The Shepherd's Crown | Terry Pratchett
post image

From today's Discworld Emporium's Newsletter:

THE SHEPHERD'S CROWN TURNED 10!
The final Discworld book is now a decade old. All these years later, the understandable reluctance to read it can be felt as strongly now as it did that dreadful year when Terry died, and the Shepherd's Crown was published. For many fans it has remained an unread treasure in order to hold back the end and keep the turtle moving.⬇️

#Discworld #OokBOokClub

julesG With that in mind, Rob Wilkins had a few words to mark the anniversary and encourage the bravery required to finish the final chapter . . .⬇️ 1w
julesG "It‘s been ten years since the publication of The Shepherd‘s Crown, the last book Terry Pratchett completed before he died. Once the spine on this one was cracked, there were no more new Pratchetts to look forward to, and I know a lot of Discworld readers who were, understandably, with that sad reality in mind, reluctant to finish - or even start - this one because it felt like the final closing of a door.⬇️ 1w
julesG But I also know that Terry wanted his books to be read and enjoyed far more than he wanted them kept on a shelf. And as time passes it becomes ever more apparent how much the Discworld books reward re-visiting, perpetually revealing something new, literary gems Terry had hidden away for a second or third, or even more, re-read. Every Pratchett is to some degree an unread Pratchett, including the ones you‘ve already enjoyed and including ⬇️ 1w

julesG The Shepherd‘s Crown.
So the greatest way to honour Terry‘s legacy is to pull that book you‘ve been saving off the shelf, make a nice cup of tea and settle down to read the story he wrote for you. Enjoy."

julesG Wow, you jumped in in the middle of a subseries. 👍 1w
Suzie @julesG Well, yes. I read the first one some time ago, so I already had a good understanding of the witches and Tiffany...not to mention the Nac Mac Feegles 3d
julesG Ah, I thought you hadn't read the other before. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 3d

#bookspin I love the witches - such great satire, and actually some really thought provoking moments. It feels bittersweet to be closing in on the final Discworld book…

I love these Tiffany Aching books. This is the 5th and final book. The last book he ever wrote, actually. In this they do battle with the elves. I love the wee free men also.

These are a cute subset of the witch storyline. Tiffany is a fierce YA protagonist.

#doublespin LOVED this! I think the Tiffany Aching books might be my new favourites in Discworld. Granny Weatherwax is an utter legend and the Nac Mac Feegle are blooming hilarious
