So many weeds are actually edible, like dock, careless weed, black nightshade, kudzu, and bastard cabbage.
This illustrated book goes over the harvest and preparation for each plant in great detail.

Yesterday I was watching a red-crested cardinal scavenging outside the coffee shop & it reminded me of one that hung out in another coffee shop & would fly in daily & grab a sugar-in-the-raw pack, fly back outside & open it up & share with friends. (Excuse the bad photo!) He‘s the inspiration for today‘s haiku.
Red-Crested Cardinals
Bold red mohawks fly
Scavenging with bright-eyed flair
Cheeky sugar thieves
I am, as Mrs Bookwomble put it, identifying the fuck out of these bees! 🐝🔍🤓
This is a Garden Bumblebee. Other visitors to the flowering shrub in our back garden have been the Honeybee, of course, a Common Carder Bee and a Red-tailed Bumblebee. The tagged guide has 28 of the most common of the ~250 British bee species, and it's enriching my lazy day in the sun 🌞
Also had a few Common Blue butterflies for variety 🦋
I love finding watermarks! I hauled this book recently and, beyond the well-written descriptions and plates which will be an excellent birding resource, I was thrilled to find this watermark for Warren‘s Olde Style. A quick search uncovers that this was a line from S.D. Warren Company, Boston. The official description, taken from an advertising digest I found online is, “a watermarked antique finish for type and line illustration.” Cool!
This book has been an interesting addition to my recent bird-watching frenzy. It‘s the kind of thing that I probably won‘t read straight through but it makes a great reference. It covers 25 common birds and gives an accessible profile of behaviors relating to territory, courtship, nesting, breeding, plumage, seasonal movement, and social behavior. I have gained a new appreciation for many of the birds in my local area already. ⬇️
It is our last #fridaynightshare for #midwintersolace I can‘t wait to see tha nature books chosen.
We got more snow overnight, turning our birdfeeders into ice, snow, and icicle art. Looking forward to a morning spent reading. ❄️😊
Is it weird that I felt bad for the birds after a while? The premise is catchy, but swearing and making deprecating remarks as a thin veil over providing facts about different birds gets old after a while. Might be an obvious point, but, I think if, unlike me, you're actually looking for a bird guide, there are better out there. As a comic exercise, this wore thin. And the inexplicable section on extinct birds was just depressing. 🤷🏼♂️
Trash talk all he wants, author couldn't help but sketch this 'lil dude in all its adorable-ness.
