Pickpick

This book, published in 1688, is brutal, by a woman “often cited as the first known professional female writer.” Prince Oroonoko‘s betrothed is sold into slavery. Then he is tricked by an evil English slave trader and sold into slavery. Shipped to #Suriname, he finds his lover owned by the same master. Initially treated well because of his royalty, he is betrayed again. So he kills his love, and himself in the most gruesome of ways. All of this ⬇️

Texreader in the summary, so no spoilers. But that‘s the entire story. Beautiful imagery of the country, Behn is a lovely writer. I‘m trying to decide if she was opposed to slavery. Some times she seems to excuse it, but given the brutality of the story I tend to think she very much opposed it. A hard but short read. Prepare yourself accordingly if you decide to read it. #readingtheAmericas 5mo

My next audiobook for #Suriname for #ReadingtheAmericas

This is one of the 3 countries I have left for this challenge.

Despite being one of the books I was more intrigued about from the NBA translated literature list (plus, it made the shortlist), this just didn‘t do anything for me. It tended to jump around in a way I didn‘t like, I didn‘t care for the writing, and it didn‘t have a strong sense of place in #Suriname.

#ReadingAmericas2023

Librarybelle That‘s a shame! 6mo
BarbaraBB I remember feeling that way too when I read it, but that was ages ago. I hoped it would have gained relevance in the mean time but I do doubt that now. 6mo
Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB I feel like some of the topics covered were really worthwhile, but it just didn‘t really work. I‘m disappointed to see it on the short list. 6mo

It‘s the most wonderful week of the year: the release of the National Book Award longlists! 🥳🎉🎊 Above is translated lit, which you can read more about here: https://www.nationalbook.org/2023-national-book-awards-longlist-for-translated-l...

Plus, the tagged is set in Suriname, which I need for #ReadingAmericas2023. Bonus! Tomorrow, the nonfiction list (probably my favorite)!

BarbaraBB Thanks! Diving into it! 7mo
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen You were looking for some good NF right? See Holly‘s post! (edited) 7mo
BarbaraBB The Astrid Roemer one is an oldie, it was published in the Netherlands in 1982! 7mo
Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB Clearly it has stood the test of time! I love when a book can make an impact so many years later for whatever reason, in this case because it‘s finally been translated. 7mo

A timely post from the British Museum about a woman well before her time documenting insects in #Surinam from 1699-1701. #readingtheamericas

Last list of the night, I promise! I‘ve made myself a list of possible books to find to complete a couple of challenges, #readingtheamericas and #authoramonth

See any you particularly recommend? Do you recommend any other books for these countries? They‘re on this list because I don‘t have a book yet for that country, or for Salmon Rushdie

Ruthiella I‘ve heard good things about 1y
squirrelbrain I‘ve just read The Library of Ice and loved it. Wild Coast was OK and covered 3 countries. 1y
rwmg I've only read two of them, “Wide Sargasso Sea“ and “An African in Greenland“, both of which I would recommend 1y

#readingtheamericas

This was a pick, but only just. Some parts were fascinating but I loved the shortest section, on #frenchguiana most, followed by #suriname and then #guyana, which was much more than half of the book.

The author wrote everything in the present tense, but jumped around chronologically so it was very difficult to follow.

Quadruple dipping again!

Bluebird Great job on choosing books that fit so many challenges. I love your penguin books collection. I was so sad when they changed their covers.. 1y
squirrelbrain @bluebird - I think it‘s much easier at the start of challenges; it‘ll get more difficult the less choice I have. 1y

Of course, I‘m being greedy and having three books as my #lastfirst!

I‘ve just finished book 200 for the year (My Monticello) which means I can‘t possibly finish any more in 2022-need to have a tidy number!

I started listening to Demon a few days ago, Wild Coast will be my first for #readingtheamericas2023 and I‘ll start The Violin Conspiracy for some fiction. As long as I finish them in 2023 then they‘ll all count for next year‘s challenges!

squirrelbrain Thanks for hosting such a fun challenge, Kristen - I always love seeing everyone‘s posts! 1y
BookNAround Haha! I love that you have three. 1y

We Slaves of Suriname | Anton de Kom

Mehso-so

This book is a charge against Holland. And rightly so. My country has abused its power in a scandalous way. Suriname was a Dutch colony where slavery was everywhere until 1863. After that circumstances remained poor for the native population until independence. It‘s a shame how little we still know about this part of our history if you‘re not actively looking for it.

The book itself though is dryly written and it was hard to follow along.

Cinfhen Cool use for #CreateYourOwnPrompt 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 2y
TrishB I don‘t think you‘re alone in their country abusing it‘s power ☹️ 2y

#WeeklyForecast 06/22

In the middle of Book 2 from To Paradise and still loving all characters and storylines. The book may ruin all my original plans: to read the tagged book for my new IRL bookclub, one for the #ToB2022 and the Strout for #ReadingAfrica2022. Let‘s see how far I‘ll get!

Cinfhen I‘ve read 3/4 of your books and really enjoyed them all!!! Looks like you have a great week of reading 💜💜 2y
Cathythoughts Im looking forward to To Paradise 👍🏻 2y
