminded me of the mirror on the highway, too. 7y
LeahBergen @JenP Oh, yes. Good one! 7y
LeahBergen @britt_brooke I forgot about that mirror! 7y
LeahBergen I just wanted to add here - this week had one of the funniest bits for me. We finally got to see the evolution of the ad agencies into sponsored time with that series of hellacious commercials. I laughed out loud at the description of the actors in the NoCoat tongue scraper ads and the "near geologic layer of gray-white material coating the tongue..." ?? @JenP @britt_brooke 7y
britt_brooke @LeahBergen Those parts were hilarious! 7y
AshleyHoss820 I know we were talking about Himself's films, but I thought Mario's puppet reenactment of his father's film was quite genius and endearing! 7y
Pippitypip Both films were about the audience. They get turned into stone or gems, one by one, in the Medusa versus the Odalisque. Why do I think of readers giving up on reading IJ here? They have the camera turned on themselves in The Joke. Do you think that DFW is giving us a clue that he was very aware of his readers when he wrote IJ? 7y
JenP @Pippitypip interesting, I think you are right 7y

You've spent a week with your buddy. How do you think your character fits into infinite Jest? What is his or her role and how does s/he illustrate certain themes?

If you didn't pick a buddy this week, pick any character and answer this question for that character.

Mtroiano My buddy is Hal. I think Hal represents youth and the infinite possibilities associated with youth. Scenes go in an out of a drug rehab and AA meetings with horror stories of lives gone wrong. On p. 395 Hal is described as being genetically hard wired for a secret drug problem. Will he grow up to be successful and well adjusted or will drug addiction end up ruling his life? 7y
Currey I believe the role of Ken Erdeddy was just to introduce us to the world of Substance Abuse in a personal way. It would have been more difficult to grasp if we had started with Kathy G. or Gately perhaps. 7y
LeahBergen I think that Joelle's role (thus far) has been that of a bridge/link between characters and two of the main settings (ETA and Ennet House). 7y
See All 7 Comments
britt_brooke I think Orin's role is to really help us learn more about Hal through their phone conversations. He also provides a needed break from tennis, and he was the first to bring the PGOAT into the fold. 7y
Hooked_on_books I think Pemulis is the id of the book. He has this joyous, childish personality and doesn't seem to care about consequences. If Hal is too succeed in life, he needs to resist the allure of Pemulis which, based on the first chapter, I don't think he does. 7y
Pippitypip Mario is the thoughtful one, always attending to the needs of others. His puppet parody, made when he was still a kid, was a biting satire of the Gentle administration. Its intention was an entertainment for children, but it is so popular at ETA that it is shown every year on Interdependance Day at the evening banquet. If anyone needs to know what is going on they just need to ask Mario. As well as being a skillful cinematographer, he is observant (edited) 7y
Kristelh I have a hard time picking any of these characters as a buddy but decided to go with Don Gately as his world might be closer to one I can relate to in real life. I do like Mario. I think he is the most humane of all the characters. I find very little to like about the rest of the characters. So far none of the female characters are very enticing. 7y

Time for our monthly check in to see who is still with us. I've noticed what seems to be a second wave of disappearances. some previously familiar faces have been missing lately. So if you have dropped let us know and tell us why. If you are still with us, tell us why too. Soon our first prize will be raffled off to those who make it pst the halfway mark

BookishTrish I've dropped out without noticing that I've done so. Life has been positively mental this March - mostly in a good way - but the timing is off for me to tackle this bad boy. I enjoy reading everyone else's progress! 7y
Mtroiano I'm still here! I had a rough week last week and wasn't able to participate but I'm ready this week! 7y
JenP @Mtroiano sorry to hear you had a rough week last week. I hope this week is much better for you and glad you're still with us 7y

JenP @BookishTrish I suspect that several others have done the same - drop out without quite realizing they have bailed. Timing can be everything for this sort of book so hopefully you find a better time for it in the future. 7y
JenP I am obviously still here. As the person who organized the buddy read it would probably be poor form if I bailed 😂😂. However I do love the book and am really enjoying reading along with all of you. I also have a compulsion to finish a book once I've started it so any way you look at it, I'm here until the end 7y
AshleyHoss820 I'm still here!! ? I was far behind because we're planning to move this summer and we're painting/packing/updating the house! I'm all caught up now and I am really digging the book! Everyone was right, you really gotta dig in and make it past the 200-page mark! It also helps to keep notes. I've been drawing a little spider & a little tooth when he mentions them and some other recurrences as well! (CT initials, "sch" names, the color green...) 7y
JenP @AshleyHoss820 I'm so glad you are liking it and happy that you are still with us and eager to move forward! 7y
britt_brooke 🙋🏼 Still here, still loving it! 7y
Simona I'm still in the game and I'm still not sure if I like the story, but I absolutely enjoy in the reading experience. During the week, I rarely comment and participate in debate (partly because I do my weekly dose of the reading over the weekend, partly because - story is on a certain level too foreign for me and I don't understand all the references from American culture/life). But I read all the comments! Thank you for your effort 🙏 7y
JenP @Simona glad to hear you are enjoying the experience. Also feel free to ask if you have any questions about American concepts or cultural references. We are all here to help. Likewise the Canadians in our group can help with Canadian references many of us will not get. 7y
Currey Still here and enjoying the buddy read of it 7y
LeahBergen Still here and still enjoying myself immensely! 7y
JenP @Desha @CareBear @SarahK @sisilia @Bloomingjen @mjdowens @Velvetsun @reneelyons are you all still with us or did you throw in the towel? Apologies if I have already asked you or your answered this question elsewhere. Let us know if you're still reading! 7y
CareBear I threw in the towel 😕 I'm hoping I try again one day but it felt like work rather than enjoyment. I've been following all of everyone else's progress though! 7y
JenP @CareBear thanks for letting us know. Sorry it didn't work for you. 7y
Kristelh I am way behind but still reading and hoping to get caught up. 7y
Velvetsun I'm still plugging along. Struggling a bit, so I've been quiet, but I'm trying to focus on the positive things about the book instead of the aspects that aren't working for me. 7y
JenP @Velvetsun let us know when you struggle since I'm sure we'd all be happy to provide encouragement. I hope that there are more things you enjoy than negative aspects. 7y
reneelyons I'm still here, but am waaaay behind. I'm still reading it but am struggling with the pace a bit since I am reading so many other books along with it. I need complete quiet for this book, which I rarely have between work and my kids! I've never really experienced this before, I can usually read in total chaos! 7y
Desha @JenP I'm still here but way behind...very much a 🐢! I've been having some issues with my lung issues. The book for me requires a lot of effort (I know I could skip a lot of my extra effort) but I'm enjoying it and the research! Thanks so much for keeping us all going! ☺👍🏻❤📚 7y
SarahK 😐I just wasn't feeling it. But I am trucking right along with #Marchmadness 7y
JenP @SarahK sounds good 7y
JenP @reneelyons it can be hard if you have no quiet place or time to read it. I'm glad you're still with us and hopefully you find some way to set aside quiet time for reading it 7y
JenP @Desha oh no, are you okay? I hope you're feeling okay. Slow is perfectly fine. I'm glad you're still with us in reading it but more importantly glad you are enjoying it 7y
Bloomingjen @jenp I am still here! I am on pg 392 so only a little behind. i lost my link to the google form so I cant update anymore but I think i am going to be behind for a couple of weeks because of work. Last week and most of this week have been disappointing story-wise to me but I am hopeful that it gets back on track. 7y
Hooked_on_books I'm still here! 🙋🏼It's my Mt Everest at this point. I will summit! I am enjoying parts of the book (other parts less so), and really enjoying the buddy read aspect of it. 7y
Desha @JenP I'm hanging in there thanks for asking ☺it's a daily struggle 😥but I have books ❤📚👍🏻 7y
Spiderfelt I'm still here. I read ahead, and now have to catch up. The week is too busy for participating in much of the daily discussion, but I love reading both the posts and the book on the weekend. 7y
Pippitypip I am still with you. I am up-to-date on Audible, but feel the need to read before I comment and I am still in Week 6 for that! 7y
Kristelh I finished through page 418 so far and still working at catching up. ToB got in the way and not sure how April will play out. I am currently at 40% read. I find it a struggle when there is no many other 📚 I would rather read. 7y
