Pickpick

A 22-hour audiobook about the social/political movement needed to save the planet's ecosystem via strategies that redistribute the world's wealth to those who've been denied it is a tough sell, and so I've enlisted my mom's cardboard cutout of The Boss to help me. He's sporting the wristband I got at the #noDAPL protest. Mr. Springsteen did not give me permission to use his likeness. Available on #Libby and wherever #audiobooks are sold.

RaimeyGallant Shout out to @leahroserng for adding this to her stack. You're my hero! 6y
RaimeyGallant @kathywheeler wins for my second favorite Litten of the day with @Sjhaug sliding into third! 6y

Alberta Oil and the Decline of Democracy in Canada | Meenal Shrivastava, Lorna Stefanick
post image

This is my first post in a daily series #todayinsj where I'll feature news or history on social justice, and tying it to a book that relates to the issue.

Today Trump signed to go forward with the keystone and Dakota access pipelines. This image from NBC shows a protestor at DAPL facing the police.

Tagging this book, which I haven't read, but looks like a really interesting look at how this has affected our neighbors to the north.

Hestapleton Looking forward to these. 7y
8little_paws Thanks @Hehaney going to give it a shot. Not sure how long I'll do it for, a few months, a year? Till I run out of books? 7y
Hestapleton @8little_paws I appreciate that it isn't just ranting, but seems focused on broadening understanding of the political issues we're facing. :) I think it's gonna be great; no matter how long it lasts. 7y

mllemay Great project! I'll be on the lookout for your posts. Information/knowledge is power, especially in the years to come... (edited) 7y
LindsayReads Not related to this book per se, but at this point it looks like removing support from the banks financing the DAPL--that is, moving your money elsewhere--will send a strong message to those institutions (and to tell them so): http://www.yesmagazine.org/people-power/how-to-contact-the-17-banks-funding-the-... 7y
8little_paws @LindsayReads great info, Lindsay! A great place to move your money is to a local credit union! I've been at one for nearly 10 years now and love it. I also pulled all my business money (about $10M revenues annually) to a local bank as well. 7y
LindsayReads It's at the top of my to-do list once I move. My car loan is through one, and I love them. I haven't heard a single negative thing from people who use them. #NoDAPL!! 7y
rachellayown I'm looking forward to your posts. I am so utterly heartbroken over the DAPL. 7y

Wenjack | Joseph Boyden
post image

Joseph Boyden and Kent Monkman, two highly talented Native artists, team up for this little powerhouse of a book about Chanie Wenjack, the Ojibwe boy who escaped from a Residential school and died trying to walk home. One terribly tragic story in the long and ongoing history of colonialism and genocide. #Nativebooks #decolonize #noDAPL

And now for some good news. I'm #thankfulfor the water protectors.

And yes, I own this book. 175 pages of life-saving wisdom! I have witnessed many patients cure their cancer with an alkaline diet under the direction of my nutritionist. She sells this book in her office. 🍍🍋🌱

#Thankfulfor a cozy, quiet spot to read this topical and relevant novel after a long, busy, lovely day. #HappyThanksgiving #PhotoadayNov16

Though I relish this holiday because time with my family and food, I completely recognize it's ugly, ugly, roots. I sent up a prayer for all who lost their lives in the name of colonialism and all those who continue that fight in the present. #StandingRock #NODAPL

As many know, a false narrative of #Thanksgiving is told that erases Native genocide & valorizes colonists. Spend time w/your family, but I also I encourage you to learn more about it, reflect on settler privilege, & support Native ppl & causes.

These books are a great start, incl. one by Sarah Deer, a former prof of mine. The #StandingRockSyllabus is great too: http://tinyurl.com/jmth5jc. I also gave $ to thank #NoDAPL water protectors. ✊🏼

BooksForEmpathy Thank you! 7y
BookInMyHands I also love this blog by Debbie Reese about Native Americans in youth literature. I've learned so much from it: https://americanindiansinchildrensliterature.blogspot.com/?m=1 7y
BookishFeminist @BookInMyHands Debbie Reese is great! I also follow her on Twitter. I don't recommend Native books for kids or youth unless she has. She's such a gift & wish more folks stocked their school libraries with her insight! 7y
Mimi28 I am interested in learning more about what the Native Americans went through for " Thanksgiving " 7y
AliBG Thank you for this list. 7y
BeththeBookDragon My husband and I had a conversation about this yesterday. Our kids are 5 and 7, and it's hard to know how much and what of the truth to tell them when. 7y
Godmotherx5 Thanks for the book suggestions & the links. 7y
EchoLogical @bethfriedman906 I have a 6 year old and struggled with the same problem. As it stands, we've only discussed the standard narrative given in school. I think when she's a little older we'll discuss the true origins 7y
BookishFeminist @bethfriedman906 @CraZyBookLady518 Yea, it's difficult with children. I think there's a way to tell kids however without getting into gorey details. If you guys are interested at all, @TheNextBook recommended a book above for kids that might be a good thing to read with kids & @BookInMyHands recommended a blog by Debbie Reese that solely focuses on Natives in kids & YA lit, a rec I wholeheartedly second—she does a great job handling difficult ... 7y
BookishFeminist @bethfriedman906 @CraZyBookLady518 ... narratives involving Natives and their representation in kids lit. She has a ton of resources & I'd be really surprised if she didn't have stuff about Thanksgiving that would be appropriate for kids since a lot of the details are definitely difficult to handle. Best to you both ❤️ I'm glad you're both aware of the real narrative & want to educate your kids about it! You're great parents :) 7y
BookishFeminist @Mimi28 If you're unfamiliar with the story behind Thanksgiving, here's a great article that touches on the major points that led to the tradition: https://www.manataka.org/page269.html -the short story is that it started when settlers raided and massacred Pequot Indians in Massachusetts & had a feast to celebrate, so it's a difficult thing to read about. 7y
BookishFeminist @TheNextBook You're welcome & great additions! Esp the kids book since I know so many struggle with how to discuss this story with children. 7y
BookishFeminist @OSChamberlain @InLibrisVeritas @BooksForEmpathy @AliBG @Godmotherx5 Thanks! And you're welcome 💓 Such a dark time in history that is hard but important to unlearn how we're taught about it. 7y
Mimi28 @BookishFeminist Thanks for the article. I honestly couldn't read all of it because it made me so angry. Another cover-up in American history, such a shame. I will never look at Thanksgiving the same way again. Thanks for opening my eyes with this very informative and raw article 👍😊 7y
BookishFeminist @Mimi28 You're welcome- it's astonishing how much is done to suppress the truth of what happened. I have a hard time reading about it as well bc I'm furious over it. Just more reason to keep disseminating the real story to spread its importance. It's the least we can all do! (edited) 7y
WordWaller Thanks for this. Spent Thanksgiving day reading Lakota Woman and talking life things over with friends. 7y

vivastory @Owlizabeth Good! Good luck with the holidays. Making it through will be a major victory. (Only a smoker understands the perfection of an after dinner cigarette.) It sounds cliche but it is definitely worth quitting. 7y

The documentaries mentioned in my last post and some more reads. Some of these books are more academic (which brings its own issues) but they all deal more with land rights and sovereignty, for anyone interested in #noDAPL 👍🏼 #overthis

Little late to the game but I wanted to contribute something to the #overthis tag. These are all about Indigenous history & issues. Indigenous people in North America don't recognize the Canadian-American border (this is why saying "Native American or Native Canadian" earns some side eye) but I've limited it to a small selection from [mostly] US-based writers. I also made a list of documentaries if anyone is interested #diversebooks #nativereads

BookishMarginalia Thanks! I would love to know your documentary list too! 7y
BookishFeminist Thank you! I've read several of these and really liked them. Winona LaDuke is great. Also perfect for #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth. Already including a list Native section on the syllabus, especially things that focus on sovereignty & that will educate ppl about #nodapl, so this is great! 7y
teebe @BookishMarginalia I'll add it and tag you! @BookishFeminist awesome! It's all connected anyway but I know of some others that are more closely related to that. 7y
