The Lost Man | Jane Harper

Last book read by this author until she writes another novel. I could say this was my least favorite amongst her novels. Maybe was that ending😳🤷🏽‍♀️ However, I like how she describes characters and places, very atmospheric. You feel that hot weather 🥵. I think the book blurb is prefect to describes the story: “three brothers, one death, no answers”👌 3.5/3.8⭐️

Catching up posting March reads today! This was the only Jane Harper I hadn't read, so it was my #AuthorAMonth selection for March. It had all the atmospheric qualities that Harper's books usually have, this one's landscape being remote, barren, hot, dry, and unforgiving. The characters were well drawn, and the mystery was engaging as usual. @Soubhiville

Mehso-so

I think I'm in the minority here, but this one just wasn't for me, despite having really enjoyed some of Harper's other books. This story was just relentlessly depressing. With a strong focus on abuse and how that reverberates through a family even when the abuser is gone, plus some bonus content regarding rape, divorce, community ostracizing, depression, suicide, isolation, etc. I was just honestly sad the entire time I was reading this. ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) I did really care about these characters and there is a (mostly) happy ending, but it was a long slog through a morass of sadness to get there. Plus, while I was interested to find out what happened to Cam, this book wasn't particularly suspenseful. It's really about a sad, lonely, depressed man trying to make sense of his life and figure out what happened to his brother. Not a bad story, but not remotely a nail-biter. 1mo
Yuki_Onna Oh my... How brave of you to get through this!👏 1mo
Lauredhel I hear that -- I really struggle to read grim books these days. 1mo

I do enjoy Jane Harper's Australian outback thrillers. They never end the way I think they will. #AuthorAMonth @Soubhiville

CatLass007 This one definitely had a surprise ending! I thought it was an excellent book. 1mo
bookandbedandtea I love all her books but this one is my favorite. 1mo

Cameron, middle son of the Bright family in the far far outback, is found dead miles from his well-stocked truck. It looks like an unpleasant suicide but why end it this way? His older brother Nathan, the town outcast for many years, has his own demons but manages to slowly put unusual pieces of information together to find out what happens—and it truly is a surprise! I did feel like things ended a little too well, everyone‘s problems solved. ⬇️

CatLass007 What happens really is a surprise. 1mo
Texreader I tried reading The Dry at the same time as this one and that was a no-go. Too many similarities. Outcasts trying to figure out apparent suicides. It turns out the books have a tenuous connection that really threw me for a loop—causing such confusion! So I put this one down and finished The Dry first. This was a much slower read than The Dry and until a child in the story spoke up revealing a deeper mystery, I struggled to keep my attention. ⬇️ 1mo
Texreader But the ending is such a surprise it absolutely saved the entire book. #authoramonth #readingOceania #Australia 1mo

Susanita It was fascinating to learn about how people live in the Outback, such as the grocery delivery and the generator. 1mo
Texreader @Susanita And that the outback is a character as well, how it can kill so quickly!! 1mo

Started reading this book this morning. I really want to keep reading instead of getting to work, as it has been pretty awful lately, but alas, I have a bunch of meetings that are starting soon. Not enough coffee in the world for the day I'm about to have.

Best drawing win ever! Thank you @Soubhiville !! I‘m so thrilled to have won the #authoramonth drawing! I never dreamed I‘d get two books for our authors this year, much less a third from my tbr list (which I‘m very excited to get)! These all look great! Thank you!

Soubhiville I can‘t believe how fast shipping was, I just dropped these by media mail on Thursday. You‘re welcome, I hope you‘ll enjoy them! 3mo
CoverToCoverGirl The Lost Man is as good as The Dry. You‘re in for a very solid read. 🙂 And so is the Troublesome Creek book. I‘m reading Blacktop Wasteland by Cosby now, it‘s outstanding so far. He sure can craft an edge of your seat story! (edited) 3mo
