When Stars Are Scattered | Victoria Jamieson

When Stars are Scattered is about two young boys who live in a refugee camp after escaping the war in Somalia. They have to grow up in the camp separated from their family and are awaiting being chosen to relocate safely to North America. I would recommend reading this story to upper elementary grades. It was published in 2020 and won the National Book Award.

This is a staggering, challenging, beautiful book and one of the best I‘ve read in a long time. Seeking to rescue her father, Aisha risks the sea with little skill and no knowledge of the dangers. Guided by a cat, she faces three monsters. On her return she must choose the life others want for her, or to seek the promised House of Rust.

“Her destiny stretched before her. And eager, and afraid, and whole of heart, she went to meet it.”

This is a quiet little book set in Kenya. We get a look at the life of Mr. Malik and his friends. They are trying to solve a decades-old murder, save their club and the local newspaper, and prepare for Mr. Malik's daughter's wedding. It all comes together quite nicely and I wish the author had written more books. #NovelNovember #ReadingAfrica2022 @Andrew65 @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

This book seemed promising: a diary is found in the 80s that harkens back to colonial times along the Kenya/Tanzania border and the interplay of European, Indian, and African cultures. And in places, I was invested. But most of this was a slog that I only finished so I could check off #Tanzania. 🤷🏼‍♀️

If you've ever since the film with Ralph Fiennes & Rachel Weisz, then you'll pretty much have the gist of what happens. If you haven't - then please watch it, it's a great film. There are one or two glaring differences between the book & the film but the main characters of Justin & Tessa were played pretty much spot on by Fiennes & Weisz, & the ending was kept true to the book. (Continued)

OutsmartYourShelf The book itself could have been about 100 pages shorter & probably would have been the better for it........Overall, good but characters a bit too loquacious, 3🌟

Trying to catch up on some reviews. I read this a few weeks ago for #foodandlit #kenya. Recommended by @TheBookHippie , it is a heartwarming, true story of a Masai village who bestows a gift of fourteen cows to the American people, grieving the September 11 attacks. Beautiful illustrations. It is a children‘s picture book, but this adult found it very moving.
“To the Masai, the cow is life.” #readingafrica #kenya

DivineDiana @thebookhippie And I never would have found it without you! I returned it to the Library yesterday, and shared it with a Librarian who had not heard of it. As it turned out, she had worked in Kenya while in college and had visited a Masai village. She immediately checked it out! She plans to share with her sisters this weekend who also visited Kenya! Thank you so much! ❤️ 2mo

Sigh. It‘s time to be honest with myself and admit that I am not enjoying this book. It‘s a classic that‘s been on my TBR for ages, but the writing style is not doing it for me. There are some excellent descriptions of African landscapes, but there‘s no real sense of a story here. It‘s just random observations about people and events. All of the colonialist and racist elements are also getting to me. Hibernating this one for now 🐻 #1001books

Ann_Reads In this case, I think the movie was better than the book. 2mo

Beautiful book about Mama Miti, a woman who helped other women and families by planting trees and sharing knowledge about trees.
