Green Island: A novel | Shawna Yang Ryan

Pickpick

I knew nothing about the history of Taiwan before reading this book.

In Green Island, the story of a country is told alongside the story of a family.

This was the "blind date with a book" that my daughter in law gifted me earlier this month. I probably would have never picked it up on my own, but am very glad I read it.

**Side note - my Dodgers are struggling tonight

Jess861 Such a good book! 2d

My sweet DIL got me a blind date with a book!

I'm kicking myself for tearing into it before taking a picture, but I did my best to recreate it 😄

I had never heard of this book, but it's got 100% here on Litsy!

#JulyJazz Day 25: Last year I visited the Philippine booth which proudly showcases the Philippine #Flag during the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair. Husband drove us for 90 minutes (one way) so I can get the book gifted to me by a Filipina American novelist (Ninotchka Rosca) whose books were featured during the fair.

Written from the perspective of a van driver, this books tells the manifold stories of Sri Lanka‘s people: returning exiles, aid workers, entrepreneurs, tourists and many more. The novel beamed me right back to 2012 when I first visited. I could see the places in front of me, smell the smells and remember all the great conversations I had with people about the war, the tsunami, the Chinese and the future. What a perceptive and fantastic read.

#HaikuADay #HaikuHive

Today‘s haiku is inspired by a large banyan tree that fell into the road in Hilo this weekend. (Not the one pictured) Luckily, no one was injured but it makes me sad to see one of these revered trees fall. They are not native to Hawaii but they have become a part of the landscape & culture.

One of my bike tires went flat yesterday (while I was about an hour‘s bike-push from home; blah), so I had to hit Canadian Tire today—and hey, my favourite indie bookstore‘s in the same mall, and it would‘ve been rude not to stop in. I chose two books from the bargain section and a gorgeous new bookmark I shall use in my primary read.
